Dear Athletes and Friends,

It is with a great deal of pride that the Board of Directors and Staff offer congratulations to all competitors, both runners and walkers, who participated in our 17th presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon.

Your smiles of joy and even your occasional tears as you crossed the Finish Line are a reminder to all of us why we work so hard during the preceding year to produce our different events. Your accomplishment is what makes it all so worthwhile.

On Monday morning The Monterey County Herald said it best with their headline wfich announced “Perfect Day, Perfect Marathon.” The following editorial was published in the Herald on Sunday, April 28, 2002. We feel that it captures the spirit of what this organization strives to become.

The Herald’s view...”Marathon Gives Back to County”:“The best runners in today’s Big Sur International Marathon will finish the race in under three hours, but the event has

long-lasting benefits for Monterey County.Since it started in 1985, the run and its related events have raised $967,000 for schools and organizations. This year, the

figure will easily push that total past the million-dollar mark.‘It might have taken 17 years to reach $1 million, but it won’t take another 17 to reach $2 million,’ predicts Dr. Hugo

Ferlito, a Monterey dentist active in the event since its start and chairman of the board since 1997.In addition to putting on a world-class race, the mission of Big Sur marathon organizers is to raise money for the health and

welfare of the area. Proceeds have helped pay for everything from musical instruments of schools to a new firehouse for Big Sur’s Mid-Coast Volunteer Fire Brigade. Big Sur groups are the biggest recipients, getting half the money raised each year, with the rest spread around the county.

Money is awarded two ways. Schools share a contribution from Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula based on their participation of the 5K run held on marathon day. And groups that provide volunteers to help put on the marathon hand the Health and Fitness expo are eligible for grants. That typically draws 2,000 volunteers, who can be seen at various events. Boy and Girl Scouts fold T-shirts, stuff envelopes, hand out water and Gatorade at the finish line and pick up garbage left behind. Central Coast Lighthouse Keepers register participants at the expo. Colton Middle School’s band plays along the course.

Last year, $145,000 in grants was awarded and $9,000 went to schools thought the 5K program. Organizers say entry fees typically cover the cost of putting on the event and money from sponsors is what goes to the charitable groups, service clubs and schools that help out. Marathon backers entered this year with some trepidation, fearing the economy might dampen contributions. One sponsor did drop out, but three new ones signed on, and organizers expect to set a new fund-raiding record.

The fact that organizers have to turn away runners every year shows that they are meeting their mission of putting on a world-class event. And the growing amount of funds raised each year shows that they’re succeeding at their companion goal of supporting the health and welfare of the region.”

1 members who participated in our annual “Director’s Run.” Unable to participate in the actual Marathon on race day, the Director’s Run is an opportunity for our running Board members to enjoy the Big Sur Marathon experience. This year they battled cold temperatures and high winds and most said Hurricane Point lived up to its name. Our 2002 winner was Bob Koyak, who, despite being bitten by a dog in the final miles, completed the course in a time of 3:26:03. Aid on the course was provided courtesy of our Grizzled Vets.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the 8th presentation of the 26.2 mile Relay. Once again, the Relay was bigger and hopefully better than ever. We had a total of 253 teams show up to experience the grandeur of the Big Sur coast (thanks in part to a lucky break in the weather!!).

We welcome all Relay runners to join us again next year. Please keep in mind that the Relay sold out in December last year and we anticipate filling even sooner for 2003.

We open for online registration on September 1, 2002, so get your teams together and sign up early.

Jeanne Golding (Team J’s Joggers) of Colorado Springs, CO said, “I was a relay runner who ran the marathon distance. Though I may be slow, I am no less of an athlete than those who broke the ribbon at the Finish line. Thanks for all your hard work.” We couldn’t agree more! Walken meander along Highway One

A:Iways a best seller, the 2002 Walk sold out in January. Our very popular stroll up Highway One ttracted a field of over 1,800

participants who enjoyed a picture perfect day for walking. Beginning at Rocky Point Restaurant, walkers enjoyed hot coffee and delicious cinnamon buns as well as the

exceptional view of the rugged coastline and pounding surf against the backdrop of Hurricane Point and Point Sur. At 7:30 their trek to Carmel began.

T he Walk is a wonderful event to be shared by families and friends...mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, fathers and sons, old friends and new. For those not up to the rigors of the full Marathon distance, the Walk is a perfect solution. It is also a haven for sidelined marathoners whose injuries won’t permit a 26.2 mile run but will allow a 10.6-mile walk. And face it...who can resist the opportunity to stroll through paradise and revel in the fragrance of spring wildflowers and the visual delights of the green coastal hillsides?

We are looking forward to our 15th presentation of the Walk in 2003 and hope you will join us. Be sure to bring along a friend or two and share in this wonderful experience together.

We ’d like to offer a big thanks to the California Department of Parks and Recreation for allowing the Start of the Power Walk to be moved into Andrew Molera State

Park next to the Big Sur River. In the predawn light, Myles Williams, co-owner of the Post Ranch Inn, gave a moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. This led Power Walker Elaine Haupt to comment, “Absolutely gave me chills up and down my spine and a tear in my eye.”

Your collective comment cards from the prior year were filled with useful suggestions which led to several changes in the 2002 event. These changes, in conjunction with near perfect weather, made this year’s Walk

one of our best ever. We had 435 finishers, the biggest field to date. All of our Power Walk “Grizzled Vets” were in attendance this year and we applaud their efforts! This year Kathleen Kastner went one better and power walked the entire 26.2 marathon course, finishing in just over 5 1/2 hours.

Registration for the 2003 Pow er Walk begins September 1, 2002. Register early online at www.bsim.org to ensure a spot in next year’s event. Last year the Power Walk was the first event to sell out, in just over 6 weeks. I look forward to seeing you at the Start line in 2003. Happy feet! o

record 2,194 participants finished thc 2002 News 46 5K presented by Community Hospital of the

Tonterey Peninsula. Superb weather, a beautiful course and a strong competitive field once again made this race a great event.

Top honors in the 5K went to repeat winner Steve Moreno of Salinas, CA. in a time of 14:58, only one second faster than his winning time in 2001. Only three seconds behind was second place finisher Steve Immel of Berkeley, CA., providing the race with a close and exciting finish. In the female division, 40 year old Linda Somers of San Luis Obispo, CA., won the women’s race in a time of 17:36, which also made her the female masters winner. She held a two second lead over runner-up Tenaya Adams of Saratoga, CA.

Held on one of the most scenic courses in the country, the event attracted a large number of elite runners. Once again, the race served as the championship race for the PAUSATF Road Grand Prix series, offering $2,500 in prize money.

T he elite runners w eren’t the only winners at the 5K. Over twenty Monterey County schools competed for cash awards based upon their level of participation in the race. Schools had the opportunity to earn one of 12 awards, with a total of $9,000 presented to the winning schools.

Well-known race magician and jester “T-Bone” provided entertainm ent prior to the race. Children joined him in a pre-race warm-up and then T-Bone joined in and ran with them on the course. Following the race, he offered a magic show. Look for T- Bone again for our 12th presentation in 2003.

Finally, we would like to thank both our dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors. Without them, we would be unable to produce such a quality event. T he Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula once more supported the Schools’ Competition by providing $7,500 of the prize monies offered. Our scenic course was in top notch condition and the Finish Line was well staffed by our many volunteers who

2002 BIG SUR-VIVORSThe Fourth Generation

The Big Sur-vivors class o f2002 is ready to meet the challenge

he fourth year of the Big Sur International Marathon Training Clinics drew a crowd of nearly 200 runners and walkers eager to take

on not only the challenge of the Marathon, but of the Power Walk and Relay as well. While some were seasoned vets who came for the incredible motivation that the Clinics provide, 68 were first time marathoners and nine had never run before. 101 Clinic attendees finished the Marathon, seven finished the Power Walk and six participated on Relay teams.

Once more we thank the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula whose generous sponsorship provided us with a place to conduct the Clinics as well as healthy refreshments for participants. Thanks as well go to T he Treadmill who provided would-be marathoners with coupons for discounts on shoes and running gear. Turtle Bay Taqueria, owned by local runner Jefferson Seay, donated “Turtle Bucks,” a nice discount

T he Big Sur-vivor’s class of 2002 is ready to m eet the challenge towards some healthy and delicious food. A panel of local runners and Big Sur vets with expertise in a

variety of venues provided support and a wealth of information on all aspects of running a marathon with an emphasis on the Big Sur course. T hey spoke on a variety of topics including training plans, running clothing, shoes, diet, stretching, injury prevention, women’s issues and motivation. Marathoners with times ranging from 2:40:00 through 5:30:00 gave their individual perspectives on how to tackle and survive the Big Sur course.

A local running club, the Wednesday Night Laundry Runners, invited clinic participants to join in their bi-weekly group runs. They also joined the Big Sur Marathon in providing support at the 2nd presentation of the “Popsicle Run,” a hilly half marathon course designed to mimic the conditions at Big Sur. In return, the proceeds from the sales of the Big Sur “Training Guide” went toward the W NLR Scholarship Fund and $2,500 went to two local high school track/cross-country students.

T he fourth generation of Big Sur-vivors proved to us and, most importantly, to themselves that they had it in them to take on the challenge of running the Big Sur

International Marathon. Some finished in just over three hours while it took others nearly seven. At the post race “Success Party” new marathoners shared pizza and their tales of what their marathon experience was like, an evening that was both intensely emotional and motivational. Tears flowed and laughter resounded as, one by one, the Big Survivors told their tales of pain, perseverance and pure joy in their personal quest to finish the Big Sur Marathon. Sore legs and blistered toes didn’t stop most of them from inquiring when they could sign up for 2003.

O ur VolunteersThe Hearts and Soles o f our events

They fold t-shirts by the thousands, they clean 26.2 miles of highway both before and after the Marathon, they hand out Gatorade and Clif Shot, and they offer a smile, a hug and

a medallion to exhausted runners finishing their race. They direct traffic and dish out pounds of pasta the night before the Marathon. They call out split times at each mile along the course for hours and offer encouragement along with fluids at the aid stations. Many arise at 3:00 a.m. race morning, if they’ve gone to bed at all. Their ranks include school children and senior citizens, men and women, and all of them are eager to pitch in and do whatever is necessary, not only on race day, but in the weeks and months preceding the event.

Many of our volunteers have been with us since the inaugural Marathon in 1986 while others are first timers. Many have friends or family participating in one or more of the Marathon weekend events and volunteering allows them to share in the excitement. All of our volunteers are NICE people who sincerely wish to see the Big Sur International Marathon continue to grow and prosper. When you see them in 2003 throughout the course of the weekend, please remember to tell them “thanks.” Without their tremendous support the BSIM would not exist, much less become the world-class event that it is today.
