Joop Ellenbroek, IIMS member, passes away after a lengthy battle with illnessIt is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the passing away of IIMS member and CCS founder Mr Johannes Wilhelmus ‘Joop’ Ellenbroek. Although Joop passed away on September 9 after a lengthy illness, news has only just reached the IIMS office of his death.

Joop was well known within the coatings, chemicals and superyacht industry and much respected by all he worked with. After many years of working for paint manufacturers, he began his career in the superyacht industry in 1994 when he founded CCS (Coating Consultants for Superyachts), which due to his efforts is now one of the most well-known and respected coating surveying companies in the world.

In 2007 Ellenbroek began providing technical and coatings advice to ICOMIA and ISO-TC8/SC12/WG5 (the ISO related to superyachts and quality standards). One of the first members of WG5, Ellenbroek contributed to the development of ISO 11347 (how to measure the quality of superyacht coatings) and on the drafts of ISO 19494.

In recent years, Joop had contributed significantly behind the scenes to IIMS life. He authored part

of the content for the Registered Marine Coatings Inspectors (RMCI) qualification, which was launched in 2014. He was also a stakeholder in the RMCI programme as well as an advisor and occasional trainer of the material too.

“We mourn his passing and give thanks for his life of service to our recreational marine industry, and his years of friendship,” says Udo Kleinitz, ICOMIA secretary general. “Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the Ellenbroek family at this tragic time.”

Joop was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. We extend our sincere condolences to the Ellenbroek family at this tragic and sad time.

RIP Joop Ellenbroek.

Certifying Authority training day 31 October

All IIMS CA coding surveyors are reminded that the next CA training day will take place on Monday 31 October from 09.30 to 16.30.

The venue for what is a classroom based day’s training is PETA Ltd, Access Point, Northarbour Road, Portsmouth PO6 3TE.

Over the summer months, Fraser Noble has developed a general refresher presentation on Code Surveying and will present this as the cornerstone of the day. The session is designed to stimulate questions, discussion, debate and answers over the course of the day.

For the first time proper, this day’s training will be made open and available on a video conferencing link, allowing the presenters to screen share content with delegates and allowing the delegates to be interactive in the discussion too. This initiative will make it easier (and more cost effective) for those further afield around the world to attend in an online capacity.

The cost for the day is £75 per person, to include a working buffet lunch.

To reserve your place at the CA training day, please email Tania Bernice at [email protected], or call on +44 (0) 23 9238 5223.

If you plan to join by video conferencing link, please advise Tania at the time of reserving your place and we will send you details of how to do this.

Online video conferencing Report Writing seminar ran very well!Having successfully tested the Zoom video conferencing platform, yacht and small craft surveyors from around the world were invited to join the first IIMS online training course in Report Writing, which was fully interactive. The course was run by John Kilhams (who delivers the regular face to face programme) on Monday 12 September and attracted nearly 20 participants. He was assisted by Paul Homer who joined remotely. Commencing at 08.00 UK time, the seminar ran for nearly three and a half hours. It was pleasing to see members online from Canada and Grenada in the west, for whom this was a night time session.

The seminar was charged out at £50 and 3 CPD points were awarded for online attendance. The Report Writing seminar was recorded and those who attended will receive a copy of the video, plus copies of the two powerpoint presentations and a couple of sample reports.

First to formally feedback after the seminar was Uday Moorthi, who said, “I must say it was a successful pilot venture and very well coordinated. The re-cap of the main report writing points were an eye opener and added to my learning curve. Thanks for the opportunity. Lovely effort.”

Speaking about the seminar, Mike Schwarz commented, “This is excellent technology and will give us the scope to reach out to members all over the world as we develop a plan of online training seminars. Watch out for news as we build and launch a plan for 2017, which you will be invited to participate in.”

IIMS would like to pass on their thanks to John and Paul for delivering a successful first online seminar.

Report Magazine – special commemorative issue now publishedAt 80 pages, the September issue of The Report magazine is the biggest issue ever published. There are many pages turned over to photos taken at the 25th Anniversary Conference, Gala Dinner, Awards and AGM of course, but this issue is also packed with other great content and features too.

The hidden dangers of carbon monoxide afloat is a topic every surveyor should be aware of, especially in light of recent high profile deaths onboard vessels. In this specially commissioned feature article, Susan Stockwell lifts the lid on this subject. Nick Parkyn looks at synthetic rigging and cloud computing. Paul Homer is the subject of ‘A day in the life of ’. Nippin Anand tackles the thorny subject of debunking the myths of the safety management system. There are also articles on lashing and verified gross mass, as well as a marine surveyor’s report on the new ‘Insurance Act 2015’.

Regional Branch newsThere are some changes to report at IIMS regional branches.

After many years ‘in charge’ as the inaugural Regional Director of IIMS New Zealand, Capt Barry Thompson has stood down and relinquished the role to a ‘younger’ man in Mike Austin, who has agreed to take up the post. However Mike takes this role with a slight difference. After discussions, it has been decided to formally moth ball the branch and disband the committee in due course. IIMS head office will hold funds so that in the event the branch wishes to re-establish itself in the future under the direction of a new committee, there will be funds available to help it get started.

After many years and a successful stint as Regional Director of the IIMS India Branch, Milind Tambe formally steps down on 5 October following the 25th Anniversary Conference in Mumbai, which will be his last official engagement in this role. Pervez Kaikobad has agreed to take up the challenge and to become the new Regional Director to build on the excellent work done by Milind over recent years.

Catch up with reports, photos and videos of the 25th Anniversary Conference and AGMIn case you missed the 25th Anniversary Conference, Gala Dinner, Conference and AGM, or missed an initial report of events in last month’s new bulletin, a range of full reports are now available to read, (including photo galleries) on the IIMS web site.

The IIMS Head Office team would like to say many thanks to both Barry and Milind who have executed their individual roles with consummate professionalism at all times.

The IIMS UAE Branch ran a successful one day seminar on 19 September, the title of which was ‘Practical Guidelines to Cargo Surveying in the Middle East’. There were a number of first class presentations given on the day and the seminar, held at the Dubai International Seafarer Centre, attracted a good turnout of delegates.

New CPD table publishedIIMS has published a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points table, operational from 1 October, with two additional activities that members may take advantage of to help towards keeping their CPD current.

The first is attendance at one of the new online video conference training seminars being run by IIMS. Anyone joining an online training session will earn 3 CPD points. The other activity relates to having watched IIMS original content videos. There are now over 70 videos filmed at various IIMS conferences in the past couple of years. A member who watches any three videos may claim I CPD point (only one available per year).

New disciplinary rules and proceduresAt the recent AGM, some amendments to the existing IIMS disciplinary procedures were presented for a vote and unanimously accepted. The management board had not reviewed the procedures for some considerable time. Having looked at them afresh, it was felt that there were insufficient sanctions open to the management board in the event that further action against a member was required to be taken. The amended procedures can be viewed at this link.
