MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s government is appealing formore help in its fight against powerful militants who have recently in-tensified their attacks.

President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed said Monday it was unrealisticto expect the forces of an ill-equipped government to battle the al-Qaida-linked group al-Shabab.

Ahmed compared al-Shabab’s attack on a Mogadishu hotel that killedmore than 30 people last week to the violence against governments inIraq, Yemen and Afghanistan.

He said the world must give Somalia’s violence the same priorityaccorded to al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which Washington con-siders to be a major threat. Al-Shabab carried out twin bombings inUganda during the World Cup final, killing 76 people.

This was conveyed by DenpasarMayor I.B. Rai DharmawijayaMantra in the midst of turtlehatchling release in front of the PuriSantrian Hotel, Sanur, last Sunday(Aug 29). Mayor Rai Mantra as-sessed if it was only handled byhumans, it would not cover the en-tire area. “Hopefully, DKP couldprovide beach cleaner to amass therubbish carried away by water cur-rents,” the mayor told the Head ofDKP Denpasar, I Ketut Wisada.

Not only that, the mayor also ex-pected to perform a general clean-ing at least once a month to keep theSanur Beach clean all the times. Theaction was very important to inspireall people so they cared about envi-ronmental sanitation. Moreover,

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Members of the Badung House

asked the government to facilitatethe provision of parking lot andensure the availability of shuttle busin the area of Jalan Legian and itssurroundings. This would be fol-lowed up by the re-arrangement ofJalan Legian becoming the worldclass infrastructure.

Head of Commission B ofBadung House, Putu Parwata, lastSunday (Aug 29), said that one ofthe constraints of the re-arrange-ment for Jalan Legian was the park-ing problem. If complete re-ar-rangement of the road was under-taken, there would be traffic diver-sion and it would slightly hamperthe economic growth in the localarea.

In the future, if Jalan Legianwould have been well ordered, there should be no more parkingproblems using the road body. “If

One of the tourist destinations owned by the Denpasar is Sanur Beach. The existence of thiswhite sandy beach was categorized into a quite favorite tourist attraction among foreign and do-mestic tourists. Therefore, sanitation of the coastal area stretching in the east of Sanur Villageshould be given special attention. To maintain the sanitation of the beach, Denpasar Sanitation andLandscaping Services (DKP) was asked to use beach cleaner to clean off the rubbish in the area.

tourism businesspeople made thebeach as an invaluable asset to attracttourists. “Please also be scheduled ageneral cleaning, at least once amonth,” the mayor Rai Mantra re-quested.

In response to such request,Wisada confessed to have preparedbeach cleaners especially used on thebeach for collecting trashes on thesand. In the near future, the beachcleaners could be distributed, so thatit could be used on the beach. “Wehave designed a beach cleaner thatcan help expedite the handling of gar-bage on the coastal area,” said Wisadalast Sunday.

In the meantime, the mayor con-sidered the environmental issues, in-cluding the waste had to obtain spe-

cial attention. Moreover, Sanur areabecoming a tourist attraction shouldgive priority to the caring attitude to-wards the environment. Not only gov-ernment that should be active, allcomponents had to get involved in theefforts to preserve the environment.

It was said, Denpasar having asmall region remained to be hauntedby environmental problem. For ex-ample, it encountered the problems ofwaste, garbage and other environmen-tal issues requiring serious attentionbecause the achievement of the devel-opment could not be seen from physi-cal aspect only. “Please do no let thisenvironmental preservation be ne-glected, just because of physical de-velopment,” said the number one manin Denpasar last Sunday. As for plan of Jalan Legian repair,Government should provide parking lot

the road has been planned in goodconcept it will create a beautiful en-vironment and landscape. As conse-quence, it will also make touristscomfortable. However, this can onlyhappen provided that the parkingservice has been well regulated andparking lot along the way is not al-lowed,” he said.

For that purpose, the governmentshould facilitate the provision ofparking lot for Kuta and Legian area.Badung Regency Governmentshould be able to release the land andbuild a multilevel parking lot aroundLegian. Meanwhile, the entrepre-neurs having no parking spacesshould be obliged to take advantageof the parking spaces determined. Meanwhile, another member ofCommission B, Wayan PuspaNegara, revealed that endeavor tobeautify Jalan Legian had actuallybeen pioneered a long time ago.Studies on the restructuring of JalanLegian had even been made since1997. Currently, the blue print ofJalan Legian had been prepared.“Model of beautification drawing ofJalan Legian has existed. So, we arejust waiting for the implementation,”said I Wayan Puspa Negara.

According to Puspa, breakthroughof Jalan Legian re-arrangementshould not be delayed because it wasworried that conditions of the exist-ing roads would be quite chaotic, bothin terms of infrastructure and aware-ness of road users. Hence, it neededre-arranging completely. (ded)

Denpasar (Bali Post)—The data show that tourism sector

can give contribution to the creation ofjob opportunities amounting to 7 per-cent in Indonesia. Regions having de-veloped tourism indicate that welfareof the people is more likely to increaseif compared to regions of less devel-oped tourism. If poverty is still encoun-tered in tourism regions, never blamethe tourism sector. Additionally, it isnot necessarily to leave tourism. Tomake tourism more beneficial for lo-cal communities, we need to increasethe empowerment process on the qual-ity of human resources and provideopportunities for people to work in thissector—of course should be armedwith adequate skills. Thus, social wel-fare can be increased.

These tips were conveyed by theHead of Human Resources Develop-ment Agency, Ministry of Culture andTourism of the RI, Prof. Dr. I GdePitana in the national seminar entitled‘Tourism and Poverty Eradication’ inUdayana University, last Saturday(Aug 28). The seminar was organizedby Faculty of Tourism, Udayana Uni-versity in cooperation with the Minis-try of Culture and Tourism to celebratethe 48th Dies Natalis of Udayana Uni-versity. Tourists rise, poverty declinesIn his paper denoting the essence of

the book on pro-people tourism, DarmaPutra submitted the data of ten years, namely 1999-2009. They clearlyshowed that tourist arrival and povertyrates were positively correlated.

“If the number of tourist visit goesup, poverty rates will decline,” saidDarma Putra. To strengthen his argu-ment, he showed the data of foreigntourists and the poverty rates nation-ally, and two of the regions respectivelythe North Sumatra and Bali.

In 1999, the number of foreign tour-ist visits to Indonesia was 4.7 millionand poverty rate was 47.49 million.Meanwhile, in 2009, foreign touristarrivals increased to 6.4 million, whilethe poverty rate decreased to 32.53million.

Similarly, said Darma, comparablecondition happened to Bali, too. In1999, the number of foreign tourist was1.3 million and the poverty rate was257,800 people, while in 2009, thenumber of foreign tourists reached to2.2 million, while the poverty rate de-creased to 181,700 people.

“When the visit of foreign touristsdecreased due to terrorist attacks, thenumber of poverty in Bali rose,” saidDarma, co-author the book entitledTourism, Development and Terrorismin Bali (Ashgate, 2007).

However, Darma immediately re-

minded that it was naive if the declinein poverty was said to have been en-tirely caused by tourism industry, at thesame it was also wrong to ignore thecontribution of tourism to poverty re-duction. “Nationally, tourism could cre-ate job opportunities for about 6.5 mil-lion. It meant that such amount of resi-dents could escape from (extreme) pov-erty,” Darma said.

Darma acknowledged that statisti-cal data issued by the Central Bureauof Statistics and other governmentsources were often considered to beabstract and did not accurately reflectthe reality.

In his presentation, he gave concreteexamples namely the child creativityof a young hawker who sold kites atTanah Lot tourist destination. Within aday, the vendor could sell 10-15 kites, costing at an average of IDR 50 thou-sand. About half (IDR 25 thousand) ofthem was profits. Within a month, to-tal revenues obtained by the kite ven-dor approximately reached IDR 7.5million.

Everyone needs to actively and cre-atively take advantage of the opportu-nities in tourism.

“If several tourists come, but peopleare lazy, not creative and always feelpoor, the growth of tourism will be invain or incapable of reducing or eradi-cate the poverty,” said Darma.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Orga-nizing Committee, I MadeKusumanegara, said that other thanbeing capable of improving the qual-ity of the community, tourism was alsofeared to impoverish the local commu-nities. On that account, it was requireda commitment, seriousness, social re-sponsibility and high moral to developthe tourism in order to improve thequality of community’s life. “Thisseminar turns important in the effortsto produce a variety of thoughts on tour-ism development and poverty eradica-tion,” he said. YANGON, Myanmar – Politi-cal parties challenging Myanmar’sruling junta in the country’s firstelection in two decades said theycan’t afford to compete in everyconstituency because of the exor-bitant fees charged to register can-didates.

All candidates contesting theNov. 7 elections are required topay the Election Commission a feeof 500,000 kyat ($500) by Mon-day — a staggering sum in a coun-try where the averageschoolteacher’s monthly salary is$70.

The junta is portraying the elec-tions as a key step in shifting tocivilian rule after five decades ofmilitary domination, but criticscall them a sham and say the mili-tary shows little sign of relinquish-ing control. Kim was reportedly accompaniedby his son, Kim Jong Un, believed tobe in his 20s. Many North Korea watch-ers predict the son will be appointed toa key party position at a ruling Work-ers’ Party meeting early next month —the first such gathering in decades —as part of a succession process.

To pull off the event with sufficientfanfare, North Korea will need Chineseaid, particularly following the devas-tating floods that battered the country’snorthwest this month, analysts said.

KABUL, Afghanistan – President Hamid Karzai renewed his criti-cism of coalition strategy in fighting Afghanistan’s stubborn insur-gency, saying it has thus far produced nothing but civilian deaths.

Palawan’s bodyguards werewounded in the attack.

Palawan’s district of Lal Pur lieson the mountainous border with Pa-kistan overlooking infiltration routesfor Arab and other foreign fighterslinked to al-Qaida and aided by Pa-kistani militants.

Karzai’s sharp comments deliv-ered Sunday fit a pattern of greateroutspokenness by the Afghan leaderas he appeals for support among thebeleaguered Afghan public.

In a meeting with visiting Ger-man Parliament speaker NorbertLammert, Karzai said there was a“serious need” to alter strategyagainst the Taliban and other groupslinked to al-Qaida, the presidential

office said.“There should be a review of the

strategy in the fight against terror-ism, because the experience of thelast eight years showed that the fightin the villages of Afghanistan hasbeen ineffective apart from causingcivilian casualties,” Karzai wasquoted as saying.

Karzai’s statements come at atime when the Obama administra-tion is ratcheting up pressure onthe Afghan leader to do more tostamp out corruption. The Afghangovernment maintains that theU.S. should instead focus more onother fronts, including pressuringPakistan to shut down insurgentsanctuaries.

Last week, Karzai also criticizedthe U.S. plan to begin withdrawingtroops starting next July and said thewar on terror cannot succeed as longas the Taliban and their allies main-tain safe havens in Pakistan.

The kidnapping comes just amonth after another Russian helicop-ter pilot was abducted by janjaweedmilitiamen in Darfur after hishelicpter was forced to land. The pi-lot, who also worked for the jointU.N.-African Union peacekeepers, was eventually recovered.

In its account of Sunday’s kidnap-ping, the Sudanese daily al-Sahafa saidthree pilots were kidnapped as they leftthe Nyala airport heading for down-town.

Darfur has been in turmoil sinceFebruary 2003, when ethnic Africanrebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Sudanese government inKhartoum, claiming discriminationand neglect.

The Indonesian workers in Ma-laysia are not always treated hu-manely. Instead, some have report-edly been treated badly, not paid, and even become victims of humantrafficking.

The Indonesian Migrant WorkersUnion (SBMI) - East Java chapter, reported recently 18,641 Indone-sians had become victims of humantrafficking last year.

“Almost every day, our migrantworkers have become victim of hu-man traffickers due to the East Javaprovincial government’s weakmonitoring,” SBMI-East Javachapter’s Chairman MohammadCholily said.

East Java was noted as the big-gest sender of migrant workers toother countries, including Malaysia.

More than 18 thousands of those

workers became victim of humantraffickers as a result of the work-ers’ poor knowledge about overseasjob placement procedures.

The victims of this human traf-ficking ring were usually equippedwith fake documents so that theSBMI activists got difficulties inhandling their cases, he said.

In July, a human trafficking casewith five Balinese students as thevictims had been disclosed to thepublic. Before their return to Bali onMonday, the girls were forced towork at an electric company in theMalaysian city of Penang since theirarrival in April with low wages.

According to the IndonesianEmbassy’s Labor Attache AgusTrianto, the students were indeedvictims of human trafficking activi-ties. They arrived in Malaysia lastApril under a working contract be-tween their school and a local em-ployment recruiting official, namedSamuel. They were promised intern-ship at five-star hotels.

Instead of being placed at thepromised five-star hotels, they werebrought to Penang from KualaLumpur to be employed at an elec-tronic factory there, he said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ringof Fire”, where the meeting of conti-nental plates causes high volcanic andseismic activity. It has more active vol-canoes than any other country.

People reading Balinese manu-scripts known as lontar occasionallyfind slight difficulties especially in thematter of lexicons. This happens be-cause the manuscripts often use syn-onyms and they do not belong to com-mon words. Nevertheless, such diffi-culty may not become a hindrance tolearn the ancient heritages being richin knowledge.

There is always a solution to resolvethe problem. As other languages, Ba-linese language also has thesaurusknown as Dasa Nama. One of thebooks carrying about it is a simple 67-page book written by I Made Gambarwho deeply involves in Balinese an-cient manuscripts. Based on lexiconsobtained from several lontars he suc-cessfully classified the field into sixcategories such as name of birds, nameof trees, things or animals, homograph,Old Javanese and ingredients of ritual.

As a matter of fact, the book re-sembles to a thesaurus, though not ar-ranged alphabetically. It is a Balinese-Balinese word equivalence that doesnot give the meaning with explanation.Uniquely, it tends to provide equiva-lent meaning belonging to uncommonvocabularies usually found in vernacu-lar language.

For readers who would like to learnmore about Balinese herbal, this the-saurus will be very helpful. In addi-tion, it can enrich the Balinese vocabu-lary. For instance, in Balinese herbalmanuscript, there is a word lenge (redrice). It is not common to daily Ba-linese language that usually uses baasbarak. Secondly, equivalences of hi-biscus (pucuk—common word) arewirakusuma, landa para, sumara, jakusuma, tundapala, raktajuma, warangbang, waribang, wangewarih

homograph. For example, the wordantara can have English equivalenceto the words (1) leak, (2) good, (3)smart, (4) sky, (5) soul, and (6) inter-mediate. The word antara is oftenfound used as word formation in mak-ing Balinese individual names likeBudiantara and Sujaantara.

Hopefully, this book could helpyoung generation or whoever wishingto learn more about Balinese ancientmanuscripts. They actually cover manyaspects of life ranging from herbal heal-ing (Taru Pramana, Rukmini Tattwaetc.), architecture (Asta Kosala Kosali),agriculture (Shri Tattwa/DarmaningPemaculan), astrology (Wariga

SINGAPORE - Singapore onMonday announced fresh anti-specu-lation measures to cool its private prop-erty market as the city-state’s double-digit economic growth keeps upwardpressure on demand.

Owners who sell houses and apart-ments less than three years after buy-ing them will have to pay a duty of threepercent of the resale value — a mea-sure previously applicable to transac-tions within one year of the purchase.

For buyers with at least one out-standing loan, the minimum cash downpayment was raised from five to 10percent of valuation, while the maxi-mum amount a bank can lend wascapped at 70 percent, down from 80percent.

The balance of the purchase pricecan be taken from pension savings.

The measures, which take immedi-ate effect, are designed to discourage“flipping” — buying properties on easycredit with low cash down payments, and then reselling them quickly forprofit.

They were announced as a tradi-tional lull in the property market in Au-gust was about to come to an end.

“The government’s objective is toensure a stable and sustainable prop-erty market where prices move in linewith economic fundamentals,” said ajoint statement from the central bankand ministries of finance and nationaldevelopment.

Properties in land-scarce Singaporeare now among the most expensive inAsia, boosted in large part by the build-ing of two massive casino complexes

The package will be financed byreserve funds, Prime Minister NaotoKan said, but he added that the gov-ernment would consider compiling anadditional budget if necessary.

“We decided on the basic plan (ofthe stimulus) comprising employment, investment, education” and regulatoryreform, Kan said.

The package would be given finalapproval on September 10, he said, before being implemented later thatmonth.

The announcement followed theBank of Japan’s move on Monday toextend a multi-billion-dollar loanprogramme in a bid to curb the strengthof the yen, but the currency movedhigher, with markets unimpressed.

The decision came after an emer-gency meeting called in response tostrong pressure from officials to curbthe yen’s rise and support an economymired in deflation, after the unit hit a15-year high against the dollar lastweek.

Fears for the health of the globaleconomy have increased in recentweeks, and US Federal Reserve chiefBen Bernanke on Friday vowed to actif “unexpected developments” furtherthreaten the shaky US recovery.

WASHINGTON - PresidentBarack Obama said Sunday hewants to “keep on pushing” theeconomy to keep a fragile recoveryon track but also pay more attentionto getting debt and deficits undercontrol.

In an interview with NBC News,Obama said the sluggish economycombined with heavy debt will force“some very tough decisions” for hisadministration.

“We’re going to be have to do twothings at once. We’ve got to keep onpushing to grow the economy. Butwe’ve also on the medium term andthe long term have to get control ofour deficit,” Obama said.

“And it would be ideal where wedidn’t have to worry about one andcould just focus on the other. But,you know, this generation, it’s fallen

TOKYO - Japan on Monday announced plans for a stimulus package worth around 920 billionyen (11 billion dollars) as it looks to safeguard a fragile recovery and curb the impact of a strong yen.

one day for the hastily convened gath-ering.

In its second loan expansion sinceMarch, the bank said it would offer 10trillion yen (118 billion dollars) in six-month low interest loans in addition to20 trillion yen from December’s three-month loan scheme.

Domestic financial institutions willtherefore be able to borrow a total of30 trillion yen from the central bankfor maximum of six months againstpooled collateral, at the rate of 0.1 per-cent.

The move would help lower inter-est rates in the market place with a viewto easing the yen’s strength, said thebank, which left its key rate unchangedat 0.1 percent.

With the government due to outlinea new stimulus package on Tuesday,“the bank believes that the monetaryeasing measure, together with thegovernment’s efforts, will be effectivein further ensuring Japan’s economicrecovery.”

However, markets took a dim viewof the widely expected steps, with theyen strengthening to below 85 againstthe dollar and the Nikkei index paringback earlier three percent gains to closeup 1.76 percent.

The economic impact of the deci-sion will be “close to zero,” MacquarieBank economist Richard Jerram told

Dow Jones Newswires. “It’s largely acharade.”

“Investors had completely factored inthe announced steps”, said RuiXue Xu,rates strategist at RBS Securities Japan.

Shirakawa said that Monday’semergency meeting was held because“weak US economic indicators havecontinued, which led to the yen’sstrength and falls in share prices.”

However, analysts say the BoJ,which has kept rates at 0.1 percentsince the height of the financial cri-sis, has little room for manoeuvre.

Japan has long relied on its exportsector for economic growth, but thestrong yen poses a threat to the over-seas profits.

The country remains under pres-sure to safeguard its fragile recovery, with weak gross domestic productgrowth of an annualised 0.4 percentin the second quarter pointing to aslowdown.

And dreary consumer price dataFriday cast a darker shadow over thegovernment’s goal of ending deflationin the fiscal year starting April 2011.

Core consumer prices eased 1.1percent in July, the 17th consecutivemonthly fall.

Persistent deflation prompts con-sumers to defer purchases in the hopeof further price falls and deters cor-porate capital spending.

on our shoulders to make some verytough decisions.”

His comments came days afterofficial figures showed US economicgrowth slowed to a pace of 1.6 per-cent in the second quarter, suggest-ing the recovery was sputtering.

“We anticipated that the recoverywas slowing,” Obama said.

“The economy is still growing, but it’s not growing as fast as it needsto. I’ve got things right now in —before Congress that we shouldmove immediately... We should bepassing legislation that helps smallbusinesses get credit that eliminatescapital gains taxes so that they havemore incentive to invest right now.”

The president said there are “awhole host of measures we couldtake, no single element of which isa magic bullet but cumulatively canstart continuing to build momentumfor the recovery.”

that opened this year.A typical three-bedroom suburban

apartment of around 100 square metres(1,076 square feet) that will be readyfor occupancy in only two or three yearsnow costs at least a million US dollars.

Latest available government datashowed property prices rose 5.3 per-cent quarter-on-quarter in the April-June period, albeit slower than the 5.6percent jump in the March quarter.

Even during the recession lastyear, private property prices rose 1.8percent despite government measuresto dampen the market.

Analysts expect the property mar-ket to stay strong in light of theeconomy’s projected expansion of13-15 percent for 2010, which wouldmake Singapore the world’s fastestgrowing major economy this year.

The credit environment, withlending rates on home loans belowone percent in some cases, is anotherfactor boosting buyer sentiment.

The government said the latest an-nouncement was necessary to averta potential property meltdown shouldthe global economic recovery stall, which would have an impact onSingapore’s trade-dependenteconomy.

If growth falters and the marketcorrects, “Property buyers could facecapital losses, with implications ontheir own finances and the economyas a whole,” the government said.

Chua Yang Liang, head of re-gional research with Jones LangLaSalle, expects property prices torise two to three percent on a quar-terly basis with the introduction ofthe new measures.

The hit videogame made head-lines when a 27-year-old Japaneseman known only as “Sal 9000”staged a tuxedo wedding late lastyear, which was watched by thou-sands online, with his favourite car-toon girl, Nene Anegasaki.

But in the latest edition, game mak-ers have gone a step further and teamedup with the very real city of Atami, anonsen or hot spring town 100 kilometres(60 miles) southwest of the Japanesecapital. They have selected 13 roman-tic locations which can be overlaid withimages of Rinko or her teenage friendsManaka and Nene, who have allswapped their usual sailor-style schooluniforms for casual summer wear.

The secret is that the dating gamegoes a step beyond the genre’s usualboy-meets-girl script and asks play-ers to build long-term relationships.

ROME - It was a mixed bag on the opening weekend of the Serie A season for two of Italy’sgiants as Juventus were shocked by Bari while AC Milan crushed Lecce 4-0. Coming into thisseason on the back of their worst ever campaign, Juventus have spent big in their bid to get backto the top of Serie A.

that this time went just the wrongside of the upright.

It wasn’t just that Juve lost, their first opening day reverse in28 years, but they were clearlysecond best, not that Delneri sawit that way. “We’re just starting thechampionship, we had some dif-ficulties but we also created somegood things,” he said. “We needto get Amauri and (Vincenzo)Iaquinta back, they’re players whogive us more of a physical pres-ence in attack.

“But for sure we need to improveour play and our concentration.Their goal came from a quickly-taken free-kick and an experiencedteam can’t be surprised in this way.”It was quite another story for Milanwho enjoyed a stroll against theirpromoted visitors.

Pato opened the scoring on 16minutes with a finely-taken crossshot and Thiago Silva proddedhome a scramble in the box at acorner soon afterwards.Ronaldinho teed up Pato for thethird before the half-hour mark,

the Brazilian youngster beatingthe offside trap, rounding AntonioRosati and slotting into the emptynet. Veteran Filippo Inzaghi’s lastminute fourth was merely the ic-ing on the cake.

However, the pressure is nowon for Milan, who completed agreat weekend following the sign-ing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Clubpresident Silvio Berlusconi, theItaly Prime Minister, has toldcoach Massimiliano Allegri thathe must win the title. “We’vesigned a great player and of coursethat means we’ve taken a big stepforwards,” said Allegri. “It’s nor-mal that now our aim is to win thescudetto, but it was before as well. It’s a good thing he’s arrived.”

If there was a down side forMilan, though, it was that strikerMarco Borriello, whose first teamplace is certain to be taken byIbrahimovic, couldn’t hide hispersonal disappointment. “I’llhave to evaluate my future, I’mgetting squeezed out and I’m inthe prime of my career,” he said.

Hamilton ecstatic after Spa victory

McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton ofBritain celebrates with his trophy after winningthe Belgian Formula One Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, Sunday, Aug. 29,2010. Red Bull driver Mark Webber of Austra-lia placed second, and Renault driver RobertKubica of Poland finished third.

The McLaren driver won for the third time in 2010,moving himself into a four-point championship leadover Mark Webber, who finished second, after a domi-nant drive in changeable weather conditions.

“I am so happy, so grateful to be in this position,”said Hamilton. “If you have things like that in a racelike that it can be a lottery. “To come out on top, evenfacing a difficult situation - and one I was blessed toget away with, I am so happy, so ecstatic.”

Hamilton said that he had feared the worst when heslid off the track at Rivage on slick tyres on lap 35, justafter a second rain shower of the race had begun.

Fortunately for him, he kept his car moving, just skim-ming the tyre wall on the edge of the gravel trap withoutdoing his McLaren any damage. “The conditions were re-ally tricky when it started to rain,” he added. “I was losingtemperature in the tyres and not knowing how hard to push.I braked late and locked a wheel and went wide in Turn 8.

“I made it all the way out to the wall and just clippedit with the edge of my wing. I was fortunate to get awaywith that, it was so slippery out there - there was noth-ing you could do, just tip-toe around.

“Overall the team did a remarkable job this week-end, constantly pushing. In some places we were not asfast as these guys [Webber and Robert Kubica], but it’sgreat that when we are close we can maximise it. I amso happy to be up here.”

Hamilton had hoped to finish the race behind thesafety car, so as to preserve his lead during the latterstages. He said that the final few laps required a hugeamount of concentration.

“I was hoping the safety car would stay out longer.Fortunately though, it stopped raining and the track gotbetter. “In the end I was nursing car home, bringing ithome in one piece, and just concentrating on keepingsmall gap between myself and Mark. It’s good.”
