A girl reaches to touch a wall of remembrances set up on the ground zero fence in New York, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011.

Ten years has arrived. And with it, memories. Of that September morning, when terrorists crashed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and a fourth plane crashed into a field in rural western Pennsylva-

nia. Of heroism and Samaritans and unthinkable fear.

And of nearly 3,000 killed at the hands of a global terror net-work led by Osama bin Laden, himself now dead.

On Sunday, people across

America gather to pray at cathe-drals in their greatest cities and to lay roses before fire stations in their smallest towns. Around the world, many others will do something similar because so much changed for them on that day, too.

Bells will toll. Americans will see new memorials in lower Man-hattan, rural Pennsylvania and elsewhere, symbols of a resolve to remember and rebuild.

But much of the weight of this year’s ceremonies lies in what will largely go unspoken. There’s the anniversary’s role in prompting

Americans to consider how the at-tacks affected them and the larger world and the continuing struggle to understand 9/11’s place in the lore of the nation.

“A lot’s going on in the back-ground,” said Ken Foote, author of “Shadowed Ground: America’s Landscapes of Violence and Trag-edy,” examining the role that ven-eration of sites of death and disaster plays in modern life. “These an-niversaries are particularly critical in figuring out what story to tell, in figuring out what this all means.

WASHINGTON - Summon-ing America to unity and service, President Barack Obama paid tribute to its resilience and the sacrifice of its war dead as the country prepared to mark 10 long years since the horrors of 9/11.

In an email to supporters, the president urged others to follow his lead. “With just a small act of service, or a simple act of kind-

ness towards others, you can both honor those we lost and those who serve us still, and help us recap-ture the spirit of generosity and compassion that followed 9/11,” the president wrote.

Earlier, at Arlington, he and his wife held hands with each other and hugged other visitors among rows of white tombstones from the long wars that Obama is wind-ing down after more than 6,000 American troop deaths.

Obama, a little-known state senator in Illinois at the time of the attacks, now has the responsibility to help lead America in remem-brance of a trauma 10 years on. On Sunday, the president is sched-uled to visit all three sites where hijacked planes struck — New York City, Shanksville, Pennsyl-vania, and the Pentagon — before delivering evening remarks at a memorial event at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama sought a balance between remembering the attacks and the nearly 3,000 people who died, and moving for-ward. He thanked troops who have served in the post-Sept. 11 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and praised the military successes that led to advances against al-Qaida and the killing of the group’s leader, Osama bin Laden.

Chairman of the Theater ParadeCommittee, Dewa Gede Palguna,in the midst of the event on Friday(Sep 9) night said the main purposeof the parade was to provide op-portunity for the growth of moderntheater in Bali as one of the artisticexpressions for Balinese people.

“The parade is also to encouragethe growth of theater arts in Bali,

was a form of very broad artisticexpression. There was hardly aguidance restricting in it. Art Di-rector, player, set stylist, musician,

lighting artist and all modern theaterworkers had a very wide space toshow off their expression on stage. On that account, he said, the mod-ern theater had become a kind ofart ‘accommodating’ all forms andtypes of other arts into a single unitof performance.

“The art of vocal, music, actingand dance are coalescing into asingle entity in a theatrical perfor-mance. Therefore, there is a hugeopportunity for theater artists toabsorb and process the variousforms of Balinese traditional artsinto a new show that will enrich the

The process, said Palguna, ofcourse had to be pursued continu-ously. Expectedly, such kind of the-ater parade could be organized reg-ularly in Bali. This year, there wereonly 8 theaters from 4 regencies andcity getting involved. “We hope thisparade can stimulate other theatergroups to be more creative and holdperformance more frequently sothat in years to come all regencies/city across Bali can participate in

Then water rushed through and killed the engines, sending the M.V. Spice Islanders upside down and pitching hundreds of people into the deep sea early Saturday morning. A witness counted nearly 200 bodies, and the president of the nearby island of Zanzibar said more than 570 people were rescued, suggesting the boat was overloaded. Some survivors said the

boat’s capacity was about 600.Those lucky enough to find

something to cling to floated in the dark waters for at least three hours until the strong currents began to wash them up on the white sandy shores of Zanzibar. As the sun rose, news of the tragedy had already spread throughout the community and thousands of people were on

the beach, desperately hoping their family members would be the next to emerge from the waves. One man — too upset to give his name — screamed over and over again the names of 25 missing family members, including his sisters, wife and grandsons.

Throughout the day, police waded through the clear waters to shore, car-rying bodies on stretchers, wrapped in brightly colored cloth and blan-kets. The smallest bundles — the children — they carried in their arms. Tourists on the popular island helped survivors and local charities provided blankets and tea.

CAIRO — Israel and Egypt’s leadership tried Saturday to limit the damage in ties after protesters stormed Israel’s embassy in Cai-ro, trashing offices and prompting the evacuation of nearly the entire staff from Egypt in the worst crisis between the countries since their 1979 peace treaty.

The 13-hour rampage deep-ened Israel’s fears that it is grow-ing increasingly isolated amid the Arab world’s uprisings and, in particular, that Egypt is turning steadily against it after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, the authoritarian leader who was a close ally.

In Israelis’ eyes, the scene of cars burning outside the embassy and the tale of six Israeli guards trapped inside for hours in a steel-doored safe room underscored their view that anti-Israeli senti-ment in Egypt was running free after decades of being contained by Mubarak’s regime. The ousted leader’s powerful security forces never would have let a protest get near the Nile-side embassy.

Egypt’s new military rulers, in turn, appear caught between preserving key ties with Israel

— which bring guarantee them billions in U.S. military aid — and pressure from the Egyptian public. Many Egyptians are de-manding an end to what they see as too cozy a relationship under Mubarak, who they feel knuckled under to Israel and the U.S., doing nothing to pressure for conces-sions to the Palestinians.

Egyptian security forces did nothing as hundreds of protesters massed Friday outside the Nile-side high rise residential building where the Israeli Embassy is located and tore down a concrete security wall Egyptian authorities erected there only weeks earlier. Many protesters saw the wall as a symbol of the government’s willingness to protect Israelis but not Egyptians, since it was put up to keep back protests after Israeli forces chasing militants acciden-tally killed five Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai Peninsula.

Police and military also did little initially when a group of around 30 protesters after night-fall climbed in a third-story win-dow and raced up to the embassy floors, broke into an office and began throwing Hebrew-language documents to the crowd below.

STOCKHOLM — Swedish police arrested four people on sus-picion of preparing a terror attack and evacuated an arts center in Sweden’s second largest city on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary, officials said Sunday.

The four were arrested in the west coast city of Goteborg and were suspected of plotting terrorism, said Sara Kvarnstrom, spokeswoman for the Swedish security police, SAPO. She declined to give details on the arrests and wouldn’t say whether they were linked to the 10-year an-niversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist

attacks in the United States.Kvarnstrom said SAPO saw no

reason to raise its terror alert level, which has been at “elevated” since October. “Our assessment is that there is no reason for public concern at the moment,” she told The As-sociated Press. Police in Goteborg said in a statement they had evacu-ated an arts center, located beneath Goteborg’s landmark half-mile (933-meter) Alvsborg bridge. They said the Roda Sten arts center was evacuated due to a threat deemed to pose “serious danger for life, health or substantial damage of property.”

Goteborg police said they had assisted security police with the ar-

rests, but declined to give any further comments. Kvarnstrom declined to say if the arts center or the bridge were considered as potential targets for a terror attack. Mia Christersdot-ter Norman, the head of the Roda Sten arts center, said about 400 people were celebrating the opening of an international biennial for con-temporary art when police ordered everyone to leave the building.

“Around midnight I was called out by the police and they said there was a threat to the building and asked us to quietly stop the party, which we did and everyone left,” Christersdotter Norman told The Associated Press.

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for August 31 through October 5, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Indonesia will step up its defense cooperation with three European countries, namely Germany, France and Spain, Deputy Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoed-din said here Saturday.

Indonesia had so far already been cooperating in the defense field with the three counties but only on an irregular and informal basis, he said.

Defense cooperation with the three European countries would be put on a more formal footing and intensified, including in the defense industry field, he said.

“With Germany and Spain, talks have already reached an

advanced stage where memo-randums of understanding are being prepared for signing by the respective defense ministers in the near future,” he said.

Talks with France had already resulted in an initial draft cooper-ation agreement that still needed to be discussed and improved, Sjafruddin added.

After the formal agreements had been signed, defense coop-eration with the three European countries would be intensified and expanded.

As part of the process to forge the closer defense cooperation with the three European coun-tries, Sjafrie said, he would be making a one-week tour in Eu-

rope starting on September 11. He would make working visits

to Berlin and Stuttgart (Ger-many), Madrid (Spain) as well as Paris and Marseille (France) during the one-week period.

“Needless to say that the de-fense cooperation agreements with those countries will be based on the principles of mutual respect, appreciation and benefit, and made to serve the national interest,” Sjafrie said.

Indonesia would also seek co-operation in the defense industry field with the three European countries as part of its efforts to develop its own defense indus-try and spur national economic growth, Sjafrie said.

Construction workers build a new elevated road to ease serious traffic problems in Jakarta on September 9, 2011. Indonesia on September 8, 2011 held its interest rate steady at 6.75 percent, with the central bank still wary of the effect of inflation. Bank Indonesia said the rate was being held in an effort to keep the economy stable amid increasing uncertainty in the world’s economic system.

The military chopper searching for the Australian and Slovakian pilots from the crashed Susi Air aircraft lost contact on Saturday, said Mimika military district com-mander Christian Tuhuteru.

“There is a chance they have

landed somewhere for an emer-gency,” Tuhuteru said of the miss-ing Bell helicopter, which had five people on board.

Susi Air’s small Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft crashed in Pap-ua’s Yahukimo district shortly

after taking off from Wamena on Friday. It was carrying fuel and food to a remote area.

Susi Air said they had spot-ted the wreckage and the pilots would have had little chance of surviving.

The sprawling Indonesian ar-chipelago relies heavily on air transport and has a poor aviation safety record. Turbulent weather conditions in Papua have caused several accidents in recent years.

Malaysia has complained to In-donesia about land-clearing fires in the neighbouring country that have led to a blanket of pollution and poor air quality. Environment Minister Douglas Uggah Embas sent a letter to his Indonesian counterpart Friday about hundreds of suspected fires on Sumatra island, national news agency Bernama reported.

Indonesia’s government has out-lawed land-clearing by fire but weak law enforcement means the ban is largely ignored, and pollution regu-larly blankets the region.

Air quality on Friday dropped to a level deemed “unhealthy” in one area of Negeri Sembilan state, south of the capital Kuala Lumpur. Though condi-tions improved on Saturday, some

60 percent of the country recorded “moderate” pollution.

Uggah Embas said Indonesia had improved efforts to tackle the problem since 2005 when parts of one Malay-sian state experienced pollution at highly dangerous levels.

He is expected to meet his coun-terpart, Gusti Muhammad Hatta, at an Association of Southeast Asian Na-tions (ASEAN) gathering in Bangkok on September 18.

And he said Malaysia would push for the setting up of a regional fire fighting squad to tackle haze-related fires in ASEAN member countries.

“We will push for this unit because we need quick deployment should any member country require such assis-tance,” he was quoted as saying.

His aides could not immediately comment on the Bernama report.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s central bank will require exporters to bring home overseas funds, in a move aimed at boosting governance and reducing exposure to short-term capital flows, according to a spokesman.

Bank Indonesia spokesman Difi Johansyah said the new regula-tion, expected to be launched this month, would require companies to repatriate foreign currency earned on exports.

The move, he said, has the potential to bring $31.5 billion of forex earnings to the country.

“The purpose is to strengthen our domestic forex market’s base,” Johansyah told AFP. “We can improve governance as we’ll be able to match fund data with the flow of goods.”

Exporters currently face no restrictions on funds parked overseas.Several emerging nations, including Indonesia, are concerned at

a growing amount of foreign capital flowing into their economies as investors seek better returns on their investments from higher interest rates compared with the West.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy, grew close to 6.5 percent from a year earlier in both the first and second quarters this year after expanding 6.1 percent in 2010.

“Although Bali is unneces-sary to have too many produc-tion centers, but we are stillexploring the existing potentialsuch as the center of tradi-tional salt farming in Buleleng,Karangasem, Gianyar and Ta-banan,” said the Division Headof Management of Maritime andFishery Resources, Saleh Pur-wanto, in Denpasar, Saturday(Sep 10).

According to him, variousefforts had been undertaken bygovernment to increase the saltproduction. Among others, ithad been implemented throughthe tradi t ional sal t farmingprogram. This year, Bali haddeveloped a plan to enhanceand empower the sector of tra-ditional salt farming, especiallyon the coastal areas in Bali.

“The potential of salt landin Bali lies in four regenciessuch as Karangasem Regencyon the area of 50.55 hectares,Buleleng (110 ha), Tabanan(2 ha) and Gianyar (0.30 ha). These regions will be made thecenter of salt industry in Bali,”

DENPASAR - A constitutionallaw professor has expressed con-cern over the recent decision of theSupreme Court to reject the JudicialCommission’s (KY) recommenda-tion to suspend judges for violatingthe judicial ethics code.

“State officials and institu-tions must respect each other andimplement whatever decisionone official or one institutionhas made, whether they like itor not,” Jimly Ashidiqqie fromstate University of Indonesia saidafter speaking at a seminar hereon Saturday.

Three judges had been consid-

ered violating the code of ethics byneglecting evidence while tryingformer anti-graft chief AntasariAzhar.

Antasari was sentenced to 18years in connection with a murdercase after the MA rejected his ap-peal. He is now seeking a judicialreview.

Due to that the Judicial Commis-sion had asked the Supreme Courtto suspend the judges from duty butthe MA had refused to do it.

Jimly Ashidiqqie who is alsothe former chief of the Constitu-tional Court said MA’s stand toreject KY’s recommendation wasnot wise.

“KY is a constitutional institu-

tion and its existence is regulated

state institution,” he said.He said once MArefused to hon-

or the decision of other institutionsit could not expect other institutionsto also respect its decision.

“This can be a bad precedentfor the tradition of statehood in thefuture. This is an institutional affair, not a personal one. MA’s futuredecisions may be ignored (becauseof its stance),” he said.

He said the KY’s decision ac-tually could be used by MA as anentry point to correct what hadbeen decided before. MA’s currentstand would be counter-productive,he said.

“MAhas rejected KY’s decisionwhich it considered as an interven-tion into the substance of a case. This is a mere perception of MAtowards KY’s decision-making pro-cess while that is not the actual fact.KY only saw the process of rulingnot the substance when making thedecision,” he said.

Jumly said the view differencebetween the two sides could create

which could be used as an exampleof an inter-state problem that couldbe brought to the ConstitutionalCourt for settlement.

“Although under the law onconstitutional court MA could notbecome a party in a dispute over

authority of state institutions,” hesaid.

The law states that for fear MAwould be used by people who are

for its review.“But if the Constitutional Court

is willing to handle the case more-over after it has produced a regu-lation on procedures for a disputeamong state institutions it is not im-possible for the case to be handledby Constitutional Court,” he said.

The prohibition for MA to beput as a party in a dispute is limitedonly to its rulings or the case sub-stance. “Others are not prohibitedsuch as about cost of a case and casemaking,” he said.

he explained. He further said that his party

had asked the regency/munici-pality government to performdata collection on the potentialof existing land and make coor-dination with landowners, so asnot to result in problems lateron. Related to partnerships withother parties, the salt farmersin Bali remained to face capitalproblem in access to bank orother financial institutions. Ad-ditionally, they had no partner-ship and still got in touch withcollectors only.

“Commercial flows of salttrade system are generally fromfarmers to collectors. Yet, thereis also from farmers to middle-men and then to collectors. Inthe tradit ional salt farming, people experience difficulties inthe form of production activity, limited storage, uncertain priceas well as venture capital,” heexplained.

Potential of salt in Bali wasstill cultivated by local commu-nities through small scale andtraditional production. On that

account, to increase the produc-tion it required a training toenhance the capacity, financingof facilities and infrastructure aswell as financing of human re-sources and institutional capac-ity. “Hopefully, with the goodintention of central government, the land area of salt industrycould be developed and managedproperly,” he said.

He added that market in Bali

still lacked of salt supply andit was brought in from Madura. As a matter of fact, by maxi-mizing the existing potentialthe local market needs couldbe fulfilled.

Meanwhile, the Empower-ment Program of TraditionalSalt Farming (PUGAR) 2011 bythe Ministry of Maritime andFishery Affairs on a land area of4,365 hectares was expected to

generate as much as 349,200 tonsof salt. This year, Ministry of Mar-itime Affairs allocated the fund ofPUGAR worth IDR 96 billion for70,000-100,000 salt farmer groupsall over Indonesia. Though sweet, its ripe fruit is less delicious because of many seeds. However, it may be enjoyed by making it into a drink mixed with palm sugar and tamarind paste. Meanwhile, its young fruit is used for the mixture of tum (steamed chopped meat with complete spices) and lawar (chopped meat mixed with boiled vegetables served with complete spices). Here, the young seedy banana is enjoyed as vegetable in coconut milk.

BULELENG Regency pos-sesses many ancient villages ina row on the highlands along theTejakula and Banjar Subdistrict. In Banjar Subdistrict sits quitea few villages like the Sidatapa,Pedawa, Cempaga, Tigawasa andBanyusri. Meanwhile, in TejakulaSubdistrict stand uniquely the vil-lage of Sembiran, Julah and othervillages having close relationshipto ancient villages in Bangli Re-gency. As villages retaining his-

many distinctive cultural traditionswhich should be maintained, notmerely for the sake of tourism, butmore as an asset to trace back thepastime history.

As tourist destination, thoseancient villages apparently havenot been managed optimally. It canbe seen from the lack of attentionextended by local government topreserve the tourism potential, whereas if these objects are man-aged accordingly they are surelyable to boost the tourism develop-ment in Northern Bali. Moreover, many foreign tourists are nowlooking for the attraction of ancientvillages.

One of the evidences showingthe lack of government’s attentionto preserve the ancient villages isthe absence of facilities indicatingthe direction to those villages. Al-though there are promotional toolsof the objects such as signboard

pointing out the location of theancient village, they are left dam-aged even for years. This conditionhappens to the signboard point-ing out the village of Sidatapa,Cempaga, Tigawasa and Pedawain Banjar Subdistrict. A woodensignboard whose paint has beenobsolete even almost collapsesas the pole has decayed. Not onlythat, the signboard is very dif-

building on the Singaraja-Seriritroad section, precisely at Temu-kus Village, Banjar Subdistrict.“Many foreign guests often askdirection to location of Cempaga,Sidatapa, Pedawa, and TigawasaVillage. Actually, there has beena signboard but is invisible. So,they choose to ask for informa-tion to the local,” said one of theresidents.

In the meantime, Chief of Pe-dawa Village, Putu Sudarmaja,

of the village, was now very in-tensively arranging the PedawaVillage. One of the measuresundertaken was preserving theancient house with historical val-ues. If only relying on the naturalscenery of course Pedawa Village

“We even highlight the historicalvalue,” he said.

According to Sudarmaja, theexisting obstacle for tourismdevelopment was the matter of

road infrastructure. He addedthe road access to Pedawa Vil-lage, Tigawasa Village and otherancient villages was in damagedcondition. At Pedawa, the villageroad had even been repaired butdamaged again. “Most constraintsof tourism development lie in theinfrastructure such as the roadsthat are easily damaged,” hesaid.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bule-leng Culture and TourismAgency,Putu Tastra Wijaya, did not dis-miss if the management of theancient village tourist destinationin Buleleng had not been maximal.Tastra said that Buleleng wasindeed known to have numerousancient village attractions. Theywere located in Banjar Subdistrictincluding the Sidatapa, Cempaga,Tigawasa and Pedawa Village oroften called SCTP. In addition, theother ancient villages could also befound in Tejakula Subdistrict suchas Sembiran and Julah Village.

Unfortunately, the potential ofthose ancient villages was nowleaving a name only. Meanwhile,in reality a lot of houses belong-ing to local residents had beenrefurbished and converted into amodern house. This situation wasunable to be dammed by govern-ment because community as thehomeowners had the authorityto renovate it and could not beintervened. (BTN/kmb)

The 46-year-old actor is the sub-ject of the latest roast, which was taped Saturday night at Sony Studios and will air Sept. 19 on Comedy Central. Sheen took the stage in true rock-star fashion, as rock ‘n’ roll guitarist Slash heralded his introduc-tion. The actor, dressed in a black suit, white shirt and red tie, smiled and laughed as roasters jabbed at his famous family, his notorious taste for drugs and prostitutes and his primetime firing.

“Charlie’s meltdown was so bad, Al Gore’s making a documentary about it,” quipped comedian Jeffrey Ross, who was dressed as Muam-

mar Gaddafi in a military outfit with fringed epaulets and a sash. “The only time your kids get to see you is in re-runs,” Ross said. Comedian Jon Lovitz also took a timely swipe at Sheen: “How much (cocaine) can Charlie Sheen do?” he asked. “Enough to kill two and a half men.”

Priceline pitchman Shatner re-minded Sheen to “book your next rehab stay through Priceline.com.” Walsh, who is best known for her roles on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Pri-vate Practice,” gave standup a shot at the roast. “It’s amazing, despite all those years of abusing your lungs,

your kidneys and your liver, the only thing you’ve had removed is your kids,” she said to Sheen.

The most bizarre performer was Tyson, who got plenty of laughs despite his almost unintelligible de-livery. “I’m the greatest poet alive,” he said as he concluded his time on stage. “I will eat your children!” Comedian Amy Schumer joked, “Is his interpreter here?”

Steve-O of “Jackass” fame was also among the roasters. His big trick was running repeatedly into Tyson’s fist, which he did until he reportedly broke his nose. The com-ics also took digs at Sheen’s former live-in girlfriends, whom he referred to as “the goddesses,” and ex-wife Brooke Mueller, who was sitting in the audience Saturday.

After the comedians had their say, roast master Seth MacFarlane introduced the night’s honoree as “a man with a big heart, because it’s been dangerously enlarged by cocaine use.”

VENICE, Italy — Russian direc-tor Aleksander Sokurov’s “Faust,” a new take on the German legend about the quest for knowledge at all cost, won the Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday. “Faust” tells the tale of a professor, played by Johannes Zeiler, who craves knowledge and sells his soul for the love of Mar-garete, played by Isolda Dychauk. The Mephistopheles character is played by Anton Adasinskiy.

Dense and difficult to watch, “Faust” was nevertheless one of the critics’ top choices among the 23 in-competition films at Venice this year. It marks the final chapter in Sokurov’s four-film look at the rela-tionship between man and power that began with “Moloch” in 1999 about Hitler, “Taurus” a year later about Lenin and the 2005 film “The Sun” about Japanese Emperor Hirohito.

At a post-award news confer-ence, Sokurov made an impas-sioned plea for governments to continue supporting culture with state funds. “Culture is not a luxury! It is the basis for the de-velopment of the society,” he said, adding that he had even raised the issue with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in a phone call just after he won.

“And so I am making an appeal to the Italian minister of culture:

Thank you for existing! Insist with all methods you have on keeping culture.” Sokurov said working with the German cast was one of the most impressive experiences he has had in years, even if he still wonders whether a German direc-tor would have been better suited for the task.

“German culture is a fundamen-tal one in Europe,” he said. Venice’s best actor award went to Michael Fassbender for his portrayal as a sex addict in Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” while the best actress award went to Deanie Ip, who plays an aging domestic servant opposite her master in Hong Kong director Ann Hui’s “A Simple Life.”

“I can’t believe how young and beautiful and sexy this woman is!” jury chair Darren Aronofsky gushed of Ip after the awards ceremony. He said the jury, which included David Byrne and Andre Techine, was moved by the mes-sage of Hui’s film. “It’s an issue we deal with in every part of the world and ... to see a journey from health to death with such generos-ity was very touching,” he said of “A Simple Life.” Ip, for her part, said the film made her realize that she wasn’t getting any younger.

“I don’t want to be a burden to anybody, and I really don’t want to go to a senior home, so I will start planning when I go back to Hong Kong,” she said.

A Texas oilman once envisioned long pipelines carrying water to drought-stricken Texas cities, just one of several untested fantasies of moving water vast distances. Parched Las Vegas still wants to indirectly siphon off excess water from the overflowing Mis-sissippi River. French engineers have simulated hauling an iceberg to barren Africa. There are even mega-trash bags to move heavy loads of water.

There’s certainly plenty of rain-

water available. Tropical Storm Lee dumped enough on the already saturated Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Gulf Coast to bring 9.6 inches of rain across the entire state of Texas, according to calculations by the National Oceanic and At-mospheric Administration and The Associated Press.

“One man’s flood control is another man’s water supply,” said Patricia Mulroy, general manager of the Southern Nevada Water Au-thority. “Doesn’t it make you want

to think about a larger distribution that helps both? That’s the crazy part of this. It’s a win-win. There’s no loser.”

But moving vast quantities of water is not simple or cheap, and thus not realistic, experts say. Most-ly, it’s too costly and political.

However, these dreamed-up con-cepts show that a quiet water crisis is getting more desperate. “We will go to any lengths to avoid confront-ing the reality of water shortages,” said University of Arizona law professor Robert Glennon, author of the book “Unquenchable.”

“What all those zany ideas sug-gest are the traditional beliefs that we can control nature and there must be some oasis out there where we can go to, to import water.”

The area covered by Arctic sea ice reached it lowest point this week since the start of satellite observations in 1972, German researchers announced on Sat-urday.

On September 8th, the North Pole’s icy skull cap shrank to 4.24 million square kilometres (1.637 million square miles), about half-a-percent under the previ-ous record low set in September 2007, according to the University of Bremen’s Institute of Environ-mental Physics.

The Arctic’s dwindling sum-mer sea ice is described by sci-entists as both a measure and a driver of global warming, with negative impacts on a local and planetary scale. It is also further evidence of a strong human im-print on climate patterns in recent decades, the researchers said.

“The sea ice retreat can no more be explained with the natu-ral variability from one year to the next, caused by weather influ-ence,” Georg Heygster, head of

the Institute’s Physical Analysis of Remote Sensing Images unit, said in a statement. “Climate models show, rather, that the reduction is related to the man-made global warming which, due to the albedo effect, is particularly pronounced in the Arctic.”

Albedo increases when an area once covered by reflective snow or ice -- which bounces much of the Sun’s radiative force back into space -- is replaced by deep blue sea, which absorbs the heat in-stead. Temperatures in the Arctic region have risen more than twice as fast as the global average over the last half century.

The Arctic ice cover has also become significantly thinner in recent decades, though it is not possible to measure the shrinkage in thickness as precisely as for surface area, the statement said.

The US National Snow and Ice Data Center, which likewise tracks Arctic ice cover on a daily basis, has not announced a record low ice cover. Data posted on its website only covered the period through September 6.

A person tries to kill themselves in China every two minutes, the government and state media said Thursday, giving the country one of the highest suicide rates in the world. China’s suicide rate is 22.23 people out of every 100,000, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said on its website.

“Our nation has one of the high-est rates of suicide in the world,” the Beijing Youth Daily quoted Beijing Health Bureau spokesman Mao Yu as saying. About 287,000 people

kill themselves in the country of 1.3 billion every year, while about two million try to commit suicide annually.

China marks World Suicide Pre-vention Day on Saturday, according to the Beijing Youth Daily. The disease control centre said suicide is the biggest killer among Chinese aged 15 to 34. Extreme pressure to perform well at school and to find employment were the main reasons behind the high rate of suicide among China’s youths, media said.

The suicide rate in rural areas is three times higher than in urban

centres and accounts for 75 percent of China’s suicide total, it said. Ac-cording to the Guangzhou Daily, the number of suicides in China has risen sharply during the reform and open period, when the nation’s economy has boomed.

A person attempts to commit suicide in China every two minutes, the paper said. In 2009, the British medical journal The Lancet identi-fied Lithuania, Finland, Latvia, Hungary, China, Japan and Ka-zakhstan as all having exceptionally high rates of suicide, 20 per 100,000 people or higher.

Ford ended its drought in emphatic style, with Hir-vonen’s team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala coming home second. The team had not won since the season-opener in Sweden, but Hirvonen’s consistency in the interim meant that the Australian result brought him straight back into title conten-tion - placing him 15 points behind Sebastien Loeb with three rallies to go.

Friday had seen heavy rain and extraordinarily slippery conditions, and at first it was Citroen duo Loeb and Sebas-tien Ogier who battled for vic-tory as both Ford men made minor errors and lost time. But after Loeb rolled and Ogier slid into a tree, Hirvonen and

Latvala found themselves back in first and second - and were able to charge away from third-placed Petter Solberg (Solberg Citroen).

With Latvala almost out of mathematical title contention but Hirvonen still in with a shout, Ford had no qualms about hinting that the elder of its Finns was going to be in front by the finish whatever happened in the interim.

So while Latvala moved into the lead on Saturday, when Hirvonen lost time running first on the road, a reversal of positions was al-ways inevitable. Sure enough, on the penultimate stage of the rally Latvala slowed sig-nificantly and dropped into

second place as Hirvonen reclaimed the lead and went on to clinch the win.

“I do like this place, it’s been really kind to us, but we have this victory only because of the fantastic teamwork we have done,” said Hirvonen, who has now won the last three Rally Australias. “It’s a fantastic result and it’s so important for Ford. Of course big thanks to Jari-Matti for slowing down on the long stage and giving me the points for the championship. Now we’re back in it.”

Both Citroen drivers were able to rejoin under superally for Saturday. Initially Ogier seemed to have by far the better chance of salvaging something from the event, as his charge brought him within sight of eighth place, while 11th looked to be Loeb’s limit.

However Citroen decided

on the final day that with Hirvonen gaining so much championship ground, it had to throw all its efforts behind Loeb - despite Ogier having started the rally second in the standings, 25 points from his team-mate.

Ogier was therefore or-dered to check in late before the penultimate stage to incur a penalty, and then to park on the stage for 10 minutes. That dropped him back to finish 11th, and ensured Loeb was able to grab 10th place. The world champion then added a further three points to his tally by winning the power stage, which saw Latvala and Solberg take the second and third bonus points.

“The team made a decision because we are now under pressure from Mikko after our mistake,” said Loeb. “That is the situation.”

JARNO Trulli will remain at Team Lotus for 2012, after the Hingham-based outfit announced on Sunday that the Italian had extended his contract. The Italian joined Team Lotus for its inaugural campaign in 2010 and has played a major role in helping develop the outfit over the past two seasons.

Speaking about his new deal, Trulli said: “I am very pleased that we have been able to confirm today that my contract with Team Lotus has been extended into 2012. The challenge I first accepted when I joined the team is becoming more exciting every day, and I am very proud that I can keep helping the team take steps forward for at least another year.”

Team principal Tony Fernandes, who made a big push during the formation of his outfit in going for experienced drivers like Trulli, said: “We are all delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement to keep Jarno on board for at least one more year with our team.

“He has shown in qualifying in Monza just how much pace he has and how he can wring every last drop of performance out of his car and since day one with us he has brought a level of professionalism, insight and raw speed to our team that has helped accelerate our development on and off track.

“Today’s announcement will give us the benefit of his experience and knowledge into 2012, another very impor-tant year in the growth of our team.”
