Newport News Public Schools Job Description Job Title: Network Intern Supervisor: Assigned Network Technician Position Code: Pay Grade: Job Classification: Internship Contract Length: 2009 – 2010 School Year Job Summary This position is responsible for assisting Network Technicians with the daily maintenance of the school division’s large-scale, complex local and wide, wired and wireless area computer network. The position carries out installat ion, testing, and technical tasks in support of the network operating system. Essential Duties 1. Assists with daily maintenance of the school division’s local and wide, wired and wireless area computer network. Installs and tests network servers, operating system so ftware, routers, switches, cabling, and other related network components/equip ment. 2. Assists in maintaining and repairing network operating systems, the network cabling infrastructure, and other related components. 3. Assists in performing diagnostics and preventative maintenance to ensure that network systems are operational. 4. Assists with network management activities to include, but not limited to, maintaining Domain Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name Server (DNS) services, disk space allocation, wireless access privileges, network performance monitoring systems, system logs, etc. 5. Assists in processing work orders directly assigned to the Network Services department. 6. Assists in maintaining records of work completed and in-progress; and assists in updating network documentation to record installations, upgrades, configurations, etc. 7. Travels to and from schools/work sites with Network Services personnel in the performance of duties. 8. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Other Duties 1. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of rapidly changing computer network technology. 2. Assists in performing other related duties as assigned by the Network Technician or other appropriate administrators. Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting Network Technicians with the daily maintenance of the school division’slarge-scale, complex local and wide, wired and wireless area computer network. The position carries out installation,

and have a minimum of one recommendation from a teacher familiar with your technical skills (e.g. Career and 

Technical Education, Math, etc.) and one recommendation from a school administrator or Magnet Director.

A general knowledge of computer network characteristics, network operating system software, and network 

components (i.e.: network servers, switches, hubs, routers, bridges, cabling, etc.) and experience in AutoCAD and 

Microsoft’s Visio is a plus. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Work Environment

centralized computer rooms, on-site locations and outside in the open environment. While performing the duties of

 precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level is usually moderate and 

occasionally loud when performing duties in centralized computer rooms.
