allows two people to communicate in over the Internet just as if they were having a face-to-face talk with the other person. It is much faster than email. Some Instant Messaging software allows you to track when another person "logs on" or "logs off" of the Internet. Some software also gives you the ability to send files to your friends, and receive files they send to you.
