Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Fáilte go dti Stáid an Ghearaltaigh tráthnóna inniu. Táim cinnte go mbeidh cluichí sármhaith againn. Fáilte spesialta roimh na fóirne – Dr. Crócaigh agus An Léigiún Cill Áirnei gCluiche Ceannais Craobh Sinsear na gClub agus Árd Fhearta agus Spá i gCluicheCeannais Peile Craobh Na gClub Idirmheánach. Fáilte freisin roimh na réiteoirí agusna h-oifigigh eile.

I extend a hearty welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Dr. Crokes,Killlarney Legion, Spa and Ardfert to the finals of Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Senior& Intermediate Club Championships.

I am confident that the players and their supporters will enjoy the games with theIntermediate winners having the added honour of being Kerry’s representatives in theMunster Intermediate Club Championship. Every club now fully realises that, by puttingin the supreme effort in training, they too can reach this stage of the competition.

It is a great occasion for the club and the local community to follow their heroes’ progressin the county club championships and reaching the All-Ireland Final is the ultimate prizeand what a great occasion that is for a club.

It has been a great innovation to give the Intermediate and Junior Championshipswinners the opportunity of having a Provincial and All-Ireland series where even thesmallest club can have the opportunity of playing in an All-Ireland Final at Croke Park.Kerry clubs have enjoyed this experience in the past few years.

CLUBS The contribution the GAA club makes to its community is very important. The rise inemigration is having a negative impact on playing members with some clubs finding itdifficult to field teams. Keeping the club’s identity is very important for the localcommunity.

Clubs need volunteers now more than ever before to help them through thesechallenging times. The clubs rely on the voluntary work of people in their communities, who devote their time and energy to further the aims of the GAA in providing an amenityfor young and old to play and enjoy the games.

SPONSORSI take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Castleisland Co-Op Mart for their continuedsponsorship of our club championships, we are very grateful for their genuine interestand generous support of our games.

BUÍOCHASThanks to all our supporters and patrons who attended our games during the year andto our sponsors for their continued generous financial support.

Enjoy the games.

For the second

season in a row

those two deadly

rivals, Dr Crokes and

Legion, go head to head

in the in the Kerry Senior

Club Final. In 2013, the all

conquering Dr Crokes ran

riot with an impressive

17 point winning margin

but Legion returned in

2014 just 9 short months

later to dump their

neighbours out of the

Senior County

Championship and in

doing so they denied Dr Crokes a coveted 5th

County title in a row. The question is, can

Legion, who have flourished under the new

management team of Peter Keane, Diarmuid

Leen and Chris Flannery, do so again. Dr Crokes

manager Martin Byrnes is confident that his

team are in a much better place than they

were in the summer gone by. “I think a number

of things went against us in the summer but

the lads have regrouped and we did well in a

few County League games and I really feel that

we are ready to hit the ground running again.

Legion were deserving winners in the County

Championship game there is no question

about that but we’re hoping now that we can

improve on our performance in a big way! The

fact that we are playing our neighbours, the

Legion, makes this an even more important

game. It’s a massive game for the town of

Killarney and even when the Crokes and Legion

u12’s play each other there is huge rivalry so

we are obviously looking forward to the game

this weekend. The County Championship is

gone, we’ve forgotten about that now and all

our focus is on having a good finish to the 2014

season.”

It’s been nearly 5 months since the Legion

actually last played in the senior club

championship but their run to the final has

been highly impressive even if it’s hard to

remember at this stage due to the truncated

nature of these competitions. Big wins over

Division 1 teams St Michael’s Foilmore and

Kerins O’Rahilly’s were followed by a superb

derby win against a highly fancied Rathmore

team. Despite Legion’s recent loss to Dingle on

the quarterfinal of the County Championship

their manager Peter Keane is still relatively

pleased with his side’s progress. “There is little

point in crying over spilt milk and we have had

to quickly get over the fact that we conceded

a late goal to Dingle in the County

Championship. We face a huge battle once

more against Dr Crokes in the final on Sunday.

I think in last year’s senior club

final they won the final against us

by a margin of something like 17

points and there is always the

potential for that to happen again

even though we feel that we have

made good progress over the past

few months. Dr Crokes will be

huge favourites coming into the

final and that has to be expected

despite the fact that we showed

we are capable of beating them in

the County Championship. With

our lads this is very much a work

in progress. Dairmuid Leen, Chris

Flannery and myself have been

working with these lads for

around 7 months but we know

that there is still plenty for us to

do. We have already qualified for Division 1 of

the League this year and that was one of our

key goals. Being realistic however we are facing

a very experienced side who will no doubt be

looking beyond this game and a potential 4 in

a row of Senior Munster Club titles.”

Legion have been on the end of several

drubbings at the hands of their arch rivals in

recent years that is why their summer county

championship win against Dr Crokes was so

remarkable. Peter Keane and his backroom

team have worked wonders with this team in

a short space of time but they will surely have

been disappointed with both their

performance and the manner of their defeat

against Dingle in the quarterfinal of the county

championship. The question is can they quickly

bounce back from that reverse or are Dr

Crokes ready to resume where they left off

prior to their poor summer run. This game

should be much closer than last year’s final but

Dr Crokes have to be favourites to give

themselves a 50/50 chance of representing

Kerry in Munster this year and with that a

potential tilt at a 4 in a row of Munster Senior

Club titles.

THE MICHAEL O’CONNOR CUPToday’s winners will be presented with the Michael O'Connor Cup.

Michael (R.I.P.) was a member of the Dr. Crokes Club and played

on the all-conquering O`Donoghue Cup sides that won seven-in-a-

row 1956-62. He represented Kerry at all levels Minor, Junior

(winning a Munster medal in 1959) and Senior. He was also an

accomplished hurler.

It was as an administrator however, that Michael really excelled,

firstly as Club Secretary for a decade and afterwards, when he

became Secretary of the Fitzgerald Stadium, a committee he revitalised. He was

the driving force of the major Stadium developments that took place in the 1960s,70s, & 80s.

As chairman of Bord na bPáirc, the precursor to Kerry GAA Development Officer, he set out a

7 year target that every club would have its own pitch and ancillary facilities by 1984, the

centenary year of the GAA. “Impossible”, he was told, but he travelled all over Kerry showing

how to make the impossible possible and facilitated the drawing down of grants from the

Munster Council. By 1984 only 2 clubs in Kerry did not own their own club grounds.

He was elected Kerry Delegate to Munster Council in 1973, was both secretary and chairman

of the Munster Council’s Development Committee and was Munster Council’s representative

on Central Bód na bPáirceanna Committee from 1982 to 1985. On March 4th 1983 he was

elected Vice Chairman of the Munster Council at the Convention in Cork and was elected

Chairman of that body in March 1986 at their AGM held here in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

At the time of his death in May 1991 he was Munster Council Treasurer.

Considering they’ve both been here before, itprobably isn’t any different or challenging foreither Ardfert or Spa to get themselves readyfor the occasion. However maybe Sunday isshowing the first signs of the legacy both clubsprevious travails in the Munster and All-Irelandseries have had on the clubs in general. Theyounger players in both clubs no doubt lookedon and were inspired by the days out in CrokePark that they both experienced but it’s allabout the here and now on Sunday.

In essence this is a Final very few would havepredicted at the outset. Both sides had beenrelegated from their Divisions (1 for Spa, 2 forArdfert) in the County League last year and bothhad gone out in the First Round of last year’sIntermediate proceedings. Spa’s 2013 in generalwas one to forget as they failed to win a competitive gamein either the Intermediate Championship, County League orEast Kerry Championship. Ardfert slipped down to Division3 as St Brendans’ long overdue County HurlingChampionship success proved to be the main highlight forthe club’s dual players in 2013. Both went back to what theyknew in terms of managers with Sean Moynihan returningto Spa and Pat O’Driscoll once again answering the call forArdfert in a time of need. Both have managed at Inter-County level in recent times, O’Driscoll with the Kerry Minorsin 2010 and 2011 while Sean Moynihan was over the KerryJunior team in 2012 and 2013 that won the All-Ireland titlein his first year. Interestingly Moynihan’s successor as KerryJunior manager, Stephen Wallace, will be on the line todayas a selector with his native club Ardfert.

Spa would have been expected to beat Castlegregory in theFirst Round but Ardfert’s defeat of last year’s runners-upSt Marys in their opener was probably the more eye-catching. Interestingly the runners-up of the last fourstagings of the Intermediate Championship have gone onto lose their First Round game the following year illustratingjust how tough it can be to win this competition. Spa had awhirlwind extra-time quarter-final with Listowel Emmets inFrank Sheedy Park, nearly blowing a 10 point lead at onestage before Andrew Garnett earned them a replay on hometurf which they won convincing in the absence of some ofListowel’s regulars over the summer months.

Ardfert beat John Mitchels by a slender margin in the Traleeside’s impressive new complex before they resumed aftera four month gap with a surprise win over Castleisland

Desmonds in Austin Stack Park. Anyone whohas followed Ardfert’s progress over the lastdecade would not have been as surprisedhowever as they’ve made a name out ofproving people wrong throughout their riseup the Kerry Football ladder. Spa had toomuch for Glenflesk in their all East Kerrysemi-final, there was an air of caution aroundthe camp in advance of the match in heed ofhow anything can happen in a derby matchbetween neighbouring clubs, but once Spasettled they never looked like beingthreatened by their younger opponents. Thisis a decider that brings with it someintriguing questions.

Can Ardfert cope without the availability of Damian Wallacethrough suspension, Darren Dineen through injury and JohnEgan because of the Hurling/Shinty International betweenIreland and Scotland? Similarly how will Spa do without Mike‘Stam’ O’Donoghue should the going get tough for them? Also how will Ardfert cope in what is essentially a homedecider for Spa in Fitzgerald Stadium? Ardfert have won aCounty Final in Killarney before (the 2006 decider againstAnnascaul) but this is a different prospect against a teamnot far from Sunday’s venue. These are the sort ofchallenges the St Brendans side have revelled in during thepast but with Spa having new life from the youngercontingent of Liam Kearney, Dan O’Donoghue and ShaneCronin to name but a few, you would have to feel that

success on Sunday would be up there with even the greatestof Ardfert’s achievements in the recent past.

You get the sense also that maybe the St Brendans sidewould be happy to take a draw out of proceedings andhopefully get reinforcements back for a potential replay. InSpa’s case however, they would be conscious of the factthey were defeated after a replay by Finuge two years agoand would prefer to get it all done on the day. Beyond wherethe Fenian Cup will end up and who will represent the countyin Munster at home to Wolfe Tones of Clare in the quarter-finals next weekend, there is also a question about whetheror not this year’s Intermediate winners will go Senior in2015?

Again, that’s a debate for another day!
