Occupying a highly coveted spot on London’s Mount Street, J&M Davidson’s flagship store could have taken a flashy approach to compete for attention in the well-heeled Mayfair neighborhood. On the contrary, despite counting fashion heavyweights like Céline, Moynat, Roksanda Ilincic, and Christian Louboutin among its neighbors, the British luxury leather goods and clothing brand opted for a cool, calm, and quietly collected interior designed by London-based Universal Design Studio, founded by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby.Taking center stage, a traditional interlocking staircase has solid terrazzo marble treads. “Each cantilevered step is cast to interlock with the one next to it to prevent it from twisting and turning,” says Carter Owers. Located along a double-height polished plaster wall to the left of the entrance, the staircase’s brass balustrade and leatherwrapped handrail leads guests to the store’s lower level.Brushed brass fixtures feature across the store, including clothes rails and wall-mounted lighting.

Italian design duo Formafantasma installed a range of unusual timepieces in the showroom of British furniture brand Established & Sons for the London Design Festival.Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin of Formafantasma created the time-themed installation, titled From Then On, to mark Established & Sons’ tenth anniversary.A piece comprises two saxophones hooked up to a frame, programmed to sound every 15 minutes to ‘announce and celebrate the experience of daily life as it evolves.’A fan that opens around a brass disk gradually unfolds over the space of five minutes, forming a full circle before snapping back shut. The final clock comprises a long brass rod with a small brush on its end, hung from a horizontal beam. The pole swings like a pendulum so the bristles sweep back and forth over a curved brass strip every second, polishing the material bit by bit to prevent oxidisation.

Brave Matter

California studio Brave Matter has used simple forms and earthy materials to create lighting fixtures and tableware that are meant to evoke ancient artefacts. The shades are made of mineral-rich clay cast in molds, and then coated with mica-laden glazes available in several hues, from moss and red ochre to terra pink. The glazes are intended to produce “soft, glimmering and time-worn surfaces”.The third design in the collection, Sender One, is a table lamp constructed from a salt crystal that has been carefully honed and then pierced by a brass rod. The salt disc and metal rod work in tandem to allow the lamp to rest at an angle.

Apartment Vilnius belongs to a family with two children, who approached local designer Kristina Lastauskait-Pundto give the home a contemporary update that maintained its historic features. The apartment, which is set within a 19th-century residential building in the Lithuanian capital’s old town, first had to undergo extensive reconstruction works. Builders were told to leave behind the series of arched openings that run throughout the space. The designer also decided to keep fragments of fresco from the apartment’s old ceiling, which appear in the living area and master bedroom – areas that were unsalvageable have been painted over in white. The rest of the apartment follows a largely muted colour scheme. Walls have been completed in a shade of pale grey with furnishings to match, and paired with smoked-oak parquet floors. To provide touches of colour, the designer has applied gold-hued sheets of brass to the home’s entrance doorway and a singular kitchen cupboard. The material has then been used to create a decorative arch on one of the lounge’s walls, echoing the shape of the openings.

New York’s Delorenzo Gallery and designer Samuel Amoia present an exclusive collection of seven limited pieces, each made from natural materials in a variety of hues and textures.Amoia combines media such as Italian onyx, brass and gem stones with tables, mirrors and consoles—applications that form a distinct blend of material tactility and precision.Pieces featured in the collection include an abstract console, formed by a base of geometric shapes coated in brass shavings and topped with a surface of Italian onyx; a kidney-shaped table, which also uses onyx as a surface and brass-coated legs, attached by small nubs that protrude above the top; a red jasper ‘split kidney-shaped’ console, supported by a sequence of rectilinear legs; a sculptured bronze drum bearing a smooth top and a rough, terrain-like façade; a circular coffee table coated in lapis lazuli supported by 12 rectilinear legs; a small round table featuring a top of white onyx and a cylindrical base encrusted with black tourmaline; and a circular mirror held by eight, evenly-spaced square clasps coated with Brazilian aventurine in a tree hue. Overall, the collection includes pieces that can either stand on their own, or complement each other through a balance between materials and inspired craftsmanship.

As part of the refurbishment of an apartment in Hackney, North London, Bell Phillips Architects designed a minimalist, folded plate, steel stairway. The original stairs in the apartment ran parallel with the mezzanine. To open the area, they installed the new stairs along the far end of the living area. The minimal design of the stairway increases the sense of space while adding a focal point to the living area. The stairs are made from 6mm thick steel sheet, which was folded and welded before being finished using the process of spraying atomised brass directly onto the steel, called thermal spray metalising.A new handrail was attached to the brick wall, and copper trim was added to the edge of the mezzanine balustrade to complete the ensemble.

10furniture

British furniture brand Efasma recently launched its first collection, designed by Bureau de Change. The collection of tables and chairs are designed with notches in them, for the chairs to sit in when not in use.The collection is made up of handwoven walnut framed seating, substantial marble and timber dining tables, a coffee table and room divider. The depth and richness of the woven surfaces are amplified by clean, graphic forms across the range and their combination with highlights of glossy marble and brass. The dining tables have been shaped by a slotting system, in which Efasma’s dining chairs appear pushed into the edge of the table, leaving behind a footprint of satisfying brass clad notches.

English lighting producer Plumen and Made Design recently unveiled their new design Globe Collection, which includes desk, wall and pendant lights. The designers believe it is possible to inspire the adoption of efficient lighting technologies by creating beautiful-to-behold and beautiful-to-use lighting products. Combining creativity, technology, design and art to establish a new, exciting world of efficient lighting. The collection gives a modern twist to the 1950s task lamp. Sharp edged steel and polished brass combine to give it a more refined feel. The spherical shape helps diffuse the light onto the surface below whilst the mesh material allows users to enjoy the bulb’s sculptural silhouette, even when turned off. The black and brass colourways evoke tightly styled 50’s interiors, with the ultra-modern inclusion of the sculpted Plumen 002 LED bulb. A perforated brass sheet wraps the bulb, softening glare, directing light to where you need it, whilst adding texture and mystique as each tiny perforation acts as a camera obscura, sending tiny pockets of light across the space.

Canadian designers Audrée Larose and Félix Guyon launched their new lighting collection at the recent ICFF show in New York. The lights—called Perla—revisit the elegance of the late 19th century, and are part of their La Belle Époque Collection. The sculptural lights are made from delicate copper-plated chains that hang from two circular forms to create a unique curved shape, all of which is illuminated by a ring of LED lights.
