Over 30 countries were represented. At the opening of the main session ICOI Co-chair, Dr. Kenneth Judy, read the following letter from his friend and colleague, Dr. Carl E. Misch.

“Dear ICOI Delegates,

I am not able to be with you in Tokyo at World Congress XXXI, however, I would like to thank all of the families that have encouraged their husbands or wives and friends to attend.

Our field and the ICOI have been growing asymptotically and it is necessary to invest more and more of your time in your education. This is a challenge for the ICOI and we need your support as students, teachers and researchers.

My very best personal wishes to all who have helped organize this landmark World Congress.

With my best regards I remain sincerely,

Dr. Carl E. Misch.”

The Tokyo World Congress featured the most exciting poster presentations of any implant meeting anywhere. Two full rooms of walls and panels were proudly displayed by the over 100 presentations from such countries as Germany, the USA, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and many others. The quality of these posters, and the number of them, required numerous judges, namely 18, who were chaired by Dr. Shohei Kasugai. The winners were as follows:

Basic Research Winners:First Place: Dr. Kenzo Morinaga - Development of Jaw Models with Pseudo Sinus Membranes for Surgical Training Using 3D Printer: Questionnaire Survey Results of Experienced Dentists.

Prior to packaging and terminal sterilization, every lot of enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft is tested in vitro for a minimum threshold of BMP-2. All lots that pass this initial test then undergo a final post-sterilization in vivo

osteoinduction assay in the athymic rat model* to verify their osteoinductive potential. Any lot that fails either test is not released.

enCore® 70/30 Combination Allograft combines the synergistic characteristics of slowly resorbing, space-maintaining mineralized

cortical bone with osteoinductive demineralized matrix to provide an optimized environment for the regeneration of vital bone.

The program chairmen for this event deserve a thank you and congratulations. They were Professor Koichi Ito and Professor Jon B. Suzuki.

There was an election and a smooth transition of presidential terms that took place at this meeting. Dr. Jon B. Suzuki became the immediate Past-President, and Dr. Gerard Scortecci was welcomed as the new President of the ICOI. We thank Dr. Suzuki for his many accomplishments during his term of office, and we wish Dr. Scortecci well in his new leadership position.

Our gracious hosts in Japan managed to include “a trifecta”; that is, exhibitors, credentials and a Formal Gala. Many exhibitors were more than pleased to see the aisles filled with attendees and standing 3-deep at various booths. The new Fellows, Masters and Diplomates were excited to receive their certificates and medallions to the cheers and applause of family and friends. The Gala capped the celebration of

Dr. Toshihiko Nagata, President, The Japanese Society of Periodontology, Prof. Koichi Ito, program chair World Congress XXXI and Dr. Gerard Scortecci, ICOI President.

a successful meeting by having an extraordinary turnout for dinner, music and entertainment. The entertainment itself was enthralling as a Japanese troupe of dancers in full costumes displayed their talents in traditional dance to the beat of drummers. To all of our Japanese colleagues, we say KUMBAI!!

The 1st Congress of the newly born Sardinia Association of Implantologists, AIS, was held in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, on September 12-13, 2014.

The event was organized with the co-operation of AISI, an Italian association affiliated with ICOI, and had the support of different Italian Universities as well as of ICOI, officially represented by Dr. Oleg Nashtatik.

Under the leadership of Dr. Severino Mei, President of AIS, and Dr. Marco Piras, chairman of the Congress, well known speakers from all over Italy, with the addition of Dr. Nashtatik, from New York, shared their knowledge and experience in different dental fields.

The congress’ main topic was “Modern Dentistry: Natural Teeth Preservation vs. Implants”, which gave the opportunity to discuss Implant Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Occlusion, Lasers applied to Implantology, Bone Regeneration and much more.

The scientific level of the event was remarkable, the discussions lively and interesting, but they were not the only positive aspects. A friendly, hospitable atmosphere over the breaks and the social moments made the congress very pleasant too. A superb dinner in a typical Sardinian restaurant, with gourmet seafood and excellent wines, was among the highlights of these two days in Cagliari.

The Congress was an excellent opportunity for ICOI to strengthen its relationships with two Italian implant societies, AIS and AISI, as Dr. Nashtatik stressed in his address to the delegates, and Drs. Mei and Ferrante confirmed on behalf of the two societies they lead.

Italy will host another important implant event next February 27-28, 2015, when AISI will hold its 15th International Congress in Bologna on “Forensic Controversies in Implant Prosthodontics: How to Avoid/Face Them”. All the ICOI members and affiliates are warmly welcome to attend.

ICOI has had three affiliate societies in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The ICOI recognized one of them in the summer of 2014 as a Component Society due to rapid growth and educational actions of that society. A full description of this Component Society has been published in the previous issue of ICOI International News.

On October 30, 2014 the chairmen of two ICOI societies in Iran sat together in Tehran to join their activities, potentials and capabilities of two societies in a way to improve the position and effectiveness of ICOI in Iran.

Dr. Mojtaba Seyedein, ICOI Vice President and chairman of the Iranian Center of Oral Implantology, a Component Society of ICOI in Iran and Mr. Amir Falakeh, the chairman of Iran Implant Innovations, an affiliate society of ICOI in Iran which was represented by Dr. Ahangari, an ICOI Vice President as well, signed a merger agreement.

Iran COI the Component Society of ICOI, took action from November 1st and the members of Iran Implant Innovations were accepted as original members since November 5th 2014.

The board members of the Iran COI believe that with this merger, Iranian dentistry will benefit from more centralized actions in providing educational facilities and credentialing programs in the field of implant dentistry.

This merger certainly will improve ICOI’s presence, supervision and support in Iran, which these days is highly expected by

Iranian dentistry, especially in conjunction with academic institutions and official authorities in Iran. ICOI was the first international society recognizing and credentialing implant education in Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a country with 78 million people, population 70% under 30 years old and has over 60 dental schools.

Despite the struggles facing this nation, implant dentistry has grown dramatically both in education of professionals and treatments offered to patients. Hopefully more and more people will come regionally and internationally to experience the rapid scientific and health treatment now present in Iran professional meetings and enjoy its superb hospitality.

INDIA ICOI Foundation Day Program in Bangalore

AroundThe World

ICOI South East Asia has started primer programs for new entrants to implantology with the 2-day ICOI Foundation Day Program. Essentially these programs are for new entrants to the field of implantology. The program is a boon to those who want to start an implant practice but don’t know who to ask and who to trust. ICOI is the natural answer.

The first program was held at DAPMRV, Bangalore on April 13-14, 2014 and attended by over 200 participants. An ICOI Credentialing Ceremony was held where 21 members were conferred ICOI credentialing.

The second program was held at Thaimoogambigai Dental College, Chennai on July 19-20, 2014 which also had attendance of over 200 participants. This program was conducted jointly with Indian Dental Association Madras Chapter. An ICOI Credentialing Ceremony was held where 9 members were conferred ICOI Credentialing.

Eminent speakers such as Dr. Kishore Nayak – President of ICOMS, ICOI Ambassador Prof. Dr. Girish Rao, Dr. Anandakrishna GN, Prof. Dr. T. V. Padmanabhan, Dr. V. Rangarajan – Secretary of Indian Prosthodontic Society and President of IDA Madras Chapter, Prof. Dr. D. Arunachalam, Dr. Fayaz Pasha and team of ISG enlightened the participants on how to learn and start an implant practice. A unique format of the program was “question your speaker” session which helped participants get answers to essential elements.

All the participants were given hands-on session on different systems to let them get the “feel” of implants and prosthetics. These participants are encouraged to join the ICOI Education Programs conducted by different ICOI Affiliated Study Clubs in South East Asia.

Both the programs were held under leadership of Implant Study Group, an Affiliate Study Club of ICOI. The organizing team of ISG is headed by ICOI Ambassador Prof. Dr. Girish Rao and Dr. Anandakrishna GN with their ex-students who form part of an enthusiastic organizing team.

The feedback from participants is very positive and this program is now slated to be held in different cities in the South East Asia region.

INDIA Record 183 Dentists Take Up ICOI Credentialing at 3rd ICOI South East Asia Symposium in Hyderabad, IndiaICOI movement is getting popular in South East Asia with membership and credentialing increasing manifold in 2014.

At the recently concluded 3rd ICOI South East Asia Symposium held July 25-27, 2014 at JRC Conventions, Hyderabad in the newly formed State of Telangana in India, a record 178 proud dentists got the coveted ICOI credentials.

Aptly titled “The New Frontiers in Implant Dentistry” the Symposium received a record 700 plus delegates from South East Asia. The Symposium was headed by Dr. Vikas Gowd, the proud ICOI Study Club owner of School of Dental Implants. The organizing team was guided by the recently formed ICOI South East Asia Scientific Committee which is headed by Co-Chairmen Dr. Firoze Mirza – the Father of Implantology in India; Prof. Dr. Mahesh Verma – Dean at Maulana Azad Dental School in New Delhi and the current President of Indian Dental Association who is also the Chairman of the forthcoming FDI Congress to be held in New Delhi; and Lt. Gen. Vimal Arora – the Director General of Dental Services in India. The Scientific Committee includes owners of the most prominent and active ICOI affiliated Study Clubs in the region.

The scientific once again set the gold standard in South East Asia with neatly designed topic-wise sessions at the end of each, the delegates held a healthy discussion. Dr. Anandakrishna GN of Bangalore is the ICOI Scientific Committee Co-ordinator whose hard work to put together a fantastic scientific program and then maintaining it on schedule – a unique feat in India – was commended by all.

For the first time in South East Asia at an Implant Symposium, a Lab Forum was successfully held. Dr. Prasad Joshi who

is the ICOI Scientific Committee Co-ordinator for Lab Programs conducted the Lab Forum to an enthusiastic group who had never been to a implant meeting and were pleasantly surprised to be at one.

The Symposium had more than 10 pre-congress courses all of which were over-booked, again a record in the region.

The Symposium was inaugurated by the ICOI Scientific Co-Chairmen and the Symposium Chairman Dr. M. S. Gowd. This was followed by Oration Lectures by the Scientific Co-chairmen. Dr. Firoze Mirza brought the delegates up-to-date with a history of implantology of more than 40 years; Lt. Gen. Vimal Arora had a hard-hitting lecture that showed glimpses of research and the future of Implantology as also discussed the Ministry of Defense Model for Implantology; Dr. Mahesh Verma spoke in his trade-mark style giving the dentists the information they didn’t have – on the updates in education and ethical practices and also Practice Management. The good news he announced for the Indian dentists was advertising is now permitted.

Star speakers at the Symposium were Prof. Dr. Girish Rao, Dr. Anandakrishna GN, Dr. Glenn Mascarenhas, Dr. Christian

Berger, Prof. Dr. Sudhindra Kulkarni, Dr. Thomas Hanser, Dr. T. V. Narayan, Dr. Tarun Kumar, Dr. Eugene Marais, Dr. Minas Leventis, Dr. Antonin Simunek, Prof. Dr. Daniel Rothamel, Drs. Andrea and Alessandro Agnini, Prof. Dr. Sanjay Kalra, Dr. Paresh Kale, Dr. Jaibin George, Dr. Ratnadeep Patil, Dr. Kiran Kelkar, Dr. Anand Murthy, Dr. Ajit Shetty, Dr. Sandesh Mayekar, Dr. Porus Turner and Dr. Shilpa Shetty amongst others.

The Symposium also helped delegates showcase their talents through paper presentations, poster presentations and free table presentations. Also held was a Young Implantologists Forum.

The trade participated enthusiastically the credit for which goes to Dr. Venkat Reddy.

Hyderabad is known as the City of Royalty and the food is well-known for its royal flavor. The guests were treated at the Inaugural Dinner and the Credentialing Banquet to the best Hyderabadi Biryani – lamb cooked with rice and spices; and Haleem – minced lamb cooked with spices. Both the dishes are cooked on a slow fire over several hours to bring out the flavor. Needless to say the food was outstanding.

Dr Firoze Mirza thanks ICOI Hyderabad Symposium Committee on behalf of ICOI HQ.

Itemsof InterestMiami Doctor Headed for the DeepICOI Diplomate and Vice President for Latin-America, Dr. Alvaro Ordonez is pursuing his passion for deep sea fishing, but not from a boat. Alvaro, is training for the World Cup in spear fishing, a sport where “fishermen” dive as much as 150 feet to spear a fish. He can now hold his breath for more than 6 minutes as he dives into the deep. Dr. Ordonez, originally from Cartagena, Colombia, has had a love of the sea since a young boy. He is being trained by the former world champion in the sport, a Cuban Special Forces soldier. Some of the fish that Alvaro has speared appear below. As he says, “not bad for an 8-6 every day dentist”!

A Prestigious Honor for Dr. VillarealICD President Dr. Joseph Kenneally presented the prestigious Councilor’s Medallion Award of The International College of Dentists (ICD) to our Philippines representative Dr. Boy Villareal. All ICOI/ICD members congratulate “Boy” for having earned this honor.
