STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT

The Characteristic

Modelling LampStudio flash units are fitted with a continuous lamp, which can be seen on this photograph sitting in the centre of the circular flash tube. Because of its position it gives a very accurate indication of the angle and quality that the flash will produce when fired. This makes your lighting easy to set-up, because'what-you-see-is-what-you-get'.

ControlIt's all very well having lots of power, but it's no use if you can't control it! Even the most simple and inexpensive studio flash units have at least a 'full/half power' switch, most will offer much more control.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

Characteristic

Snoot:The Snoot produces a hard edged circle of light and is one of the most popular accessories. It is conical in shape and fits onto the front of a head. Mainly used as a backlight or hair light with good tight control.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

CharacteristicThe reflector directs all the strobe light output onto the set.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

CharacteristicThe honeycomb produces a soft edged circle of light. Mainly used as a back or hair light or for putting a graduated circle of light onto the background. A variety of honeycombs are available which give different angles of illumination. Honeycombs are often used with coloured filter gels to change the colour of the background.

Barn Doors are black metal flaps that sit around a strobe head and keep the light from going where you don't want it to go. If you really want to control the angle of the light cone thrown by your head, you should probably get a zoom head or a bunch of grids.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

CharacteristicUmbrellas:Silver brollies are very efficient, this means very little light loss. They give a punchy sparkle to your pictures. White reflective brollies give a natural soft light, which is ideal forchildren and older people. Translucent (shoot-through) brollies give the softest, most diffused light. However, they are not so efficient. In a small room the reflected light canadd to the fill -in!

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

CharacteristicSoftboxes:The softest of all - and the bigger they are the softer they are. Their effect is similar to the shoot-through brolly but the light is much more controlled. For head and shoulder portraits a 60 or 70cm square softboxwill work well. For half to threequarter length the 100cm square is better (can even be used for full length if your subjectis not too tall!)

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENTThe

CharacteristicA flashmeter works in pretty much the same way as the lightmeter in your camera except that it measures the amount of light produced by a flashgun. When using studio flash you normally only need to worry about the aperture that should be set on your lens. When using cameras with a focal plane shutter (35mm SLRs and some medium format cameras) you must ensure that the shutter is open long enough for the flash and therefore you must set the correct shutter speed on your camera as recommended by the manufacturer. Often this will be indicated on the shutter speed dial or in the users manual. Dont worry that the speed may seem a little slow, the fast flash duration will freeze most subjects and cope with any camera shake.
