    An e-Twinning Project

My Favourite Sports and Games is an e-Twinning project designed in order for different countries to come together to

discuss and present their unilateral love of sports and games. The four countries currently involved are: Croatia, Italy,

Slovakia and Turkey. The project is currently under-way with students joining international groups with the same likes (i.e.

football, swimming etc) to discuss with each other how they will present their sport.

This magazine is just a little extra side-project which the students can read and enjoy with their other friends

My Favourite Sports and Games project was started in mid-March by Slovakia and Turkey. The idea was to get

students to communicate with each other about their favourite sports and games and then to present them on

TwinSpace in whatever format they decided (slideshows, photographs, video, web links etc). Shortly after we

were joined by Italy and Croatia and the project got underway. Firstly each student produced a slideshow to

introduce themselves and tell everyone a little about their hobbies and sports/games and who, in the sportsworld,

they liked, be it a team or an individual.

After this the students were then encouraged to start communicating with each other, either using forums or via

live chat sessions. This was so the students could firstly practice their English communcation skills and secondly

start to form groups of similar likes in order to work on presentations about the sports they have in common.

The end product is to create multi-lateral presentations concerning sports, games and the healthy lifestyles

associated with these so as to give all students and teachers a more positive outlook towards health and sports.

The students also showed interest in producing a magazine that they could contribute to and show their

classmates and thus that brings us here . To our international magazine for My Favourite Sports and Games.

Thanks to all the students and teachers involved in this project witjh a special thank you to Saban CananHead

Teacher of Krklareli Merkez Ticaret Meslek Lisesi for allowing his students to participate.

Dear young e-twinners who combine the beauty of

e-twinning with their keen enthusiasm and all the kind

teachers of Krklareli who made time for this project.I am writing this, not as an ending to a project, but as a new

beginning to a bright future, as we sow the seeds of a new

    era.

Today the new generation are not only scholars but are

embracing the cultures of the world around them and this

project-closing magazine is proof of this.

The work that has been put into this project is important but

the friendships that have been made and the cultural bridges

that have been crossed must surely be of more importance.

The aim of e-twinning is to assist students on their voyagethrough the virtual world of friendships, and this projectshows that this is possible.

Being a European is not a degeneration process but an

understanding and respect of other cultures so as to embrace

each nation on their own terms, and the e-twinning projects

are the best way to introduce our youth to this.

The Our Favourite Sports and Games project gave thestudents a chance to work in teams and the responsibilities

that are involved in team-work. We must applaud these

students for facing this challenge where so many others

    would not.

We must thank the teachers involved for making the time to

work on this as we know they have busy schedules, surelythis is an epic saga.

While most people are scratching their heads thinking what

e-twinning is, this group from Krklareli have successfullycompleted this project. Because of this I, as an employee of

the R&D Unit of the Education Department and antwinningcoordinator, am very thankful.

I think that the students involved will be eager to start more

projects and their friends will want to be involved too. I wish

all those on this e-twinning project health, love, happiness

and keep up the sports until we meet in the next project.

    Oil wrestling is a traditional

Turkish sport. In fact it is

Turkeys national sport. Thewrestlers wear leather or

    buffalo skin tight trousers.

    The wrestlers are lubricated

with olive oil. This makes it

    difficult to grip and hold

your opponent, because ofthis, oil wrestling is a sport

    that requires great strength

and skill. Each year, in June,

    at the historic district of

    Edirne they hold the annual

    wrestling event called

Krkpnar, it is the oldestcontinuing sporting event in

    the world. Almost 1,000

    entrants from throughout

Turkey compete in a three-day elimination tournament.

The year 1360 is adapted by

    the organizers of the Edirne

Krkpnar as the dateOttoman soldiers started to

    organize annual oil-wrestling

tournaments in Krkpnarand it is held to

    commemorate the heroism of

    the conquering warriors

    The legendary oilwrestler

    Kurtdereli Mehmet, an oil-

    wrestler from the village of

    Kurtdere, was famous all

    over the world. Mehmet

said in an interview in 1931

    that he pictured the Turkish

    nation supporting him in

    every match. He pleased

    president Mustafa Kemal

    Atatrk very much with his

    words.

    Unlike Olympic wrestling, oil

    wrestling matches may be won

    by achieving an effective hold

of the kisbet. Thus, the pehlivan

aims to control his opponent by

    putting his arm through the

latter's kisbet. To win by this

    move is called paa kazk

    Originally, matches had no set

duration and could go on for

one or two days, until one man

    was able to establish

    superiority, but in 1975 the

    duration was capped at 40

    minutes for the baspehlivan and

    30 minutes for the pehlivan

    category. If no winner is

    determined, another 15 minutes

(10 minutes for the pehlivancategory) of wrestling ensues,

    wherein scores are kept to

    determine the victor

    One of the most popular

    sport in Croatia is handball.

    Our team is in enviable

    shape.

    We have many medals.

Handball is a team sport inwhich two teams of seven

    players each (six outfield

players and a goalkeeper)pass a ball to throw it into

Goals are scored quitefrequently; usually both teams

score at least 20 goals each,

and it is not uncommon for

both teams to score more than

30 goals. This was not true in

    the earliest history of the

    game, when the scores were

more akin to that of ice

    hockey[clarification needed].

    But, as offensive play has

improved since the late 1980s,particularly the use of

    counterattacks (fast breaks)

after a failed attack from the

    other team, goal scoring has

    increased.

The game is quite fast and includes

body contact as the defenders try tostop the attackers from approaching

    the goal.

Any contact from the side or

    especially from behind is

    considered dangerous and is usually

    met with penalties.

    Modern handball is usually played

indoors, but outdoor variants existin the forms of field handball and

    beach handball (also called sand-

    ball)

    Football is the most popular

    Sport in Italy. The Italian

    national football team has

won the FIFA World Cup 4

    times (1934, 1938, 1982, and

    2006), trailing only Brazil

    (with 5). Italy's club sides

    second national gymnastic-

    football tournament was

staged by the FNGI and waswon by S.G. Torinese. In 1898

    the Federation Italienne du

Football (FIFFIGC) wasfinally formed and the first

    national championship was

    organized, with regional

    tournaments and playoffs. This

is considered to be the first

    proper national football

    championship and was won by

    Genoa.

In 1929 the first officialtournament took place in

    Slovakia. The Tatra Cup is

    the second oldest

    tournament in Europe, after

    the Spengler Cup in

Switzerland. The firstorganization of Slovak ice

    hockey was established

    under the name of

Slovensk upakanadskho adovhohokeja as a part of theSlovak Ice Hockey

    Federation in what was

This kind of sport is, for

    me, optimal. Ice hockey is

    fast, creative and impulsive

game. I like on this sport

creativity and individualityfor some players, but the

    best adrenalin for watch is

    some skirmish or full

    Ice Hockey

    It is a fast-paced physical

    popular in areas that are

    sufficiently cold for natural

    reliable seasonal ice cover,

    such as Canada, the Czech

    The first organized competition

was held in 1930.Throughout the course of ice

    hockey history in

    players became eligible to play

    for the Czechoslovakian

Backgammon is one of theoldest board games for two

    players. The playing pieces

    are moved according to the

roll of dice, and players win

    by removing all of their

pieces from the board. Thereare many variants of

    backgammon, most of which

    share common traits.

    Backgammon is a member of

the tables family, one of theoldest classes of board

    games in the world.

    Although luck is involved

    and factors into the outcome,

    strategy plays a more

important role in the longrun. With each roll of the

dice players must choosefrom numerous options for

    moving their checkers and

    anticipate possible counter-

    moves by the opponent.

    Players may raise the stakes

during the game. There is anestablished repertoire of

    common tactics and

    occurrences.

    Like chess, backgammon has

been studied with greatinterest by computer

    scientists. Owing to this

    research, backgammon

    software has been developed

    capable of beating world-

    class human players.

    Atatrk enjoyed books and music

as well as dancing, horse riding

    and swimming. He was

    extremely interested in Zeybek

    dances, wrestling and the

    Rumelia folk songs. Games of

billards and backgammon gavehim great pleasure.

Backgammon is still a very popular game in Turkey, and it is customary to name the dice rolls with their Persian numbernames: yek (1), d (2), se (3), cehar (4), penc (5), e (6).

    Backgammon (Tavla)

The objective is to remove(bear off) all of one's own

    checkers from the board

    before one's opponent can do

    the same. The checkers are

scattered at first and may be

    blocked or hit by the

    opponent. As the playing

    time for each individual

game is short, it is often

    played in matches, where

victory is awarded to the firstplayer to reach a certain

    number of points.

    Turkeys Traditional Game

    Croatias Traditional Game

    Picigin

Picigin (pronounced "pih-tsih-gheen") is an amateur sport game

    played on some beaches in

    Croatia and Montenegro, but

also widely popular in Novi Sad,

Serbia where it is being played

on a Danube river beach. It is

played with a ball. In Croatia, itis very popular, especially in

Dalmatia and Split, where it is

played by people of all ages and

both sexes. Since some years ago

the game has been exported to

other places like Cala Graci in

    Ibiza.

    DescriptionThe game involves several

players in a circle passing around

a small ball and keeping it in theair and out of the water for aslong as possible. As such, the

    game somewhat resembles

volleyball but it is played with a

much smaller ball, the size of a

tennis ball. There are usually five

    players and much running and

    diving in the shallow water.

    Picigin is a non-competitive

    sport: there are no opposing

    sides, no points, neither winners

nor losers. It is a relaxing game

where players start slowly andspeed up when they want to. In

the heat of the game, players are

forced to run fast through the

    water and make acrobatic

manoeuvres to keep the ball inplay. Players don't catch the ball,

they bounce it around with the

    palm of the hand.

    RulesSince picigin is an amateur

sport, there are no strict or

formal rules, but it is playedaccording to tradition, with

    little variation.

    Players

There are 5 players in the

game. Two of them arecalledsidruni (sidro =anchor, they are called so

    because they do not move

    from their places) and the

    other three are runners

(trkai). The groups are oftenmixed both by gender and

    age.

    Terrain

Picigin must be played on a

sandy beach in shallowwater. The beach must be

    sandy because otherwise

    players could easily get hurt.

It's best if the water is

    nkle-deep, because of

mobility and also to softenfalls, which are common

    because there's a lot of

    jumping around trying to

    reach the ball.

    Ball

    The traditional ball, called

balun (otherwhise a dialecticname for a ball, but this

    name is strictly used,

    especially by expert players)

in picigin is actually a peeled

    tennis ball, polished off a

few milimetres. This kind ofball is best suited for

    bouncing. It is smooth and

    lighter than a normal tennis

    ball.

    Italys Traditional Game

    Briscola

    Briscola is a trick taking

game - that is, the objectof the game is to take

    cards which gives you (or

your team) a high score. It

is popular in Italy and it

    uses the Italian 40 card

deck. It is often playedwith Italian cards, which

    have suits of coins, cups,

    batons and swords, but

you may play using astandard international 52-

card deck, just byremoving the Jokers,

    eights, nines and tens.

Briscola may be played with two, three, four or six players. There is a special version for five players, which is strongly

    recommended.

Rank and value of cardsIn order to define which card wins a particular trick, we must first define a card ranking, given from highest to lowest:

ace, three, king, queen, jack, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2. Also, the cards have a point value:ace: 11 points three: 10 points King: 4 points

Queen: 3 points Jack: 2 points

The remaining cards have no point value.

    Briscola is often played with

Italian cards with suits ofswords (spade), clubs(bastoni), cups (coppe) andcoins (danari). In this casethe picture cards rank in the

    order King (re) (4 points),Horse (cavallo) (3 points),Jack(fante) (2 points). In

    North America, Italian cards

    in various regional patterns

    can be obtained fromTaroBear's Lair

As you see, the total value of

cards in the deck adds up to120 points. The player (or

    team) which scores at least

61 points in a game wins.

Games can end in a draw

    when both reach the same

point total (60), and usuallyBriscola is played to the best

    of three or five games.

Two player BriscolaThe game starts. The first to play is the player to

the right of the dealer. In the two player version,

this means that the non-dealer (A) will start.

A leads one of his three cards, face up.

B plays one of his cards, and wins or loses thetrick according to these three simple rules:

If B plays a card of the same suit as the card led by A, then the

trick is won by whoever played the higher card - the winnertakes both cards away, and puts them, face down, in a pile near

    him.

If B plays a card which has a different suit from the card which

A led, but neither card is a Briscola (trump), A wins the trick,

and the cards will go to A, even if B's card was of higher rank.

If B plays a card of a different suit from A's, and one of thecards is a Briscola (trump), then the player of the Briscola wins

    the trick.

    Slovakias Traditional Game

    Mari

Mari is the most popular cardgame in the Czech Republic and

in Slovakia. It is closely related

    to the Hungarian game Ulti.

Mari is a point trick game of themarriage group played with the Czech

32-card German suited pack. The basic

and most popular version of is for three

players, but it can also be played by

four or (as a last resort) by two. In the

three-player game, in each hand one

player plays alone against the other

two in partnership. Normally the lone

player's objective is to win more card

points than the other two players

together; card points are obtained for

winning aces and tens in tricks,

for winning the last trick, and for

holding the king and the over-knave of

a suit together in your hand. There are

bonuses for winning the last trick with

the trump seven and for taking 100 or

more card points, and the value of

these bonues can be increased by

announcing in advance in advance that

you are playing for them. As an

alternative to playing to win card

points, it is possible for a player toundertake a contract whose objective is

to win all the tricks or to lose all the

    tricks.

The 32 card pack consists of four suits: hearts or red (erven), bells or balls (kule), acorns (aludy) and leaves or green (zelen),

each with eight cards: ace (eso), king (krl), over-knave (svrekorfilek), under-knave (spodek), 10 (deset), 9 (devt), 8 (osm), 7(sedm).

The player to the dealer's left isknown as forehand(forhont).Forehand receives extra cards in the

deal, chooses the trump suit, and is

the lone player in the event that a

trump contract is played. The dealer gives a packet of seven

cards face-down to forehand, andcontinues dealing clockwise in

packets of five, so that after two

rounds of dealing forehand has 12

cards and the other two players each

    have 10

The lone player leads to the first trick. Each trick is won by the highest trumpin it, or if it contains no trumps, by the

highest card of the suit led. Any card

can be led to a trick, but the other

players are forced to follow suit, to

trump if unable to follow, and to head

the trick whenever possible subject tothose rules

    GAMES AND TEACHING ENGLISH

In games, there are knowledge, ability participation, adaptation,

sharing, being careful, making decisions, effective and moderate

behaviour. In addition to be successful,to compete,to win and

leadership are the achievements of a game.

We,as educators, know that games provide students with aneducation environment to develop their skills which will be

    useful for their future life.

Good learning atmosphere and method can guide the students tolearn more and meaningful. To accomplish such

condition, teacher must create attractive methods for theclass.Games as a matter of fact, can help and encourage many

students to sustain their interest and work.

Playing games is a useful technique when teaching English to

children and adults.Games can help with fluency and with using

the language in a conversational way.Games can be used in alesson,as a review prior to test to intrdoce new garmmar terms

or vocabulary or can serve as way to help students remember

    what they have read.

As a teacher of English, I use different kind of games in my

lessons. My students love playing games. Therefore, mystudents do not get bored while learning and I reach my targets

    THE IMPORTANCE OF PROJECTS

The projects, whether done in groups or alone, are a

very important part of the education process.

The students learn better when doing things hands on.

They research when working on it and they learn so

much more than what is even in the textbook. Projects

really broaden their knowledge. The students feel freeand they communicate with each other in a flexibleenvironment.

Our Project helps our students to feel confident. Our

students find a chance to use English outside classroom.

They are eager to learn English, as well. As a

headmaster, I support my students and my teachers totake part in such projects.

As a physicist I like to create different activities for my

students. I like to show my students that physics can befun. It was good for me and my students to participate in

this project because it took us a step away from the rules

and laws of physics into the fun world of sports and games.

I am thankful for this project as it introduced me to new

friends and happy that my pupils had more experience of

using the international language of English.
