There are many advantages for overseas students to consider in taking an extra year of A-level study before university. This year can be usefully spent improving their examination grades to the required level, taking additional A-levels to improve admission opportunities, acclimatising to the British culture and language and developing the independent learning and living skills to confidently enter the university system.

This is especially the case for international students who have already completed their International Baccalaureate or A-levels in their own country. Howell’s school offers a pre-university study programme for students (girls only) in a safe and secure learning environment that will help them to improve their university opportunities.

Course A2PU/T Commences September. This is a course of intensive study in one to three subjects for students who wish to complete the two year AS and A2 examinations in a single year. To achieve three subjects in one year is extremely demanding and suitable only for students who have an excellent command of the English language. To achieve two subjects in one year is less demanding but nevertheless requires focus and commitment as classes in the lecture theatre may continue to 7pm. There is full integration with existing students taking AS/A2 courses, and accelerated English lessons are provided where necessary. Students may choose from one to three subjects to study – Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Law or Psychology. A maximum of 20 students are admitted to the course to ensure individual attention.

Course ASPU/6Commences January. This is a six month course of pre-university study with opportunities to take AS examinations, or repeat A2 examinations to improve grades and increase university entrance opportunities. Subject choices are the same as for course A2PU/T. There is full integration with existing students taking AS/A2 courses and accelerated English lessons are provided where necessary. A maximum of 10 students are admitted to the course to ensure individual attention.

Students may use their free time for other educational opportunities, improving their command of the English language, or recreationally in pursuit of equestrian, sporting or musical opportunities. Upon completion of these pre-university courses, girls will have adapted educationally and socially to the British boarding school system. As Howell’s is an all-girls school, they will learn to be confident and relaxed in living and studying away from home.

The school has an extensive enrichment programme including clubs, after school sports and social activities. Students can sign up to weekend excursions for shopping trips, city visits and cultural experiences.
