The survivor I Komang Giur,45, was fairly lucky because hewas at the farthest location fromthe avalanche of cliff hoard. Hewas crushed and buried under theavalanche of the material, but itwas not so severe. He succeededto go out from the pile of stonesand sand. In the hematoma andtottering condition, he attemptedto escape from the pile and thenlooked for help to local residentsto dig out three other victimswho were no other than his fam-ily.

Giur had to walk about 1 kmto the settlement of residents toinform about the disaster afflict-ing him and his family. Whenresidents came to evacuate thethree other buried victims, theyhad been found dead. The threevictims died horribly with he-matoma wound and broken bodyand bones.

The witness-victim Giur saidthat four of them left for the lo-cation of illegal sand mining atUntalan on last Sunday at around08:00 a.m. Local Time by bring-ing shovels and hoes. They ex-pected to get sand to be sold fortheir daily bread and butter. When they just dug around for anhour, unexpectedly the cliff ofmore than 10 meters high ava-

visited by devotees for Melasti pro-cession, purificatory rite and otherceremonial activities, but also by col-lectors of mosaic stone coming to thebeach every day. Even, the challeng-ing waves of the beach have attracteda dozen of foreign tourists who lovesurfing. They come from Sweden,Germany, Canada, Japan and severalother countries. Unfortunately, thereare no public facilities available yet.Similarly, condition of the beach isalso dirty, mainly due to plasticwaste. It kindles some complaints oftourists.

As the observation made on theWatu Klotok, Sunday (Feb 6), a num-ber of tourists looked to walk alongthe beach after enjoying the wavesby surfing. Four of them were Eric,40, and Christian, 40, from Sweden, while Matzo Gilla, 32, from Ger-many and Sara, 25, from Canada.“We have surfed for many times onthe Watu Klotok Beach,” admittedChristian. Eric had been living in Bali(Sanur) for three months. Accordingto him, he had tried surfing at somelocations in Bali such as Sanur, NusaDua and Kuta.

“The waves on the Watu KlotokBeach are no less challenging thanin other places I have visited,” hesaid. Even, according to him, WatuKlotok had its advantage if comparedto Sanur, Nusa Dua and Kuta. Otherthan having a temple (Watu KlotokTemple) with a beautiful view, thesurrounding nature also remainedpristine along with its agriculturalland.

Illegal sand mining activities in Karangasem killed more victims as buried dead by the ava-lanche of mining cliff in the region of Untalan Hamlet, Jungutan Village, Bebandem Subdistrict,Karangasem, Sunday (Feb 6) morning. Of the four miners, the three dead victims consisted of ahigh school student in Karangasem I Ketut Sudita, 17, I Ketut Landep, 43, Ni Komang Pasmi,50, and Kadek Sudita, 43.

lanched and befell the four ofthem. Admittedly, he did not thinkif the cliff would avalanche be-cause it looked quite strong. Ad-ditionally, it was sunny and didnot rain on that day.

However, the fate said differ-ently. Evacuation of the three bod-ies of victims was performed byhundreds of Untalan residents ledby I Wayan Santa, the hamletchief. It was also directly moni-tored by the Chief of KarangasemPolice, Ketut Onik Suirawan. Al-legedly, the incident was causedby negligence of the victims. Theydug illegally or without permis-sion at the former location of sandmining without reclamation or re-habilitation.

Formerly, the sand location wasexcavated by investors fromChina living in Denpasar namedA-Shian. In addition, the locationhad been abandoned by two inves-tors with the reason of losses.Meanwhile, the Hamlet ChiefWayan Santa said the avalanchewas alleged to be caused by un-stable condition of the cliff. Thesandy land was unstable, espe-cially in the rainy season. He saidit was indeed not raining then. But, the previous torrential rainflushed and caused the local landwet and heavy so that it was un-

stable or prone to landslides. Moreover, it kept on vibrating dueto the hit of hoes belonging tothose illegal sand miners. In themeantime, the bodies of three vic-tims were directly buried in thecemetery of Untalan customaryvillage on that afternoon.

Both licensed and illegal sandmining in Karangasem continuedto kill lives as buried by the ava-lanche of the excavation cliff. Noless than a dozen of miners hadbeen killed and injured. However, the miners were never deterrent toearn a livelihood for their survival.

As in the Karangasem territory, condition of the sand mining inBebandem was extremely deso-late. The sand mining site in op-eration or former excavation siteabandoned by previous investorswere then taken advantage tradi-tionally by illegal sand minersconsisting of local residents. Itactually harmed the surroundingenvironment. It then turned to acliff or gaping ravine and was dif-ficult to be planted as without landrehabilitation and prone to land-slides or flash floods. Addition-ally, the location of excavationwas the foot or slope of the MountAgung or the hills range denotingthe territory of rainwater catch-ment. (013)

However, according to Sara, theWatu Klotok Beach was dirty. A lotof plastic waste scattered every-where. Ideally, she said, the authori-ties should pay serious attention tothe matter. The Watu Klotok actuallywas very potential as an alternativeof surfing site for tourists. “It is sup-ported by sufficient parking lot. Then,it just needs a better arrangement. Most importantly, please do not dis-pose plastic waste as it seems the big-gest problem for Bali in general,” saidthe woman who had been in Bali fortwo years (settled in Ubud).

Meanwhile, Matzo also suggestedthe community to put a care. Teach-ing children to avoid littering, espe-cially into the river, at early age wasa good start. “Bali is a good islandinhabited by friendly community.Supposedly, littering behavior shouldbe eliminated. I often see people dis-posing their trash directly into theriver,” said Matzo. Additionally, thetoilets and changing rooms were notyet available, either. It was com-plained by tourists.

“Yes, there are tourists cominghere every day. They just enjoy thebeach or do surfing,” said a perma-nent trader in the parking area ofWatu Klotok Beach, Ni KetutSumariati. She also added there wereno changing rooms or toilets thatcould be functioned for the sake ofcomfort of tourists visiting the WatuKlotok. As a matter of fact, the bath-room had already existed but couldnot be functioned and the water wasnot available. (kmb20)

Gianyar (Bali Post)—Recently, natural disasters continue to

afflict the people all over Bali, particularlythe Gianyar Regency. A series of thosecatastrophic incidents get serious attentionfrom the Shiva-Buddha higher priests ofGianyar coalesced into the DharmaGhosana Gianyar. Some efforts to mini-mize the disasters begin to be prepared. One of them is through the implementa-tion of Bendu Piduka or purificatory ritualthat will be held by Ida Dang HyangDwijendra in Besakih Temple, Tuesday(Feb 8).

Significance of the ritual first held inBali, according to the Chief of DharmaGhosana Gianyar, Ida Pedanda WayahanBun, from Griya Sanur Pejeng,Tampaksiring, Gianyar, as well as theoriginator of the idea, was responding tothe rampant natural occurrences such asdiseases to human beings, epidemic to ani-mals and plant disease occurred recentlytouched his heart as a higher priest to pro-vide something for the salvation of theuniverse.

It referred to the story on the pilgrimageof Dang Hyang Dwijendra as a higher priestin which most of his devotion was intendedfor social activities. One of them was whenresolving the epidemic in Gading Wani Vil-lage hit by contagious disease. “I want theduty of a higher priest is not only officiat-ing ritual, but should also be poised withsocial services,” he said.

Her work placewas secured well even when she was goinghome they really give attention and com-pensated her trip.

She admitted to have liked working thereas it is very different from other countries shehas worked in such as Turkey for three yearsand Arab Saudi for 2 years. After 7 months inEgypt, she learnt a lot, firstly on the very in-teresting culture being visited by many re-searchers and historians. It is hard for her toleave yet with the unstable condition, shecouldn’t do anything but to go home. (120)

To minimize disasters

Purificatory ritual heldin Besakih Temple

In the next implementation, the BenduPiduka ritual participated by all Buddha-Shiva higher priests across Gianyar Re-gency would be held by saying sincereprayers to Supreme God in order He wouldbe pleased to cope with the natural disas-ters afflicting Bali incessantly. With thepower of sincere prayers, it would be ableto overcome all obstacles happening, headded.

Expectedly, the purificatory ritual couldbe followed by devotees throughout Bali,so that Bali could be completely kept awayfrom natural disasters. Especially, Gianyarwas admitted to have advantage comparedto other regions since the pre-historic, an-cient Bali and modern times.

Evidently, the pilgrimage of RishiMarkandeya, Dang Hyang Dwijendra andMpu Kuturan were always started fromGianyar. In addition, a number of SadKahyangan temples existed in Gianyar, in-cluding the Penataran Sasih and PuseringJagat Temple. “Hopefully, this trailblazingactivity can be used as an example through-out Bali,” he hoped.

Further, Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bunhoped that all higher priests should not onlyfocus on chairing rituals, but should alsobalance it with social activities, so the mean-ing of Loka Pala Sraya could be expanded, not only chairing rituals. By such activities, the role of higher priests would be discern-ible in providing and invoking for salvationfor the entire Island of Bali. (kmb)

Conference on Saturday. “If we areto defeat this threat, I believe it’stime to turn the page on the failedpolicies of the past,” he said.

His frank remarks came at atime when the issue of home-grown Islamic militancy is fresh inthe minds of many here, almosttwo months after a botched suicideattack in Stockholm by a man al-legedly radicalised in Britain. Theywere also sure to remind listenersin Britain of the attacks on theLondon transport network in 2005by four home-grown suicidebombers, which killed 52 people.

While the speech was swiftlycondemned by Muslim groups andopposition politicians, the furoremasked the fact that this is just thelatest problem Britain has facedwith integrating outsiders. Jewishimmigrants faced hostility for cen-turies and it was not until the late19th century that they enjoyedfreedom in every walk of life.

Now there are countless ex-amples of Jewish people at the high-est level in every profession in Brit-ain, such as leader of the main op-position Labour party Ed Miliband, the son of Jewish refugees.

JAKARTA - The government is predictedto reshuffle some of its ministers, HouseDeputy Speaker Priyo Budi Santoso saidhere Sunday.

“I learnt about it from friends of theDemocratic Party,” he said.

According to him, President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono was considering theministers‘ performance, so may have con-ducted a reshuffle of the cabinet.

In one year of the administration, headded, some of the ministers who did notshow good work and many did not see pro-grams some ministers had carried out.

“Frankly speaking, some ministers failedto show good performance in the past year,”he said. Priyo, one of Golkar Party‘s centralexecutive board heads, added, because of theproblem last year, President Yudhoyono hadto deal with the problems himself.

Furthermore, he said, it was thePresident‘s right to keep or discharge a min-ister. “Golkar Party noted that several min-isters had done their best, but it was mainlyfor the Head of State to decide. Let`s waitwhat the President will do,” he said.

“The attack on members of theAhmadiyah community that leftthree people dead is a violation oflaw and human rights, and thereforeit should be legally accounted forand thoroughly investigated,” theminister said here on Monday.

Patrialis said that in the imple-mentation of human rights in Indo-nesia, there were restrictions andconditions that should not be vio-lated but be respected by all parties.

“The human rights of every indi-vidual as stipulated in the article 28of 1945 Constitution should not beviolated,” Patrialis said, adding thatthat the implementation of humanrights in moral and religious values, public orders, and security shouldnot be violated.

Asked about the bloody attack onthe members of Ahmadiyah commu-nity in Padeglang on Sunday, thehuman rights minister said it wasbeyond his authority to comment onit any further.

“The government`s stance in re-lation to the attack on Ahmadiyahmembers will be officially conveyedby Religious Affairs MinisterSuradharma Ali,” Patrialis said.

JAKARTA – Indonesia’s gross domestic product grew 6.1 per-cent last year, officials said Monday as Southeast Asia’s biggesteconomy confirmed its position among the top ranks of emergingmarkets.

Central Statistics Agency chairman Rusman Heriawan told re-porters that the resource-rich country of 240 million people posted6.9 percent growth in the fourth quarter compared with 5.8 percent ayear earlier. The figures made it among the best performers in theGroup of 20 rich and developing countries.

The full-year growth figure compared with 4.5 percent in 2009and was in line with expectations, putting Indonesia on course toreach its target of 6.0-6.5 percent growth in 2011.

The country’s stock market saw a slight uptick on the data, withthe benchmark index 0.1 percent firmer at 3,499.613 at midday.

The market soared around 40 percent last year but has shed morethan five percent so far in 2011 due to concerns about rising infla-tion, on top of persistent infrastructure bottlenecks and endemic cor-ruption.

Heriawan said Indonesia could look forward to stronger growththis year, in line with the broader recovery of the global economyfrom the 2008-2009 financial crisis.

“If the global economic recovery continues, I’m pretty sure thatwe’ll be able to reach higher economic growth in 2011,” Heriawansaid.

The statistics agency said exports in the fourth quarter increased16.1 percent, a sign of the appetite for Indonesian resources fromChina and India.

Investment climbed 8.7 percent and government spending rose7.3 percent.

Indonesia posts 6.1% GDP growth in 2010Household consumption increased 4.4 percent, a key figure given

that some 60 percent of Indonesia’s gross domestic product is attrib-uted to domestic demand.

The government under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono lastyear announced a massive overhaul of the country’s decrepit infra-structure worth $140 billion to 2015, $90 billion of which has tocome from the private sector.

Standard Chartered Bank economist Fauzi Ikhsan said new andimproved ports, roads, bridges and railways were essential toIndonesia’s ambitions to become a regional economic powerhouse.

“The economic growth was supported by high commodities priceswhich raised the country’s export income. Foreign direct investmentand public consumption also helped the growth,” he told AFP.

“In the near future, the government should push infrastructuredevelopment as this is important to attract private investment.”

Indonesia needed to be rescued from bankruptcy a little over adecade ago when it was hit hard by the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, leading to the fall of autocratic strongman Suharto after 32years in power.

Since then it has won plaudits for rebuilding its foreign currencyreserves, restoring confidence to its banking system and managingthe macroeconomic levers of the economy with a steady hand.

It recently won upgrades from Fitch and Moody’s ratings agen-cies, lifting its sovereign debt to one below investment grade.

But with interest rates rising this month for the first time since2008 in the face of inflation above seven percent, analysts warn theeconomy is still vulnerable.

Sharp outflows of speculative foreign capital, which poured intothe country last year, pose another threat to stability, along with op-position to further economic reform from politically entrenchedvested interests, they say.

SEMARANG/JAKARTA - Law and Human Rights MinisterPatrialis Akbar said Sunday‘s bloody attack on Ahmadiyan membersin Pandeglang, Banten Province, should be legally accounted for.

donesia, killing three and woundingsix others, police and witnesses said.

Local police Chief Lt. Col. AlexFauzy Rasyad said about 1,500people — many with machetes, sticks and rocks — attacked about 20members of the Ahmadiyah Muslimsect who were visiting their leaderin his house in Banten province onIndonesia’s main island of Java.

He said the crowd demanded thatthe sect members stop their activi-ties, but the request was rejected. Asa result, the crowd stabbed to deathat least three men, destroyed thehouse and set fire to their cars andmotorbikes.

Six others were hospitalized, fourwith critical injuries.

The police were called, “but theattackers came faster,” Rasyad said.

The attack was the latest target-ing the Ahmadiyah sect in Indone-sia, the world’s most populous Mus-lim nation. Many Muslims see fol-lowers of Ahmadiyah as holdingheretical beliefs.

Indonesia is a secular country witha long history of religious tolerance. But in recent years a hard-line fringehas grown louder and the government— which relies on the support of Is-lamic parties in Parliament — hasbeen accused of caving in to it.

The Islamic Defenders Frontpressured local authorities late lastyear to shutter a Christian churchlocated in a densely populated Mus-lim area, and assailants stabbedChristian worshipper and beat a min-ister in the head with a wooden plankas they headed to prayers.

The Setara Institute for Peace andDemocracy, a human rights group, says attacks on religious freedom byhard-liners are steadily increasing.

It says in 2010 there were 64 in-cidents, ranging from physical abuseto preventing groups from perform-ing prayers and burning houses of

worship, up from 18 in 2009 and 17in 2008.

Ahmadiyah, believed to have200,000 followers in Indonesia, is con-sidered deviant by most Muslims andbanned in many Islamic countries be-cause of its belief that Muhammad wasnot the final prophet.

Klepon:Sweet and Colorful Ball Cakes

Inspired by the back-to-nature movement and

consumption safety, people are encouraged to

prepare a nice-looking and safe cake. It is

implemented as in the making of klepon cake. This is

one of the favorite cakes for Balinese people. In their

tradition, when a family organizes a wedding

ceremony, it will invite customary villagers to come

and bring along with any kind of fresh cake.

By doing so, the family will be unnecessary to make

abundant cakes. On the contrary, when others

organize the same ceremony, the family will do so. In

short, it is the tradition of mutual assistance in the

form of cakes procurement. Aside from such socio-

religious need, this klepon is also good for

accompaniment of drinking coffee or tea or even as

single refreshment.

To make this klepon ball cake is required the

ingredients as follows: 500g white sticky rice flour, 1

cup of palm sugar (sliced thinly for sauce), ½ tsp salt,

a glass of warm water, 1 cup of grated coconut. For

nice natural color, simply use the ½ cup of extract of

suji leaf or dracaena (green) and 100 gram of purple

sweet potato paste.

First of all, steam the flour until half-done and take

out. Gradually mix it with water and add the respective

coloring agent so that results in two kinds of batter.

Take a small portion of the batter and make small

balls with a size of around the quail egg. Do this until

the batter runs out. Then, put sliced palm sugar inside

the balls and close the hole by kneading the batter.

Later, prepare boiling water by pan and put all balls

into the water. When the balls have looked to float,

take them out. Serve them on plate and sprinkle with

grated coconut. (BTN/punia)

According to Juniadi, construc-tion of the international airportneeded a prior specific in-depthstudy. The study itself did not onlyexamine the economic and agricul-tural impact, but also did it in termsof geological, physical, biological, sociological, economic and culturalaspect.

It was explained that Bulelengwas very appropriate for the devel-opment of international airportsince the land required for theproject reached around 1,000 hect-

ares and Buleleng had about 43,000hectares of dry land or unproduc-tive land for agriculture. Therefore,it was worth using for developmentsector at large.

According to him, the interna-tional airport development wouldinevitably lead to negative risks. However, it was estimated to havea greater positive impact. One ofthem was opening market opportu-nities for local products such as thatof agriculture, small and medium in-dustries, marine and others. “On thataccount, the society should not thinka priori against the risks that mayoccur. Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa speaks during a press conference in Tokyo on Feb-ruary 7, 2011. Japan’s central bank chief pressed the government to speed up fiscal reforms toease the industrialised world’s largest debt, after ratings agency Standard & Poor’s cut Japan’scredit rating.

Japan needs to raise its growth po-tential and improve its fiscal health,Bank of Japan Gov. MasaakiShirakawa said Monday at the ForeignCorrespondents’ Club of Japan.

He called on the government to cutexpenditure and boost revenue becauseinflation alone cannot solve budgetproblems. While higher prices couldmean more tax revenue, it could alsolead to higher costs for social securityand public works. Japan is currently ex-periencing persistently falling pricesknown as deflation, but prices are ex-pected to start rising again in the nextfiscal year starting April.

“The country cannot continue to rundeficits forever,” Shirakawa said.“Therefore, society needs a crediblecommitment to fiscal reform.”

His comments come less than twoweeks after Standard & Poor’s cutJapan’s credit rating for the first timein almost nine years. The move re-minded the world of the country’s bal-looning debt, now twice the size ofgross domestic product, and high-lighted questions about Prime Minis-ter Naoto Kan’s ability to stem fiscal

WASHINGTON – Mega-banks will have to pay more forU.S. deposit insurance under anew regulation set for final ap-proval on Monday as the gov-ernment advances a boatload offinancial oversight changes.

Other measures to be consid-ered this week include curbingbonus plans at banks that en-courage too much risk-taking,and limiting the role of much-maligned credit ratings.

A congressional committeewill also weigh the fundingneeds of the Commodity Fu-tures Trading Commission.

The White House was alsoexpected to release next weekproposals for fixing the hous-ing finance system and the gov-ernment-sponsored companiesat its heart, Fannie Mae andFreddie Mac.

On Monday, the Federal De-posit Insurance Corp was ex-pected to approve a rule man-dated by the Dodd-Frank re-forms, enacted in July after the2007-2009 financial crisis thatled to huge taxpayer bailouts ofthe nation’s largest financialfirms.

Bank of America, JPMorganChase and Citigroup combinedwould have to pay about $1 bil-lion more per year under thenew, liabilities-based FDIC in-surance fund assessment for-mula, according to industry es-timates.

Approval of the rule wouldshift some of the burden formaintaining the FDIC’s depositinsurance fund off of smallerbanks, which mostly rode outthe crisis unscathed, and ontolarge institutions that receivedmassive government aid.

Community banks lobbiedfor the change, arguing largebanks pose more risk to the fi-nancial system and so shouldcontribute more to the fund. The Independent CommunityBankers Association estimatedthe change would save bankswith less than $10 billion inassets about $4.5 billion overthree years.

TOKYO – The head of Japan’s central bank said the country lacks a sense of urgency to tacklethe reforms needed to improve government finances that are in “very bad shape.”

deterioration.Kan has proposed a record 92.4 tril-

lion yen ($1.1 trillion) budget for thenext fiscal year starting April 1. Hecame under fire for his initial responseto the S&P downgrade, which sug-gested that he did not understand whatthe move meant.

Shirakawa declined to comment onKan’s words. But he blamed thecountry’s general complacency on thefact that right now, Japan overall standson relatively sound financial footing.

Japanese companies are still profit-able, and long-term interest rates arenot rising, he said. The yen, a key in-ternational currency, has not depreci-ated, and the country has not seen anycapital flight.

Recent signs suggest Japan isemerging from a temporary “pause”and performing at par with other ad-vanced economies, Shirakawa said.

The country, however, faces loom-ing issues that weigh on its future, suchas a rapidly aging population, lacklus-ter productivity and growing publicdebt. Japanese society, he said, is “los-ing a healthy sense of optimism.”

“Just as excessive optimism can gen-erate an asset bubble, excessive pessi-mism can depress the economy,”Shirakawa said. “What is necessary is astrong will for reform and overcomingexcessive pessimism.”

The Bank of Japan deserves morerecognition for its own efforts to supportJapan’s economy, he said.

Under a “comprehensive monetaryeasing” policy, the central bank in Octo-ber lowered its key interest rate to virtu-ally zero percent and pledges to main-tain the level until prices start risingagain. It also unveiled a temporary 5 tril-lion yen ($61 billion) fund to buy finan-cial assets such as government securi-ties, commercial paper and corporatebonds to help lift the economy and re-verse deflation.

Shirakawa said the central bank couldexpand the operation if the economy“deviates materially” from its projec-tions. The central bank expects Japan’seconomy to return to growth that is mod-erately in tandem with an expanding glo-bal economy. It expects real GDP to ex-pand 3.3 percent this fiscal year throughMarch.

take effect on April 1, hittingthe big banks’ second-quarterresults.

Citigroup Chief FinancialOfficer John Gerspach told ana-lysts last month that the FDICassessment change was shapingup as the single largest impactfrom Dodd-Frank on the bank.

Dodd-Frank also called forbanning incentive-based payplans at banks that promote ex-cessive risk-taking by execu-tives. The FDIC will considera proposal on the rule, whichcould force some firms to de-fer some executives’ pay.

The proposed rule will re-quire executives at the largestfinancial institutions to havehalf of their bonuses deferredfor at least three years, accord-ing to two people familiar withproposal.

The proposal applies to topexecutives at financial compa-nies with $50 billion or more inassets such as Bank of AmericaCorp, JPMorgan Chase & Co,Goldman Sachs Group Inc andMorgan Stanley.

On Wednesday, the Securi-ties and Exchange Commissionis slated to take up a Dodd-Frank provision with major im-pact for the Big Three creditrating agencies — Moody’sCorp, Standard & Poor’s andFitch Ratings.

The legislation called forfederal agencies to sharply re-duce their reliance on credit rat-ings, widely seen as flawed inthe run-up to the financial cri-sis . The SEC will discusswhether to propose a rule alongthese lines.

The U.S. House of Represen-tatives Agriculture Committeewill hold a hearing on Thursdayon funding for the CFTC, whichmust implement dozens of newDodd-Frank regulations andneeds more staff and resourcesto handle the job.

Some House Republicanswant to restrain spending at theSEC and the CFTC, partly tocombat the federal budget defi-cit and partly to undermine theDodd-Frank reforms that wereopposed last year by most Re-publicans.

The Black Eyed Peas featuringFergie, will.i.am, Taboo andapl.de.ap lower down to the stageto perform during halftime of theNFL football Super Bowl XLV Sun-day, Feb. 6, 2011, in Arlington, Texas.

The Black Eyed Peasunderwhelm Super Bowl halftime

global superstars. But in the mas-sive Cowboys Arena, the groupappeared to be as stiff as frontmanwill.i.am’s plastic hair hat.

It started out with a wow fac-tor: will.i.am, Taboo, Fergie andapl.de.ap descended from atopthe stadium, outfits glittering, be-dazzled outfits, singing (with thehelp of auto-tune) the party an-them “I Gotta Feeling” with hun-dreds of dancers grooving in stepon the field.

But the Peas didn’t match theenergy of the song; they seemedtentative, and tense. It didn’t helpthat Fergie’s mic didn’t kick inuntil she was midway throughher first verse.

If the explanation for thePeas’ flatness was nerves, thosenerves never settled, as theyplodded through such songs as“Pump It” and “Boom BoomPow.” Technically, they were fine— Fergie’s voice soared, the rapswere performed right. Theydidn’t excite. Even former Guns`N Roses guitarist Slash seemedbored as he joined Fergie for ashort snippet of “Sweet Child O’Mine,” an unnecessary cameothat failed to add any sizzle tothe set.

So it fell to Usher to breathesome life into the halftime show, and he didn’t disappoint as he ap-peared in all white with a flankof dancers. Although Usherseemed to dance more of his No.1 hit “OMG” with will.i.am thansing it, his syncopated moves andflips provided the energy jolt thatthe Peas lacked.

WITH the main architecture ofthe 2011 M1 becoming clearer afterthe first Sepang MotoGP test, newFactory Yamaha rider Ben Spies isaiming to push for fast times whenhe returns to Malaysia at the end ofthe month. That might give the im-pression that the former WorldSuperbike champion was well off thepace this week, but in fact he finishedthe three-day test in fifth place, just0.245sec from the best lap byHonda’s Marco Simoncelli!

“The test went really well,” saidSpies. “It’s been the first time work-ing with my full team - some guysweren’t here at Valencia - and it’sbeen good.

“I have a new data guy, who Iworked with in the past. He is bril-liant. The majority of changes theymade to the bike were exactly whatI was asking for. I didn’t need 3-4lap runs. I’d just go out and itworked straight away.”

In terms of technical develop-ments, the main aim for Spies wasto evaluate the two engine optionsprovided by Yamaha. “This test wasbasically to decide which engine togo with and to work with the elec-tronics,” he said. “We had two dif-ferent engine configurations tochose from and go in that direction

Ben Spies: Lap time, next timefor the rest of the year. Me and Jorge[Lorenzo] came to the same conclu-sion on that, which Yamaha willwork further on now.

“Then basically we worked onsome different chassis settings andthe electronics - making fuel con-sumption better for the race, whilestill going fast. We came up with areally good solution. “Now we havea very good base and when we comeback here [for the second test] it willbe the first, for us, ‘real’ test wherewe have to start getting with it andmake sure the speed is there.

“That’s when we’ll look to changethe bike - geometry wise, handlingwise - to get a lap time out of it andmake it faster. But this test we reallydidn’t focus on that. “It’s been suc-cessful. I had a small mishap [crash]on the first day, but came good andI’m happy with everything.

“We didn’t blaze the lap times, but we’re right there where we needto be.” Spies took two podiums andone pole position on his way tosixth, and top rookie, in the 2010MotoGP World Championship forTech 3 Yamaha.
