Soft tones and brass details feature across the two floors of this London boutique created by Barber and Osgerby’s Universal Design Studio for fashion brand J&M DavidsonThe architects wanted to convey the brand’s signature shapes and colour palette through their design, and painted the walls in calming neutral tones of dusty taupes and soft pinks.A staircase leading down to a basement level is made with slabs of solid terrazzo marble and features a leather-wrapped handrail. The terrazzo is also used as flooring throughout the store, and is paired with bespoke cast glass plinths and heavy concrete countertops.Brushed brass fixtures feature across the store, including clothes rails and wall-mounted lighting.A doorway framed with the same brass conceals a fitting room lined with pink-coloured panels.

Italian design duo Formafantasma has installed a range of unusual timepieces in the showroom of British furniture brand Established & Sons during the London Design Festival.Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin of Formafantasma created the time-themed installation, titled From Then On, to mark Established & Sons’ tenth anniversary.A piece comprises two saxophones hooked up to a frame, programmed to sound every 15 minutes to “announce and celebrate the experience of daily life as it evolves”.A fan that opens around a brass disk gradually unfolds over the space of five minutes, forming a full circle before snapping back shut. The final clock comprises a long brass rod with a small brush on its end, hung from a horizontal beam. The pole swings like a pendulum so the bristles sweep back and forth over a curved brass strip every second, polishing the material bit by bit to prevent oxidisation.

Desktop Metal

American firm Desktop Metal is set to change how metal is manufactured with the fastest metal 3D printing system in the world. For the first time, affordable, safe and precise metal 3D printing for both prototyping and mass production will be available across industries — at speeds 100 times faster.Desktop Metal reveals its 3D printers that can form objects from hundreds of different alloys including copper, brass and steel, titanium and aluminum. According to the company’s CEO Ric Fulop, components manufactured by Desktop Metal systems compare to injection-molded items, in terms of production quality and finish. The manufacturing technique’s arrival marks a fundamental shift in how products will be developed and brought to market. DM’s studio and production systems change the rules of traditional metal manufacturing solutions that reduce costs, while significantly increase speed, safety, and print quality.Designers and engineers will find Desktop Metal increases the versatility of prototyping. Out of the box, the DM ‘studio system’ is built to support hundreds of different metal alloys — the same metals used to mass produce parts can now be used to prototype them.

Deus is a customized, electric motorcycle designed by Melbourne-based team of Ryan Mischkulnig and Joe Fischer. They began with a humble Honda ‘C90 cub’ and over a period of 5 weeks they created this minimalist, electric motorcycle that would go on to win the Deus bike build off in Sydney. While electric motorcycles are nothing new, there are companies producing all manners of battery powered two-wheelers. Electric vehicles are fascinating as they use highly efficient motors that produce 100% of their torque from 0 rpm, usually negating the need for a gearbox; shedding weight; and the massive reduction in the number of moving parts, meaning that they’re exceedingly reliable; and require almost next to no maintenance.the Deus electric custom motorcycle completed bike is a testament to the deus philosophy of making the most with the least. Copper tubing highlights the reimagined mini electric café racer, and the fresh paint job looks extra slick paired with the all black wheels.

The Experimentarium, one of Denmark’s top science centers, has reopened with a striking new interior. Designed by architecture firm CEBRA, the scheme features a 100 meter-long helix staircase, built from 160 tons of steel and clad with 10 tons of copper. The impressive structure welcomes visitors inside the museum, before spiraling upwards, leading to each of the institution’s four storeys. The Experimentarium, located in Copenhagen, seeks to explore and convey the fields of science and technology — from the illustration of fluid dynamics on its façades, to the helix staircase itself. the refurbishment doubles the size of the venue’s previous exhibition area with a total of 16 interactive exhibitions. The aim of the design is a radical change of experimentarium’s architectural expression, from previously being an introvert building to now appearing as an extrovert, engaging and vibrant attraction.

New York’s Delorenzo Gallery and designer Samuel Amoia present an exclusive collection of seven limited pieces, each made from natural materials in a variety of hues and textures. Amoia combines mediums like italian onyx, brass, and gem stones with tables, mirrors and consoles, an application which forms a distinct blend of material tactility and precision.Pieces featured in the collection include an abstract console, formed by a base of geometric shapes coated in brass shavings and topped with a surface of italian onyx; a kidney-shaped table, which also uses onyx as a surface and brass-coated legs, attached by small nubs that protrude above the top; a red jasper ‘split kidney-shaped’ console, which is supported by a sequence of rectilinear legs; a sculptured bronze drum bearing a smooth top and a rough, terrain-like façade; a circular coffee table coated in lapis lazuli supported by twelve rectilinear legs; a small round table featuring a top of white onyx and a cylindrical base encrusted with black tourmaline; and a circular mirror held by eight, evenly spaced square clasps coated with brazilian aventurine in a tree hue. Overall, the collection includes pieces that can either stand on their own, or complement each other through a balance between materials and inspired craftsmanship.

English designer Vanessa Harden creates public interventions and art installations that explore our relationship with design, people and the world around us. Harden recently designed a new Brass Fertilizing Syringe also known as ‘Plant Jewellery’ used to help a plant in need. Fill with organic fertilizer and use on the go or leave permanently placed in one of your favourite flower pots.

Founded by designers Mike Boylan and Danielle Pecora, Wander Workshop is a Brooklyn-based design studio that produces thoughtfully designed housewares. With a deep dedication to our craft, they strive to elevate everyday experiences through products that embody both beauty and functionality. Tired of the traditional wall-mounted bottle opener in their kitchen, Boylan and Pecora struck out to design something with a bit more edge to it. After two years of development and refinement, the result offers three minimalist and sleek accessories that can be proudly mounted on any kitchen wall or bar: the leverage handheld and wall-mounted bottle openers, as well as the leverage key hook. Boylan and Pecora have developed the collection with the idea of flexibility in mind. For those who prefer a more direct use, the handheld design makes it a more adequate piece — compared to the wall-mounted option. Rounding out the series is the key hook which doubles as a bottle opener that can be used on-the-go.All three products are cast in solid brass and sealed to minimize discoloration and darkening, which is common in natural uncoated brass.

English lighting producer Plumen and Made Design recently unveiled their new design Memoir Collection which includes a desk, wall and pendant light. The designers believe it is possible to inspire the adoption of efficient lighting technologies by creating beautiful-to-behold and beautiful-to-use lighting products. Combining creativity, technology, design and art to establish a new, exciting world of efficient lighting. The collection gives a modern twist to the 1950s task lamp. Sharp edged steel and polished brass combine to give it a more refined feel. The conical shape helps diffuse the light onto the surface below whilst the mesh material allows users to enjoy the bulb’s sculptural silhouette, even when turned off. The black and brass colourways evoke the smoky, panelled of ces of tightly styled 50’s interiors with the ultra-modern inclusion of the sculpted Plumen 002 LED bulb. A perforated brass sheet wraps the bulb, softening glare, directing light to where you need it, whilst adding texture and mystique as each tiny perforation acts as a camera obscura, sending tiny pockets of light across the space.
