Dear Student,

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the University of Leicester and to ourInternational Students’ Welfare Programme, which has been designed especially for you.

The University of Leicester is a leading international university which is involved in thepursuit of excellence in both teaching and research and holds strong positions in leaguetables nationally and worldwide. A degree from this University will therefore be a majorachievement which will certainly help to promote your future career.

Our Welcome Programme aims to provide an introduction to both studying and living inLeicester. You will be shown around the University campus and given a guided tour ofthe City of Leicester. The International Students’ Services Fair will provide informationabout the excellent student support services that are available to you during your studieswith us. There will be many opportunities for you to ask questions plus a programme ofsocial activities and free time when we hope you will meet new friends.

The beginning of term is an extremely hectic time. We hope this gentle introductionbefore the start of the academic year will provide time for you to acclimatise, to get usedto the British way of life, to answer those pressing questions and generally to settle in.

INFORMATION DURING THEISWP

Where can I ask questions about theISWP?During ISWP, there will be an Information Desk in theentrance hall of the Percy Gee Building (Students’ Union)from Monday 26th September to Friday 30th Septemberbetween 09.00 and 16.00. Use this information desk tocollect your Discover Leicester Bus Tour ticket, ask questionsand book a police registration appointment if necessary.

Which sessions can I attend andshould I reserve a place?Some of the sessions are marked Important as theycontain essential information. These are held in large lecturetheatres. Other events are optional and you can come to asmany or few sessions or events as you like. There are avariety of workshops and events which run at the same time,and have a limited number of spaces due to the room sizes.In order to minimise disappointment we advise you to get tothe room early. You can use the table on page 4 of thisschedule to plan your optional sessions. We do not ask youto pre-book for any of the events. However, you will need tosign up at the Information Desk for the Discover Leicester bustours and walking tours.

Who are Student Assistants and howcan they help?Our Student Assistants are the friendly and helpful peoplewearing blue t-shirts with a University of Leicester logo. They areexperienced and knowledgeable students who want to help youto settle in and answer your questions.

Where can I access the Internet duringISWP?If you are in University Accommodation, then you will be able toaccess the internet in your room. You can also access the internetfrom the Library’s ground floor IT Room 1 from 12:00-16:00 fromMonday-Friday during ISWP. It is always a good idea to contactyour family and inform them of your safe arrival.

SAFETY

Am I safe in Leicester?

Leicester is a safe place to live, but as in all cities you need to beaware of your own safety and security. There is an importantsafety talk during the ISWP facilitated by the campus policeofficer and there will be more safety information available at theServices Fair on Wednesday afternoon. In your Welcome Packs,you will find an interesting and thorough booklet called‘Creating Confidence’ aimed at international students which hashelpful information about keeping yourself safe while you arestudying in the UK.

you can find out more information and sports cards can bepurchased from the Charles Wilson Sports Hall office.

There will be an opportunity for you to try some of the sportson offer at the University at the Sports Afternoon held onThursday of ISWP between 13:00 - 16:00. University sportsteams will also be present at the Societies Fair held on Friday ofISWP between 13:00 -16:00 to give you more information anda chance to sign up.

TRANSPORT

How do I travel around Leicester?

Buses during the ISWP

The 80a bus will run from the bus stops at Oadby StudentVillage to main campus at the following times:

Departing each morning from Oadby (Manor Road) at:07:45 08:15 08:45 09:15 09:45

Departing each afternoon from main campus (University Road) at:16:15 16:45 17:15 17:45 18:15

From Monday – Saturday during term-time the number 80 bustakes students from Oadby Student Village to main campus andthe city centre. This is the cheapest method of public transportfor students. A single ticket costs £2.10; a day ticket is £3.60and the driver will give you change if you do not have the exactcash. A weekly pass costs £15.00. You can buy an Arriva CityPlus Student Ticket from the Students’ Union for £320 for theacademic year. This gives you unlimited travel within Leicesteron any Arriva bus.

The number 31 or 31A bus can take students from OadbyStudent Village to main campus and the city centre. At Oadby,you need to get onto the bus from the bus stop near the racecourse on London Road (a short walk from youraccommodation). To get to the main campus, you need to getoff the bus at the junction of London Road and University Roadand walk down University Road.

(The University is not responsible for the bus timetable above asthe company can sometimes change the operational times withlittle warning.)

HEALTH

How do I register with a doctor?

Information will be provided at the talk on Wednesday 28thSeptember about health care in this country.

It is important to register with a doctor and you can do this onThursday 29th September from 10.45am-4.00pm in the KenEdwards building, rooms 323, 324 and 325. Registration isfree and you will also be offered a free health check.

FOOD AND DRINK

There are a number of catering outlets on campus – see thecatering leaflet in your Welcome Pack for details.

For students in catered accommodation (in Oadby) dinner willbe served on Monday at 18.30 at Digby Hall and at 17.30 atStamford dining hall every other night during the ISWP exceptfor Friday when it will be served at the earlier time of17.00 so that you will have time to prepare for the Mayor’sWelcome to Leicester.

Where can I shop for groceries and otheressentials?

The University main campus is located near Morrisonssupermarket. It is about 10 minutes to walk from both the NixonCourt and Freemen’s Common accommodation sites, andapproximately 15 minutes from Opal Court and Regent/Salisburyaccommodation sites.

For students living at The Grange there are two Tesco expressstores located in the city centre as well as Sainsbury’s.

Oadby Student Village Halls are located close to Asdasupermarket. For students who live in City Livingaccommodations sites, there is a free Asda Bus service which runsduring term time. Keep a look out for the Asda Bus posters inyour accommodation giving information about the day of theweek on which this service operates.

During the first two days of ISWP (see Monday schedule andpages 5 & 6), Student Assistants will help guide you to Morrisons,Asda and the Chinese Supermarket so that you can buy essentialitems. Leicester also has one of the biggest open-air markets inthe UK located within the city centre. You will find an open-airfruit and vegetable market and a closed market selling meat, fishand cheese.

SPORT

What sports facilities does Leicester offer?

The university has a wide range of sports teams and clubs as wellas excellent facilities. To take part in sporting activities after ISWPyou will need to purchase a Sports Card. Sports Cards cost £75for the whole academic year and give you full access to all sportsfacilities. There will be a sports stand at the services fair where

The Safety Bus will be available for safe travel home at night ifyou need to leave outside of the advertised bus times. You willfind the Safety Bus parked on the marked bay at the side of theCharles Wilson Building and the bus will leave when full andreturn back to campus.

You may wish to buy a Safety Bus card from ‘The Point’ in theStudent’s Union as the Safety Bus service also operates duringterm time. Prices are £39 for a term and £79 for a year.

Taxis: Local taxi firms include Victoria Cabs: 0116 270 6655 ABCTaxis: 0116 2555 111 and Queens Cabs: 0116 2701 700. Don’tforget to use a taxi or the Students’ Union run Safety Bus duringthe evenings if you need to get home by yourself.

Cycling: You can also cycle in Leicester, but remember that youcycle on the left side of the road in the UK.

If you do decide to have a bike in Leicester you can take it tothe Security Lodge on campus to be registered. From there youcan also buy a secure D-lock for your bike at the discountedprice of £10.

LEICESTER

How can I find out more about the city ofLeicester?

Maps of the city are available from the Information Desk. Formore information about the city and the surrounding area, cometo the ‘Find out more about Leicestershire’ talk on Wednesday,go on a ‘Discover Leicester Bus Tour’ or visit the TouristInformation Office located at Town Hall Square in the city centre.

Walking Tours: Leicester Civic Society will be running walkingtours throughout ISWP, to show you some of Leicester’s bestknown and interesting historical sites. Spaces are limited to 30per tour so please make sure you sign up at the InformationDesk. You must be at the meeting point for the start of thewalking tours at 13:30 or the bus will leave without you andplease be aware that transport will only be provided to the startof each tour, meaning you must make your own way back from

the city centre. Each tour will last approximately two hours andbear in mind you will be walking the whole time. For moreinformation about the walking tours pick up a flyer from theInformation Desk.

Please note that you can only book for one walking tourduring the ISWP.

RELIGIOUS PROVISION

Where can I practice my religion during ISWP?

The Chaplaincy (Gatehouse) will be open daily from 10am-4pm,for free tea, coffee, and the chance to meet the University’sChaplains and have a chat. There is a wide range of informationavailable for each major faith at the Gatehouse and the Chapel willbe open daily.

Catholic Mass will be held on Wednesday and Friday at 12:30 pmin the Gatehouse.

In the Charles Wilson Building on the mezzanine floor, there is aprayer room for female Muslim students which is open andavailable daily. The male prayer room will be in room 802 in theCharles Wilson Building until 30th September, after which it willmove back to the mezzanine floor.

Leicester Council of Faiths will be at the Services Fair onWednesday with further information about where to practice yourfaith in the city for each major religion.

IMMIGRATION

My visa sticker says that I need to register withthe Police – what do I do?

The University has organised police registration on campus forthose who need to do this. You will need to sign up at theInformation Desk where you will be given a time and place toattend. To book an appointment for changing your details with thepolice or registering for the first time, please visit the InformationDesk where a Student Assistant will help you. Police Registrationwill take place on campus in October. The police have made specialarrangements with the University for this and understand that thismay be more than 7 days since your arrival so please do not visitthe police station yourself or you may be sent away. You can findout more about the Police Registration and the documents you willneed at the Student’s Guide to Immigration session on Wednesday.

Discover Leicester Bus Tour

Take a panoramic bus tour of Leicester. A guide onboard the bus will tell you about the city’s history andplaces of interest, such as the Golden Mile, National Space Centre and Abbey Park. There are 95 placesper tour so please ensure that you board the correct bus at the time stated on your ticket. Tickets are available at the Information Desk in the Queen’s Hall Building Entrance Hall.

Non – EU International students must complete their registration at the University. You will have received anappointment time when you registered for the ISWP at the Information Desk. You must already havesuccessfully completed online registration. You must attend your appointment – it is compulsory. If youare unable to attend, you must attend Monday to Wednesday of the first week of term.

Please bring your passport and visa/biometric ID card, or if you don’t have these documents because yourvisa application is currently being processed, a photocopy of these documents. Please also bring apassport sized photo with you.

Discover Leicester Tour

Venue: Meet at University Bus Stop (side of Charles Wilson Building)

You will need your ticket to get on the bus. Take a panoramic tour of Leicester. A guide onboard thebus will tell you about the city’s history and places of interest, such as the Golden Mile, National SpaceCentre and Abbey Park. There are 95 places per tour so please ensure that you board the correct busat the time stated on your ticket. Tickets are available at the Information Desk in the Queen’s HallBuilding Entrance Hall.

A highlight of the ISWP week, we invite you to join new friends for an evening of entertainment. Therewill be musical and dramatic performances by fellow students. You are welcome to show off yourcountry and your culture with a dance, a poetry reading, a song or a dramatic performance – ifyou are interested please let Student Assistants know on the night.

Following this, ‘The Big Shabang’ will take place in O2 Academy 1, with those attending the CulturalNight gaining free entry.

Trip to Warwick Castle

Tickets will be sold from Wednesday 28th September to Friday 30thSeptember 9am-4pm at ‘The Point’ (Students Union Box Office) Numbers arelimited to 300 places. www.warwick-castle.co.uk

Cost £20 per person (transport and castle admission included)

Warwick Castle is less than a one hour drive from the University, and there is a lot to seeand do within the historic grounds. The castle dates back to William the Conqueror’sreign, built in 1068 the building has had many varied uses during its long history. Todaythe castle is owned by a waxwork group called Tussard’s who are famous for producinginteractive exhibitions. Whilst at the castle you can explore the Haunted Towers, CastleDungeons and Maiden’s Tower. There are many food outlets, where you can buy food,or you can bring a picnic lunch to eat in the grounds.

Coaches will leave:

• Outside Beaumont Hall, Stoughton Drive South at 08:45 (for students staying atOadby Student Village)

• Main University campus bus stop (opposite Charles Wilson Building) at 09:15 (forstudents staying at City Living sites)

We will leave Warwick Castle at 17:00, arriving back on campus at approximately 18:00.

Any person who misses the coach departures will be responsible for makingTHEIR OWN way there and/or back.
