Seminars 2-5 will focus on the critical analysis of key articles on the theories covered onthe day. Groups of 4-5 (assigned before the start of teaching) will be responsible forreading and critically analysing articles.

 

This type of analysis will be demonstrated during the first session and should aim toanswer these questions:

 

1. What are the main concepts discussed or employed in the article?

 

2. What is the article's main argument? -arguments may be about how internationalrelation 'works' or about how we should study or approach international relations.

 

3. What are the article's sources and methodology?

4. What are the article's main strengths and weaknesses?

 

Students should give a brief presentation (5 minutes) of their analysis and provide DrDingli with a single page of their findings which will be uploaded to Moodle at the end ofthe session. Dr Dingli will provide students with feedback on their presentations,arguments and written presentation of findings.

 

Seminars 8 and 9 will take the form of debates. Further information on these will beprovided in class. Each student will take part in one debate and will have an opportunity toassess another. 

How to Use Reading List (20 items)

Reading for the class is listed under weekly topics below. You are expected to read all ofthe seminar readings in advance of every seminar so that you can contribute to thediscussion. Seminar readings are taken from journal articles and/or from books. Thejournals articles are available online.

 

Don't limit yourselves to the reading list. If you have difficulty getting hold of any of theitems listed, you are expected to use your initiative and look for other appropriate materialor to contact the lecturer. You are also encouraged to make use of the internet andnewspapers to gain relevant information and keep up with current affairs. 

Finally, there are several security and international relations journals available in thelibrary. You are strongly advised to look for relevant articles in them. Particularly usefuljournals include the titles listed below, however you may also access back issues ofseveral other journals via JSTOR (www.jstor.org):
