Having entered many shows, I know the emotional investment that each entry represents. We are elated when our painting is accepted, crestfallen when it is not! I want to commend everyone who took a risk and entered the show. Do not be discouraged if your painting did not make it into this year’s show. Every exhibit should be a wonderful learning experience, as an exhibitor and/or as a viewer. To that end, if you would like to learn more about my evaluation of your painting, I am happy to share my thoughts with you. Art is one of those wonderful activities in life where growing and learning has no limits. Jurying a show is always subjective, but I strive to eliminate as much personal bias as possible. ere were four categories of criteria considered, with 1 to 5 possible points for each one. Content (story or emotional impact), Composition (design), Originality and Technique were what I was evaluating. Every artist has a different hierarchy of how they would rank the importance of these different aspects of painting. I personally feel originality is more important than technique, but that is a personal bias. For this show, all four categories had equal weight. I added up the points and entries with 15 or better were accepted. Congratulations to those artists and to those who received awards. For me, the true value of art is in the activity itself. e sheer joy of sloshing paint or making marks, exploring color, expressing ideas, discovering surprises and getting lost for hours in a magical world is far more important than the final result. Enjoy the process, love your time cre- ating, strive to always learn more and you will always be the winner!
