The purpose of this guide is to provide a resource on worldwide transportation libraries and informationcenters for domestic and international professionals in the highway transportation field.

The list is comprised of transportation libraries and information centers which have coverage of highwaytransportation topics in their collections and serial holdings.

INTRODUCTION

This guide, Volume 1 - Highway Transportation Libraries and Information Centers, is part of theInternational Guide to Highway Transportation Information—a multi-volume set of guides that providehighway transportation information resources for domestic and international professionals. The guides areuseful for the traffic engineer, transportation planner, and intelligent transportation systems specialist, as wellas academics, applied researchers, administrative officials, and highway transportation information andlibrary professionals. The guides are also useful for civil engineers or other professionals in highwayconstruction, operations, and materials; as well as highway safety and human factors engineers;psychologists; and social scientists. Volume 2 will identify web sites; Volume 3 will identify documentdelivery suppliers; Volume 4 will identify bibliographic and non-bibliographic databases; and Volume 5 willidentify highway transportation research centers, associations, organizations, and other professionalsocieties. A final guide will also incorporate all five volumes and include an index. The volumes will beavailable in electronic form on FHWA’s International Programs web site (www.international.fhwa.dot.gov).The final guide will also be produced in hard copy.

Information sources for member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) and other selected countries are included in the guides. The list of countries includes: Argentina,Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxemburg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway,Poland, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, andUnited States.

For this volume, several research and information search methods were used in identifying and collectingappropriate information for the guides. They include: using telephone, telefax, and electronic mailcorrespondence with government officials and staff from transportation libraries and information centers;reviewing existing directories of transportation information sources; conducting searches in computerizedonline and CD-ROM transportation-related subject databases; and conducting comprehensive searcheson the Internet using several search engines, as well as accessing transportation information and library-related web sites.

In this Volume 1, information about each library/information center is displayed in tabular form, oneinstitution per page. Information includes: name of country; name of library/information center (in nationallanguage and English); mailing address; telephone and fax numbers; e-mail address; web site; contact;coverage (topics covered in library); collection size - titles (i.e., books, reports, monographs, conferenceproceedings, other literature) and serials (i.e., journals, periodicals, bulletins, newsletters); specialcollections; and additional information.

A comprehensive investigation on interlibrary loan or sales policies has not been conducted. Futureversions of the guide may include this information. Users can pursue this information upon contact withthese libraries.
