Chonnam National UniversityFounded in 1952, CNU has remained committed to fostering global leaders and professionals as

one of Korea’s most innovative universities with a reputation for its research, teaching, and leading

in the local communities. Located in the Metropolitan City of Gwangju, CNU has 16 colleges and 11

graduate schools. With 2,200 academic staff members, it provides comprehensive education to

35,000 students including 1,800 international students form 75 different countries.

GwangjuWith a population of 1.5 million, Gwangju Metropolitan

City is the 5th largest city in South Korea. Gwangju has

never stopped playing a key role in the history of Korea’s

democracy and human rights movements. In particular,

the May 18 Democratic Movement, Gwangju’s uprising

against the military dictatorship in 1980’s, set an

example for many Asian countries. Gwangju is also

regarded as a city rich in culture and art, with exhibitions

and performances, making the city vibrant and colorful.

Gwangju is designated as an “International Safe Community”by World Health Organization(WHO).

CNUISS 2018 was a very enriching experience for both students and lecturers. The possibility of meeting in one place so many people of such different background, from different continents, representing different cultures,

was priceless. In addition, Korea is a beautiful and intriguing country, and the tours held every Wednesday and Saturday allowed for a better understanding of the charms and culture of this surprising country. I can honestly admit

that the month spent in Gwangju, although very intense, was one of the most pleasant in my professional life.

CNU Buddy ProgramThe buddy program is designed to ensure that every student feels comfortable in

her or his new surroundings. With their CNU Buddies, students can make lifelong

friendships, learn about student life in Korea, and safely venture around the country.

Ever since returning back to the University of Missouri, I have been encouraging many people to

study abroad with CNUISS because I truly believe it is worth it. From the courses and cultural trips, to

the Korean buddy system and the campus, I was able to build so many memorable friendships and find

a home at CNU. In the classroom, I was able to participate in discussions with students from across the

world who all had diverse personal experiences. On the extremely organized and well-planned cultural trips, we received

opportunities to explore multiple landmark locations in and around Gwangju. The Korean buddy system made it easy for me

to explore exciting areas surrounding campus and the city. The campus itself became a playground of discovery. I am

someone who likes to say the best is yet to come, but I sincerely and wholeheartedly believe I had the best times of my life

at Chonnam National University.

Studying at a different university in a different country really sounds challenging. But at Chonnam

National University, I never felt the fear of being left out just because I am new to the campus. All I felt

was happiness and fulfillment. Aside from learning new things through academics, you also get to discover

a lot about other cultures such as their education, traditions, costumes, everything! Here, you will also enjoy the tours at the

best locations. I am very proud to say that given a short span of time, I gained a newfound family. Being a CNUISS 2018

participant is really a life-changing journey because here, you will always feel that you belong.

As I stepped off the bus at Chonnam National University, I was warmly greeted by a group of Korean

buddies, I did not know one person in the International Summer Session program, but that changed

quickly.By the end of the program, I knew so many individuals from around the world. Their kindness,

hospitality and the time and effort they devote to this program make it so outstanding.Learning from so

many individuals from different countries, backgrounds, practices and languages broadened my perspective. I came to

realize that we all have many differences, but we have much more in common. The CNUISS offers a unique experience

connecting me with 200 participants from 21 countries. The best part of the program was learning from my Korean friends,

and the students and professors from all over the world. I also enjoyed the class I took there, because I learned different

perspectives on cultures and languages across the globe.Gwangju will always have a special place in my heart.

Although I would like to count myself as a well-traveled scholar and professor, I have never experi-

enced such attention to detail and human care as I received by the brilliant staff, administration, and

the very students I taught and learned from in the CNUISS program. I will cherish my experiences there

for the rest of my life.I was very happy to partake in this well-established program during the summer of

2018 as a music instructor to a small class of very gifted students. During this program, students from a myriad of places were
