This stock is directly related tothe many patents of Gianni Bettini.Bettini a wealthy Italian inventor,founded the Société des Micro-Phonographes after returning fromthe United States, where he hadrecorded the music of favorite artists.In 1888, Bettini had become interest-ed in Edison’s phonograph, which atthat time was only meant to recordand play back the spoken word.Because he loved music, he wantedto record songs, but the sound quali-ty of the phonograph did not satisfyhim. Bettini improved the recordingneedle and fashioned a horizontalarrangement of the sound cans. Hiscylinders cost two to six dollars, asopposed to those that sold for 50cents. His music cylinders could beused on American phonographs andBettini set up a studio in New York torecord music. However, because ofU.S. competition (Edison andColumbia), he returned to Europe.There, he also produced recordings ofthe speech of famous people likePope Leo XIII, who died a fewmonths afterwards. Bettini laterinvented a lighter, improved theacetylene lamp, developed an auto-matic ball-throwing device for tennisplayers and developed a cinematog-raphy system with moving glasspanes. Extraordinary vignetted certificate with an ornate bor-der design encircling the printed names of some of the world’s greatestcomposers, writers and thinkers including Shakespeare, Beethoven,Mozart, Gallileo, etc. A nice vignette of the concert hall is flanked bywinged allegorical figures at the top. This is truly an exceptionally finelithographed stock from the 1830’s.

Paganini began visiting Paris in 1831. Already well-known for his com-positions his fame preceded him. He chose the city as his residencefrom 1832 - 1833 and returned twice again, in 1834 and 1837. Duringhis final visit to Paris, he met with investors who proposed to build aconcert hall named in his honor on the Chaussee d’Antin. He invested100,000 francs of his personal funds in the venture, only to lose thetotal amount in a lengthy legal battle. Paganini’s artistic abilities dete-riorated rapidly following this episode.

An exceptionally graphic and decorative certificate from this early peri-od. Extremely rare certificate to date with only three examples known.Some foxing throughout. Uncancelled and fine.
