• Problem: Access to global financial resources for entrepreneurs seeking loans to help develop rural economies in Kenya proves difficult and expensive.

• Service Provider Solution: Service providers offer a mobile Internet platform that connects previously unconnected rural Kenyans, bringing access to mobile banking and other global financial options.

• Result: People receive access to loans through the mobile Internet platform. As a result, Kenyans in rural communities are now empowered to create new business opportunities and ecosystems, with service provider mobile services as the conduit.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #2: Bridging Communication for the Hearing-Impaired

• Problem: People who are hearing-impaired in developing countries often lack formal opportunities for special education. This can severely limit their means of communication and economic future.

• Service Provider Solution: Provide the Internet connections and mobile network necessary within Colombia to bring access to video-based software designed to educate hearing-impaired people.

• Result: Quality of life is improved for hearing-impaired individuals and their families, with new opportunities to learn and overcome obstacles related to their disability.

• Problem: Limited access to healthcare leads to continued malaria outbreaks across the Democratic Republic of Congo.

• Service Provider Solution: Provide a mobile Internet platform that connects Congolese people to an information network, bringing access to health information about malaria prevention and outbreaks.

• Result: Citizens are being educated about malaria preparation and prevention, decreasing malaria outbreaks. The connections enabled by service providers are saving lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #4: Connecting Information to Boost Rural Farm Production

• Problem:  Rural subsistence farmers have limited access to vital agricultural information that can help them increase crop production and provide a better livelihood for their families.

• Service Provider Solution: Provide a mobile Internet platform that connects the rural Ugandan population, bringing access to SMS text messaging and mobile communication options. Over this network Ugandans now have access to vital agricultural information.

• Result: Farmers have access to real-time information about methods to improve crop production. These farmers can produce higher crop yields and are in an improved position to sustain their communities from hunger.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #5: Enabling Rural Farming Communities in Africa

• Problem: Rural farmers struggle to maintain their livelihoods because they do not have access to valuable information about farming practices and market needs

• Service Provider Solution: By providing mobile Internet capabilities, service providers are giving rural farmers tools to participate in a community where they can receive educational resources related to crop production and learn more about which markets have a demand for specific products.

• Result: Rural farmers have the ability to share best practices on pest control, irrigation, and crop rotation as well as gain access to open markets to sell produce. Through an interactive, virtual community, farmers can take advantage of new opportunities for population sustainability.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #6: Accessing Telemedicine in Mongolia

• Problem:  More than 57,000 births occur every year in Mongolia. Due to Mongolia’s low population density, access to medical experts often requires traveling great distances. This makes it difficult for pregnant mothers and newborns in remote areas to receive proper health care.

• Service Provider Solution: By offering and integrating Internet, video, and mobile connections to these remote areas, service providers enable remote doctors to participate in telemedicine. Doctors can communicate virtually with other doctors in more populated areas to receive advice on patient care.

• Result: Doctors in rural areas can share patient history, video, and diagnostics with medical specialists in real time. This expedites treatment by saving travel time for both the patient and the medical specialist. It also improves the likelihood of a correct diagnosis, resulting in higher-quality patient care.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #7: Connecting Blood Banks in India

• Problem:  There is inadequate inventory in blood banks across India, due to a lack of awareness and communication on blood supply needs.

• Service Provider Solution: By providing the ability for people to communicate through social media, service providers can enable solicitations for blood donations to be made online. Information about blood type needs can also be shared through social media platforms.

• Result: Service providers connect citizens through social networking communities such as Facebook and Twitter. Real-time blood supply needs and information about how to donate blood can be communicated to virtualized communities across India, thus improving India’s health preparedness.

Service Provider IoE Case Study #8: Accelerating Information Sharing in Natural Disasters

• Problem:  It is challenging to communicate real-time and relevant warnings about natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and hurricanes, globally.

• Service Provider Solution: Provide an Internet and mobile Internet platform that globally connects people to disaster warning communications in real-time.

• Result: Citizens can receive natural disaster alerts on computers or mobile devices through the Humanitarian Early Warning Service (HEWS). This service offers citizens lead time to evacuate dangerous locations and reach areas of safety before the natural disaster strikes. In-country emergency response teams can also mobilize communities and dispatch aid more quickly.

VNI Service Award SubmissionsSubmission Process:

• Each entry had to answer 5 questions related to the business problem, technology solution and impact

• Entrant segmented submissions by technology and societal impact

• A panel of 10 individuals (internal and external to Cisco) were randomly assigned stories

• Stories were assigned scores from 1 (low) – 5 (high) based on five criteria; creativity, resourcefulness, impact, leadership, long term success

• Cisco Connected Life Exchange Blogs

• Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) & Mobile Communications for Development (M4D)

• Included past success stories from PR ‘My Networked Life’ and Corporate Social Responsibility as sources of inspiration.
