International Kettlebell Lifting Federation BOLT Kettlebell Lifting Sport Rules for Competition and Ranking Updated July 4th, 2017

The following are the official International Kettlebell Lifting Federation (IKLF) rules and guidelines for kettlebell lifting competitions. These rules may be adjusted or updated at any time by International Kettlebell Lifting Federation. Results and rankings previously awarded by IKLF will still be honored (grandfathered in).

About BOLT

A little History

Developed in Denver, Colorado at Colorado Kettlebell Club in 2009 by Coach Nicolas Rithner to fulfil the need for a kettlebell sport that represented the American value of gender equality and the need to have a non-elitist, lifter oriented sport. This sport was referred to as American Rules Kettlebell Sport. ARKS was in every aspect like its counterpart Russian Girevoy, with the exception that in the American version, both men and women could compete in all the lifts – doubles and singles. This was an historic step forward for the kettlebell community, since the International Kettlebell Lifting Federation was the first governing body to rule in favor of gender equality at a time when women weren’t allowed to lift doubles by any of the other existing kettlebell sport governing organizations.

In 2011, ARKS was replaced by BOLT. A very rudimentary version of BOLT was already in use by IKLF as an introductory program to ARKS. However, the majority of the community requested that BOLT be organized as a full-fledged sport so that meets featuring it could be planned. Around the same time, the Girevoy international organization started to provide meets in the USA. As a result, ARKS became redundant - it was almost the same sport. Consequently, BOLT was organized into a complete sport and IKLF ceased holding ARKS events. BOLT allows the Lifter to choose the weights to use and lifts to compete in, regardless of gender.

BOLT Kettlebell Lifting Sport measures the Lifter’s overall work capacity within the framework of its lifts and events. This is IKLF’s exclusive sport and emphasizes strength and endurance, rewarding a good balance of both qualities. Scoring is calculated using the International Kettlebell Lifting Volume Scoring System (IVSS), which is Base Volume plus Raw Volume (total kettlebell weight times 40, plus total kettlebell weight times total repetitions). BOLT offers a variety of events and challenges with sets ranging from 5 to 60 minutes.

Popular events such as the BOLT Iron Man and the Medleys reward Lifters who train comprehensively and have great endurance. Athletes may also specialize in a specific lift – or family of lifts – to accommodate their preferences, training schedule, or body limitations.

We look forward to having you join us at the next local competition and supporting you to a new personal best or higher rank on the table. We're sure you'll enjoy the great camaraderie the BOLT community offers!

Welcome to IKLF,

Nico Rithner Founder

Gender

Gender Definition

The state of being male or female

Gender Determination

1. Gender will be determined by inspecting a legal form of identification such as National Passport or Driver's License.

2. Transsexual Lifters may compete in a specific Gender Category after having completed sex reassignment surgery, being legally recognized as a member of the sex they wish to compete as, and having undergone two years of hormonal therapy (unless they transitioned before puberty).

Division Changes

Age Division Changes

1. Lifters may voluntarily change Divisions upward. Open Division Lifters may not switch Divisions. 2. Division changes must be requested at or prior to Meet Check-in.

Compulsory Age Division Changes Due To Deserted Age Division.

1. An Age Division with only one participant is considered deserted. 2. When an Age Division is deserted the Lifter is compulsorily transferred to the next Age Division with

competitors that is closest to the Open Division. 3. Members of the Open Division may not move up or down divisions. 4. This rule does not apply to Youth.

Compulsory Weight Class Changes Due To Deserted Weight Class.

1. A Weight Class with only one participant is considered deserted. 2. When a Weight Class is deserted, the Lifter is compulsorily transferred to the next Weight Class.

BOLT - Standard Competitions

BOLT Iron Man qualifies for ranking using IVSS score. Individual lifts are volume scored during competition to determine place. Lifters who wish to rank Pro or above during competition must film their set for verification by IKLF Headquarters.

BOLT 5 Minute Race: Lifters race for up to 5 minutes. Lifters can choose from 1 to 6 lifts to compete in.

BOLT 10 Minute Race: Lifters race for up to 10 minutes. Lifters may choose from 1 to 6 lifts to compete in.

BOLT Iron Man (BIM) Competing BOLT Iron Man requires that a Lifter complete all six lifts during a single competition. Each lift set may be 5 minutes or 10 minutes depending on what has been stipulated beforehand for the meet. The Lifter is given a mandatory break of at least 5 minutes between lift sets for 5 minute lift sets, and 10 minutes for 10 minute lift sets. The order of lifts is as follows:

• Double Snatch • Double Jerk • Double Clean and Jerk • Snatch • Jerk • Clean and Jerk

Meet Competition Schedule

Order of Events:

1. Double Snatch 2. Double Jerk 3. Double Clean and Jerk 4. Snatch 5. Jerk 6. Single Clean and Jerk

Competition Order by Age Division, Gender and Weight Category:

1. Youth – Women, then Men. Group 1 to Group 2 2. Junior – Women, then Men. Group 1 to Group 2 3. Open – Women, then Men. Group 1 to Group 2 4. Masters – Women, then Men. Group 1 to Group 2

Schedule Changes and Rest Breaks

• Once the Lifters are called to the platforms, no schedule changes are allowed. • During Season Events, Lifters are granted at least 5 minutes of rest between events. During Championship

Events (State, Nationals/Regionals, Worlds), all Lifters must receive a fixed rest period of 10 minutes between each of their sets. This is to ensure fairness for BOLT Iron Man athletes. In order to achieve this, Hub Leaders may combine lifts and categories (gender, age, weight) within heats. Livestream or video of the event must be taken, with a running clock in-frame should there be a need for verification.

• A Lifter who misses a scheduled heat forfeits it. No refunds will be issued regardless of the reason for forfeiting.

• Lifters must report to their platform judges at the “Roll Call”, in which Lifters’ names and their designated platforms are announced. If the Lifter doesn’t check in with the judge at the “Heat #__Time’s up” call, the attempt is considered forfeited.

IKLF Volume Scoring System (IVSS)

The IKLF Volume Scoring System (IVSS) gives each Lifter a “head start” number (Base Volume) based on the weight they choose to compete with. The purpose of this system is to level the field and to encourage Lifters to progressively increase the weights they compete with.

Base Volume

To find the Lifter’s Base Volume take the competition load (total weight of the kettlebell(s)) and multiply it by 40.

Example:

Lifter A and Lifter B are competing in the Snatch event. Lifter A uses a 12kg kettlebell and Lifter B uses a 16kg kettlebell.

Lifter A's Base Volume would be: 12 kg x 40 = 480 kg

Lifter B's Base Volume would be: 16kg x 40 = 640 kg

How to Calculate Final Score using IVSS

To find the final score, take your Base Volume and add it to your Raw Volume, which is the total volume lifted (repetitions multiplied by the weight lifted per repetition). The resulting value is your IVSS Score. We use this score to determine placement in the competition and BOLT Iron Man rank.

Example:

Lifter A completed 180 repetitions with a 12kg kettlebell. The Raw Volume is: 12kg x 180 = 2160 kg. We add that to the Base Volume and the IVSS Score is 480kg + 2160 kg = 2640 kg

Lifter B completed 150 repetitions with a 16kg kettlebell. The Raw Volume is: 16kg x 150 = 2400 kg. We add that to the Base Volume and the IVSS Score is 640kg + 2400 kg = 3040 kg

Tie Breaker

A competition results in a tie when Lifters of the same weight category and age division produce the same amount of total volume.

When there is a tie at the end of the competition, the placement will be decided using the following criteria:

1. Kettlebell weight. The Lifter using the heaviest kettlebell places ahead. 2. Lifter’s body weight. If both Lifters compete with kettlebells of the same weight, the lighter body weight Lifter

places ahead.

“Count” and “No Count” Lifts

Lockout

For a repetition to be complete and considered valid - a “Count” by the Judge - the Lifter must achieve Full Body Lockout.

Full Lockout 1. The kettlebell must have stopped moving and the Lifter must demonstrate control of it in the overhead

position. 2. The arm must be fully extended (elbow extended). 3. The arm must be vertical to the ground. 4. The arm must be behind the Lifter’s chin. 5. Legs must be fully extended (Knee extension)

Rack Lockout Between Jerk repetitions and after each Clean the Lifter must reach the Rack Lockout position. Skipping this position will result in a “No Count”

1. The kettlebell must have stopped moving and the Lifter demonstrate control of it in the Rack position. 2. Legs must be fully extended (Knee extension) 3. There must be a pause in Rack position prior to performing the Jerk portion of the lift. Going directly from

Clean to a Jerk or from a previous Jerk to a new one is considered “rebounding” and results in a “No Count.”

BOLT Lifts Specific Rules and Definitions

IKLF Definitions

Positions

“Lockout” position

The main joint in the area of reference is fully extended and no longer moving. Example "Knees Lockout” means the knees are fully extended.

“Full Body Lockout” position

In this position, the knees, hips, and elbows are fully extended and the shoulder fully flexed (arm vertical to the ground). The kettlebell must immobilized overhead with the working arm behind the Lifter’s chin. All BOLT lift repetitions are considered complete when the Lifter reaches the “Full Body Lockout” position.

“Rack Position” and “Rack Lockout”

The kettlebells are held immobile at chest level and the Lifter’s knees and hips are fully extended.

“Lockout Fixation”

The kettlebell stops moving in the lockout position before being lowered.

“No Count”

An incomplete repetition results in a “No Count.” Example: Lack of “Lockout” or lack of “Fixation” are reasons why a repetition may be deemed incomplete and labeled as a “No Count.”

Actions

Press

Moving a hand-held kettlebell upwards from Rack Position by means of elbow extension and flexion of the shoulder joint, ending in Full Body Lockout Position.

Push Press

Moving a hand-held kettlebell upwards from Rack Position by flexing and extending the knees and finishing with a Press, ending in Full Body Lockout Position. Note: The Push Press may or may not include hip and ankle flexion and extension, however it must involve knee flexion and extension.

Snatch

Moving a hand-held kettlebell upwards in one continuous motion without pressing it.

Half Snatch

Lowering a kettlebell to the Rack Position from the Full Body Lockout Position before initiating a new Snatch.

Hand Switch

Exchanging the kettlebell from one hand to the other.

Clean

Moving a hand-held kettlebell to the Rack Lockout from a lower position.

Direct Cast

Transitioning directly from the Full Body Lockout Position to a point below waist level. This is only allowed in Snatch.

Lifts Specifications and Rules

Double Snatch (DS)

Snatch and Double Snatch. Lift Specifications and Rules

Equipment: Snatch: One kettlebell. Double Snatch: Two kettlebells of the same weight.

Description:

In competition the “Snatch” and “Double Snatch” include the following parts:

1. Snatch 2. Full Body Lockout 3. Casting

Rules:

1. The Snatch starts with the kettlebell(s) set on the ground. 2. At the call of "3-2-1 Start!" The Lifter snatches the kettlebell(s) to the Full Body Lockout Position. 3. The lift is completed at Full Body Lockout Position. Once this position is reached the lift is considered complete and a

count is given by the Judge. 4. Lifters must demonstrate a brief, but distinct pause in the Full Body Lockout Position with the kettlebell(s) stationary

overhead. This is referred to as “Fixation.” The Lifter must wait for the Judge to give the count in order for the lift to be complete.

5. Transition between repetitions: Following the Full Body Lockout Position and after the Judge’s count, the Lifter may initiate a new repetition by first lowering the kettlebell(s) directly down (Direct Cast) or – if the Lifter so chooses - dropping the kettlebell(s) into the Rack Position prior to performing the next snatch (Half Snatch). The kettlebell(s) may be immediately cast out into the next snatch (touch and go) or the Lifter may pause in the Rack Position before performing the next snatch.

6. Dipping or squatting to catch the kettlebell(s) is permitted, but the arms must lock out before the hips and knees and Full Body Lockout achieved in order for the repetition to be counted.

7. Press Out: Pressing is not allowed and will result in a “No Count.”

Warnings, No counts, Judge’s Stopped Set, and Disqualification

Warnings

1. Warnings are given by the Judge when the Lifter is lifting unsafely, interacting with coaches, teammates, or other competitors during the set, or for misconduct.

2. If the Lifter commits a third infraction after receiving two warnings he/she becomes disqualified. 3. Sportsmanship rules violations have a one warning only tolerance level. 4. If a Lifter is stopped due to safety concerns, this is not a disqualification and all completed repetitions will be

counted towards the Lifter’s score.

Disqualification

A set may be ended for any of the following reasons:

1. Misconduct (see “Sportsmanship”) resulting in disqualification. 2. Too many warnings (see “Violations and Warnings”) resulting in disqualification. 3. Safety: set termination due to safety is not a disqualification.

Violations

1. It is considered a “Violation” to break any of the rules that apply to a particular event, including “Sportsmanship” rules.

2. Violations may result in “Warnings” or “Disqualification”

Sportsmanship

IKLF encourages the pursuit of excellence, camaraderie and mutual respect. The development of individuals of strong character, who are supportive of the kettlebell sport lifting community – as manifested by good sportsmanship - is paramount to this organization. Lifters, Coaches and Aides are expected to abide by the highest standards of conduct. Tantrums or acts of destruction – such as dumping the kettlebells on the platform – are strictly prohibited.

Use of offensive language, signage, or conduct is not permitted during IKLF official, certified, or IKLF sponsored events. Examples of such behavior include: use of profane language, insulting or booing, bullying or threatening, angry yelling, or physical assault.

Any such behavior may earn the offender a warning, disqualification of an event’s scores, ban from competing during the remainder of the season, and/or suspension or permanent expulsion from the league, depending on the magnitude of the offense.

IKLF’s greatest goal is to foster a safe and supportive family-friendly athletic community. Coaches will be reminded of these rules at the beginning of every competition during debriefing. The Announcer or Event Director will issue a reminder of these rules to spectators, Lifters and support staff at the beginning of an event and will follow up as necessary.

Terminated Attempts

Single-Attempt Rule

Only one attempt per lift type per meet is allowed. For example, if a Lifter competing Snatch isn’t happy with his/her score, he/she may not compete Snatch in another heat of the same meet in hopes of achieving a better score.

Failed Attempts

1. A repetition is consider a “Failed attempt” when a Lifter is unable to successfully complete a repetition within the rules standards.

2. A “Failed Attempt” is consider a “No count.”

Self-Terminated Attempts

1. A Lifter may voluntarily terminate his/her attempt by leaving the platform during his/her set prior to the timer counting down to zero.

2. Accidentally losing control of the kettlebell(s) is considered a “Self-Terminated Attempt.”

General Provisions

Equipment and Competition Environment

Kettlebells

1. Standard competition kettlebells or cast iron kettlebells are allowed at IKLF competitions. However, the following requirements must be met:

o The handles must be smooth and free of edges or sharp areas (chipped paint, ridges or other rough areas).

o The body of the kettlebell must be spherical, smooth and even, with no protrusions that could cause injury to the Lifter.

2. Prior to competition, meet directors must ensure that the kettlebells they provide are accurately marked for weight.

3. Kettlebells brought along by Lifters must be weighed by Meet Officials at Check In prior to the competition, or be certified by IKLF Officials.

4. Kettlebell weight cannot differ from standard weights by more than 0.12 kg (0.264 lbs). 5. Bell weights must be expressed in kilograms for entry into competition spreadsheets. The formula to covert

pounds to kilograms is: number of pounds divided by 2.2046 = kilograms 6. Kettlebell handles must not be coated (with exception of chalk), polished or painted.

Platform

The competition platform must be:

1. A fixed non-slippery surface that will not shift. 2. A firm even surface that will not give (buffer) during the leg drive. Example: plywood or stall mat on plywood. 3. A delimited lifting area for each Lifter competing during a heat of at least 4 x 4 feet (1.2 x 1.2 meters). 4. Each platform must be separated by at least 1 foot (or 30 cm) from the other platforms.

Meet Environment

The Meet Host must make all reasonable efforts to provide an environment conducive to high performance

The preferred setting would be a place:

1. Isolated from external distractions 2. Well ventilated 3. Well lit 4. Large enough to provide extra room for Lifters to warm up and separate themselves from the public and

other competitors 5. Not too cold or too hot 6. Accessible restroom facilities 7. Accessible drinking water

Page 23: International Kettlebell Lifting Federation Competition Rules
