Overly high water levels in the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay and St. Lawrence Seaway in Ontario and Quebec continue to plague yacht clubs and marinas resulting in delayed launches, reduced facilities and submerged docks. Port Credit Yacht Club has been fortunate as their harbour utilizes floating docks, and the main dock is well above normal water levels.

With just weeks to go before the 2017 World Championship at Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga, Ontario Canada, the sponsors have started to join the bandwagon. At least 10 countries will be racing!

A highlight of the week will be the Battle of the Nations Ball Hockey tournament…so get your teams organized and ready to go!

IJCA Technical ReportBy Tim Winger, International Technical Committee Chair, [email protected]

CARE AND FEEDING OF J/24 CHAINPLATESChainplates will be the subject of some Rules changes being

proposed this year. The Class Rules list them as Mandatory Fittings,

components of the Assembled Hull, and nothing more. As such, they

should be left in the condition as installed by the licensed builders,

which should conform to the designer’s plans and specifications.

There are two concerns with this.

First concern: the boats were built in a hurry in the early years,

and were not always to the designer’s plans and specifications,

especially regarding the chainplates and other fittings being

symmetrical about the boat’s centreplane. Curt Barnes, IJCA

Technical Committee member, has suggested that we be allowed

to move one chainplate to make them symmetrical about the

centreplane. This suggestion seems to make good sense, and will be

proposed for a Rule change at this year’s World Council Meeting.

In fact, it should to make the boat more one-design.

Second concern: the shroud chainplates are attached to the top of

the main bulkhead with five quarter inch (most of them were made

in the US, 6 mm elsewhere) bolts. The bulkhead is about 19 mm

thick. That gives an overall bearing of 570 square mm for the intense

loads that are being transferred from the rig to the hull. This works

fine when everything is in good shape. Over half of the bulkhead is

made up of plywood that is exposed to any water that might leak

through the deck around the chainplates. We find a lot of rot in this

area when this joint is not meticulously maintained. That can serious-

ly jeopardize the structure that is handling these intense loads.

Many boat owners have responded by using oversized backing

plates glued to the forward side of the bulkhead to help spread

this load. The plan is to propose a Rule change that would legalize

this practice with a limit of 40,000 square mm on the backer plates

(about 64 square inches for the Americans). Additionally, the

IJCA Technical Report

proposal would allow up to an additional five bolts. If anyone has

suggestions or concerns about this, please contact me soon.

This was brought to our attention by the Seattle Fleet and Mike

Johnson, IJCA Technical Committee member.

A little more on the leakage around the chainplates and how to stop

it: At the Worlds in Japan, one boat was rejected in measurement

until its entire plywood main bulkhead was replaced. All this

plywood was rotted from leakage around the chainplates. But it only

takes a small amount of rot in this area to compromise the structure.

Check your boat by inserting a pointed instrument into the area

above and around the chainplates. Softness and darkening in this

area would indicate rot. To repair the rot, remove the chainplate and

cut out all the rotten plywood and replace it with an insert of new

marine plywood. Fill any gaps between the old and new plywood

with epoxy filler and cover the joint with fiberglass. Reinstall any

fiberglass tabbing to the deck that you have disturbed. Before you

reinstall the chainplate, check the deck around the chainplate and

replace any rotten core with epoxy or polyester filler. Fill the screw

holes for the cover plates and do not replace the cover plate screws.

Reinstall the chainplates and pack any open space around them with

filler. Surround the chainplate with sealant or bedding compound

and press the cover plate into place. When all is set, cut away the

sealant that has oozed out around the plate when you pressed it

into place. The sealant should be checked and replaced every couple

of years to make sure it does not dry out and start to leak again.

Sail fast, sail safe.

Wakayama Sailing Club hosted the 2017 J/24 Kansai District Regatta in July with 11 boats. Team Siesta made a J/24 fleet in Wakayama with seven boats from the 2016 World Championship. Wakayama SC has become the most enthusiastic J/24 racing site in Japan. The 11 boats are driven by people as young as 12-years-old to experienced J/24 teams. Fortunately, it was mild weather, with all sailors enjoying a hot summer weekend. Team Siesta won the regatta, finishing first three times out of six. The Japan JCA is trying to promote younger teams to start J/24 racing.

The US J/24 Class Association has awarded the first-annual Kelly Holmes-Moon J/24 Scholarship Boat to students from the University of South Florida Sailing Team. The eager crew members— Brendan Feeney (helm), Sean Cornell (tactician), Mikey Treblecock (primary trimmer/alternate skipper), Scott Ewing (primary trimmer), Orrin Starr (secondary trimmer/pit), Andrew “Ty” Baird (bow) and Alex Smith (bow)—will be campaigning the boat in 2017 through early 2018. The program is named in honor of Kelly Holmes-Moon, a long-time supporter of the J/24 Class Association who served as US Class President and as the Copyright Holder’s Representative.

This summer, the Scholarship Boat Program members will be racing at Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, where they plan to participate in club and fleet events. During the school months, the boat will be located at St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, FL. They will consistently train during the week, as SPYC is only a few minutes from their USF campus, and they will practice during the Club’s Friday Night Series and local regatta circuit.

The Kelly Holmes-Moon J/24 Boat Grant Program encourages talented young sailors to gain first-hand experience racing within the J/24 Class of one-design sailboats at virtually no cost. Dave Eggleton donated the first boat, USA 423, to the program, providing the Scholarship Boat recipients with the experience to escalate their level of competitiveness and inspire them to accomplish great things in the sailing world. The team is in need of contributions to help fund their campaign. To find out how you can help, e-mail [email protected].

The application process for the 2018/2019 Kelly Holmes-Moon J/24 Boat Grant Program will begin in February 2018.

2017 SCHOLARSHIP BOAT MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES

Brendan Feeney, from Jacksonville, FL, is a junior majoring in Finance. He is a starting member of the University of South Florida nationally ranked Coed Sailing Team and a member of the school’s #1 nationally ranked offshore team. Feeney had the honor of representing Team USA last year at the 2016 Western Hemisphere and Orient Championships in Cabo Frio, Brazil. He recently began training in the 470 Olympic Class, placing second at the 2016 470 Nationals, as well as finishing as the third US team at the 2017 ISAF World Sailing Miami (US Sailing Team Sperry Selection Trials).

Sean Cornell, from Centerport, NY, is a sophomore at USF and a member of the Coed Sailing Team. He began sailing Optimists at age seven and also has competitive youth sailing experience in 420s. Cornell later transitioned beyond dinghy sailing into numerous Classes and boats, focusing specifically on small keelboat fleet and match racing. He has experience at the helm, but also excels as tactician. Cornell was elected as an underclassman captain during his freshman year, and this year stepped into a role as the team’s A-Skipper. His college sailing goals include: the All-American award and a Match Racing National Championship.

Mikey Treblecock, from Cleveland, OH, is a senior and co-captain on the USF dinghy and offshore sailing teams. He developed the offshore sailing team in the fall of 2015, which has grown to compete in every collegiate offshore regatta throughout the year. The USF Offshore Team completed the 2016 season by winning the Kennedy Cup, awarded annually to the collegiate keelboat national champions. Treblecock is predominantly at the helm for the college offshore events, however most of his sailing experience has involved crew positions.

Scott Ewing, from Miami, FL, is a member of the USF Sailing team in St. Petersburg, FL. As an engineering major, he regularly finds himself on the USF Tampa Campus. He grew up sailing Optimists out of Coral Reef Yacht Club, one of the top youth teams in the country. After a successful youth career, he transitioned into the Skiff Class. Here he found himself as one of the top 49er sailors in the world, representing the US on a number of occasions. Ewing is a 49er National Champion and North American Champion. This summer, he will be representing Oracle’s Team USA Youth Program at the 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

Orrin Starr, from Block Island, RI, is a sophomore at USF. He sails dinghies most of the time with USF, and has also been a significant part of developing the school’s offshore team into being the current #1 ranked offshore team in the country. Starr has become heavily involved in the J/70 Class, regularly competing as a trimmer on the circuit, including a Worlds campaign as shore crew.

Andrew “Ty” Baird, from St. Petersburg, FL, has been a life-long sailor, involved in the sport on many different levels. Baird has competed in anything from an Optimist to a 49er and many other boats like the Melges 32 or the Navy 44. He looks forward to getting more involved with keelboats.

Alex Smith, from Sayville, NY, started sailing at the age of six pulling in the backstays and barber haulers for his father. He began sailing 420s, Vanguard 15s and Lasers on Long Island’s junior sailing circuit, and soon began running the pit on a Melges 24 when he was 17. Smith has continued to grow in the successful Melges 24 program as the spinnaker trimmer for the previous two seasons. In college, he has been a four-year member of the varsity team competing at venues throughout the eastern seaboard. Smith served as a student-athlete mentor and a two-year co-captain of the team.

As always, the first semester of the year is our busiest and best part of the year to enjoy our sport in Mexico. We began in January with the Copa la Pena followed by the Triple Copa Scappino which is always a great event. It is the triple cup because it also includes golf and horseback riding. Scappino is a prestigious clothing company in our country, and they give all participants very nice and classy polo shirts and caps. Not to mention some really nice trophies and as always, great dinner and fun.

This year, we had the Copa Picacho Izar, also a great regatta where we have the traditional paella and dance contest, which is a lot of fun and is even more competitive than the regatta! It goes on until late hours with everyone leaving waiting already for next year’s event.

March and April are our best winds. We hosted Copa el Zarco and Copa Sauter, DR. Sauter was a very enthusiastic member of our community who was our race committee chairman for many years, and it is in his honor that we have this event at Club Nautico Avandaro.

This regatta was followed by arguably our best event, not only because it traditionally is the one with the best wind we have at Valle de Bravo all year, but the sponsor and yacht club go all out to have an outstanding event, more so now that the commodore of this club is our newly elected president of the Mexican Sailing Federation, Mr. Alberto Dana. This race saw the comeback of Ralph Nelles as the champion. Mr. Nelles is also a former president of the Mexican Sailing Federation who had been away from our sport for some time. But he is living proof that what is well learnt is not forgotten. It is like riding a bicycle, you never forget!

Finally, we held our National Championship on the 13th and 14th of May at Club Izar, which once more was won by....you guessed it…Kenneth Porter. This regatta was attended by the ever-growing Yucatan fleet who are very active and enthusiastic, as well as a team from San Diego, with more than 25 boats.

I am happy to say that our Class has been growing with many new sailors joining the J/24 Class, as well as many older sailors coming back to their roots.

A vivid interest has risen in the J/24 European Champion-ship (September 24-October 1, 2017): more than 40 boats from eight nations have entered the event. Most of the competitors are from Germany, but there are teams from Sweden, Greece, The Netherlands, England, Italy, Hungary and even from the United States. The organizers are excit-ed to prepare with an experienced and professional team and with interesting coastline programs for the 10-race Championship. Those who are still hesitant to enter the European Championship should be convinced by Hun-garian wines, gastronomy and the warm and beautiful water of Lake Balaton. The forthcoming registration peri-od is over by the 24th of August (up to this date, the basic EUR500 fee is applicable). The European Championship is for sure of a high standard: among the entrees, there is last year’s World Champion German team JJOne and the almost entire German fleet with 2008 J/24 European Champion Peer Kock, Stefan Karsunke with Süllberg, and from Sweden the experienced Per Hakan Persson with Front Runner. We are also looking forward to seeing compete the Greek Evniki, US Champi-on Keith Whittemore with Furio and Farkas Litkey with his Italian team. Litkey is a multiple Hungarian Champion and Olympic competitor, who won the Italian Winter Champi-onship this year. He won the biggest European lake round regatta Kékszalag+ (Blue Ribbon) 13 times so far, he is a Soling European Champion (2017, Lake Garda) and just recently won the Asso99 Hungarian Championship.

Main sponsor AUDI is assisting, and SLAM as the official clothes line sponsor is ready to launch a special collection just for the European Championship. International pro-vides a high-quality boat care package for every boat, and Julius Meinl awaits the contestants with delicious coffee every morning. BUSY SUMMER SEASON FOR THE HUNGARIAN J/24 CLASS For the J/24 Class, 2017 is all about the preparation for the European Championship. The HUN-JCA schedule includes the Fleet Championship, the One Design Trophy Series, the Fleet Regattas, the Hungarian Championship, and Friday training has provided even further tuning for the J/24 sailors. August is rather impressive and dense with regat-tas almost every weekend. The 11th of August is a Friday training regatta, and the weekend is the last round of the

One Design Trophy in Balatonfüred at Balatonfüred Yacht Club—the location of the European Championship. The 19th and 20th of August, the J/24 Class attends the two-day Fleet Regatta. Then the forthcoming event is the next weekend: the National SLAM Open Championship, also at the location of the EC. The weather is wonderful, and the beach life is vivid and fun at Lake Balaton, even at the end of August. The competitors can expect good racing condi-tions, pleasant summer wind and great battles.

The Hungarian J/24 Class welcomes the international J/24 sailors to the Open National Championship; the entry fee is EUR190 per boat. For further information contact: http://j24europeans2017.hu/ and [email protected]. Balaton – the amazing lake!

Happy sailing!
