Announcements and Reminders The 2015-2016 ISMP team at the summer mentor retreat at the Oregon coast Apply to be an International Student Mentor! Once again we are seeking student mentors to join our 2017-2018 International Student Mentor Program (ISMP). Mentors serve as a support for new international students, a resource to introduce them to PSU services, and a cultural bridge to ease students into their lives at PSU. Applications are due May 1st. Travel Information - Know Before you Go! As travel information becomes available, we'd like to share tips with you to help you prepare for a domestic or international flight. MAX Light Rail and Streetcar Disruption, April 30 - May 20 MAX tracks on SW Yamhill and Morrison are being repaired, and therefore there will be major disruptions to regular MAX service downtown on the Red, Blue, and Green lines, as well as the Streetcar to downtown. You can find more information and sign up for email service updates at their website . Feature of the Week This week we'd like to share an awesome video made by international student Jannis Bausch. Jannis participated in the 4T Hike activity planned by the International Student Life team last Friday, April 21st. Here he shows a fun recap of the day so we can experience it too! Thanks for the awesome video, Jannis! Looks like a fun time! International Student Life Events Upcoming Events Interfaith Panel and Discussion Wednesday, April 26th, 4-6pm, SMSU 026 - Today! Are you curious about world religions? Join us for an interesting student panel and small-group discussion where students who represent different worldviews, spiritualities, and religions will explain one aspect of their beliefs that is commonly misunderstood. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their perspectives. Dinner will be provided. Contact Dianna with any questions at [email protected]. Portland Thorns (Women's Soccer) Game Saturday, May 6th, 5:30pm, Campus Rec 236 Join Campus Rec, IELP, and the International Student Mentors Mahamadou and Sophia to watch the Portland's professional women's soccer team, the Thorns, match up against the Seattle Reign at Providence Park! A free pizza party will be offered at 5:30pm at Campus Rec 236, and then we'll walk over to the stadium together for the game which starts at 7pm. Tickets are $15/each, and you can purchase them at this link . International Night 2017 "Let the eARTh speak" Friday, May 19th, 4-9pm, SMSU Building International Night is an annual event held by the Organization of International Students at PSU. This year, the theme is "Let the eARTh speak." As a tradition, the event will take place in SMSU throughout the first three floors. On the 1st floor, we will serve cuisines from different countries to satisfy your tastebuds. On the 2nd floor, we will have country booths to meet your curiosity. On the 3rd floor, we will have wonderful performances. Don't miss this awesome opportunity to experience diverse cultures in one night! Save the date on your calendar! Tickets are now available online as well as in person at the PSU box office. General public advance tickets cost $5; at the door will be $10. Free for PSU students, staff, and faculty. Regular Weekly Events Intercultural Coffee Hour Wednesdays, 4-5:30pm, SMSU 101 All students are welcome to join us for free coffee and snacks and time to socialize with other students. This event is in collaboration with the Intensive English Language Program and the Organization of International Students. Other Events All Majors Career and Internship Fair Thursday, May 4th, 11am-3pm, SMSU Ballroom The last career fair of the school year is approaching! This is a great opportunity to network with over 80 employers and find summer employment before school ends. For tips on how to prepare, check out this career fair success guide , or attend a career workshop to help you get started. Sanskriti '17 Friday, May 5th, 5:30-10pm, SMSU Ballroom Presenting Indian Student Association's signature event of the academic year - Sanskriti '17! On May 5th, witness enthusiastic performances showcasing Indian culture, taste what Indian cuisine has to offer, and dance to the beats of DJ Anshul! So mark your calendars and join us on May 5th at 5:30pm in the SMSU Ballroom at PSU. Tickets for PSU students are free and are available at this link . PSU Bike Challenge May 1 - May 31st The PSU Bike Challenge is a month-long event designed to encourage both new and experienced riders to bike in Portland during the month of May. Students and staff compete on teams to win prizes based on number of trips, number of new riders, and other select criteria. You can find more information here. FOCUS Friday Night Friday, April 28th, 7:00-10pm, First Baptist Church (909 SW 11th Ave) on Taylor between 11th and 12th Aves How To Love Work Work - for some it is a horrible thing, for others, it is something to look forward to after all this studying. Whether you are currently working or wil be in an internship or after graduation soon, we all will work in some way. FOCUS invites you to share values, difficulties, and joys of working. International Student Workshops CPT/OPT Workshops Thursday, May 4th, 2pm-3:30pm Wednesday, May 24th, 1:30pm-3pm Do you have questions about CPT, OPT, or STEM Extension? Come get your questions answered by an international student advisor. The first 20 minutes will be focused on CPT, the next 30-40 minutes on OPT, and the final 30 minutes on the STEM Extension. Come for the parts that interest you. All workshops take place in East Hall 109. We will have ICSP members and coordinators available to share about the program and answer your questions. Additionally, we will answer questions about the International Student Retention Scholarship. Jobs and Opportunities Become an International Student Mentor We are currently seeking students to join our International Student Mentoring Program (ISMP) for 2017-2018. Mentors receive training throughout the summer and work to support new international students prearrival, at orientation, and throughout the fall term. The application deadline is May 1, 2017. Students from all academic levels, departments, knowledge levels, and countries are encouraged to apply! Student Leaders for Service is Hiring! Student Leaders for Service is a year-long program that pairs students with a local non-profit in order to plan events and service opportunities to get PSU students, faculty, and staff more involved in the community. Current student leaders have planned events such as donation drives, garden parties, wine auctions, and more! The committment is 6-10 hours per week, and each member earns a $1,200 stipend and is offered optional course credit. Check out the website for more information. Apply by May 3rd. International Special Programs is Recruiting! International Special Programs is looking for students to work part-time during the summer, supporting their students, leading trips, and helping instructors and program coordinators with other tasks as assigned. Students with Japanese and Chinese language skills are encouraged to apply, though this is not a requirement. To learn more about the program and the expectations, please read the Position Description . Applications are due on Sunday, May 7th. You can access the online application form here . The deadline for the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) is May 15th at 5pm. In addition to giving presentations about their cultures, ICSP members also participate in professional skill development and public speaking training. This is an excellent way to earn financial support for your education, grow your professional skills and networks, and also teach others about your unique culture! For more information about the program, including eligibility criteria and application instructions, please visit the ICSP website . The amount of the ICSP award is $3,250 tuition remission each term. ICSP/ISRS information sessions will be held on Thursday, April 27th from 3-4pm in East Hall 121 and Monday, May 1st from 1-2pm in East Hall 122. Please stop by and get your questions answered! International Night is seeking Performers, Volunteers, and People to Host Country Booths! Do you like to perform? We would love to see you on stage at International Night on Friday, May 19th! Performance opportunities are open to the community. Please complete this form if you are interested in performing! Want to help out by volunteering at International Night? We are also seeking people to represent countries from around the world by hosting a Country Booth! The Country Booths are tables that are arranged with a variety of artifacts from countries around the world so that participants can walk from table to table and see an interesting display or artifact from many different countries.
