A guide on how to use the new KC moniker internally for City employees
The new KC moniker combines a reflection of the past, an emphasis on craftsmanship and a connection to sport and entrepreneurship. It is also an immediately recognizable mark.
The KC brand has design elements referencing City Hall and is a clear nod to the great KC Monarchs baseball team --- winners of 25 national titles.
Unlike our City logos before, the new “linked” KC moniker will be open-source. Any person, or business, with good intent, has permission to use the new mark.
We encourage our entire community to embrace the new brand. This new Kansas City mark does not just belong to the government, it belongs to all of KC.
A new moniker was necessary for various reasons. The new moniker refreshes the City’s image to market ourselves in a more easily recognizable way. With the advent of social media and digital culture, we needed something that would be easily identifiable worldwide as belonging to Kansas City. It needs to fit into a in a smaller space and still be easily read.
The “fountain” logo remains the official mark of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and should remain on any official forms, documents and correspondence that represents official City business when distributed to the public. It should still be used on all permanent and semi-permanent structures and signage such as street signs, signals and buildings.
Internally, you are free to use your department’s moniker as you see fit as long as you follow the standards established herein and do not distort or modify it in any way. All department colors are contained herein along with acceptable uses.
Included is also an FAQ of specific situations so you may better understand when and how to use the new KC moniker.
It is impossible to predict the many uses and questions you may have for the new brand, so we have created this living document in hopes that it can be updated with the situations that arise as we develop the new KC. Please send us any questions or concerns to [email protected].

Two color monikerThe two color moniker will be with the “K” as the dark gray and the “C” as your department color or as the teal color (which will also be the new website’s homepage color scheme), illustrated here.
One color monikerThe one color moniker will be in all dark gray or black.
Moniker on dark backgroundsOn dark backgrounds, the moniker may be all white.

Clear spaceClear space around the moniker should be equal to the width of crossing K ascender (where the K’s strokes meet).
Position on pageTypically on top left, though it can vary. Any other use must be approved by City Communications. Contact us by emailing [email protected].
PatternThe moniker is also used in the background pattern to the left and must appear in dark grey and light grey. Other uses must be approved by City Communications.

WebsiteThe moniker will appear in a white or dark grey chevron with a drop shadow on the website according to the department color chart contained herein.
Web sizeThe moniker must not be smaller than 25 x 25 pixels.
Social mediaApproved social media icons for departments are available at www.kcmo.org/mykc.
Clothing and deliverablesThe moniker may be embroidered or printed on shirts as long as the shirt is not intended as a uniform at an official capacity representing official City business. The same applies to any deliverables. Examples of acceptable uses include coffee mugs, cups, bags, advertisements and Corporate Challenge T-shirts. Unacceptable uses include official uniforms for employees who work in the field, official letterhead and business cards and official correspondence.

If departments wish to add their department name below the KC moniker (sample left), they may request it through the City Communication’s Office. Please contact [email protected]. Every department will look slightly different due to size of their department name. All departments will be set up with Futura Md font and positioned as shown to the left. When department text is used with the moniker, the text size must still be legible. Examples of where theses can be used are advertisements, internal memos, community event signage and banners.
Business cards with your department colors are available to order through the print center at kcmo.gov/businesscard. Information is standardized for a cohesion and standardization. Some department, at the discretion of the director, may change the twitter to their own department’s twitter account, otherwise it should stay as the main KCMO account. See examples below.

The following color schemes have been broken down into appropriate families that represent six essential functions within the City.
These colors will coincide with the new kcmo.gov website’s department homepages and will be reflected in all aspects of City business.
This will not only help residents quickly identify which department they are working with, it will also serve as a “waypoint” of sorts so that when a resident has any questions, we can quickly point them in the right direction.

Q. Is the change from the fountain logo mandatory?A. No. At this time the new KC moniker is being used as a marketing brand and should not replace the fountain in an official capacity.
Q. Can I use the new KC moniker on letterhead and business cards?A. At this time, the official fountain letterhead should not be altered. Business cards with your department colors are available through the print center and may be requested at kcmo.gov/businesscard.
Q. Can I use the new KC moniker on my email signature?A. Yes. A file with your department’s signature block along with an instructional video are avail-able at www.kcmo.org/mykc.
Q. I don’t have the official fonts on my computer, what should I do?A. If you have a document that you would like in the standard fonts, please email [email protected]. It will be returned to you in pdf format and kept on file. If you do not have the fonts installed on your computer, the font Arial is preferred for everyday use.
Q. How do I get a copy of my department’s moniker?A. For a copy of your department’s moniker visit www.kcmo.org/mykc. If you need a copy of the moniker in a format other than what is available, email [email protected] with a short description on how you plan to use it, what file type you would like and if you will need any design assistance from our design staff.
Q. Can the new KC moniker be used on shirts?A. The new KC moniker may be used on shirts as long as they are intended for use as promotional pieces only, and not worn by representatives of the City in an official capacity such as (but not limited to) inspectors, field worker uniforms, etc. Casual wear in the office is seen as an acceptable use, such as a polo shirt in the office setting.

Q. Can the new KC moniker be used on banners and signage at community events?A. Yes, the moniker can be used in this capacity. Email [email protected] with your request before placing the order to ensure the correct file format is sent to the vendor.
Q. Can the moniker be used for personal purposes?A. Yes, the logo is open source and logo assets can be downloaded at www.thenewkc.com.
Q. Why did the City need a new moniker?A. While the fountain logo has served City well, the times are changing. The mark needs to be immediately recognizable, no matter the size, context or audience. The fountain does not fit into normal social media and digital formats. The new KC moniker is easy to reproduce at any size or format, and is easily recognizable worldwide.
