Whether you are designing condos or retail spaces or corporate offices, commercial interior design today is:

• Fast paced

• Demanding

• Needs to evoke the spirit of the brand and concept and connect with consumers

• Collaborative

• Competitive

• Needs to be fresh and unique

Challenges today include:

• Finding the style and concepts that are right for the audience and objectives.

• Communication with clients

• Balance of budget, time and client desires

• Client’s fear of the unknown and inability to visualize

Start by fully understanding the needs and objectives of the space. The form and function, the audience, and how to connect with them in the environment.

We are very visual creatures. In design, visualizations of ideas, spaces, concepts, moods, themes and purpose are important throughout the process.

• As the design goes from rough concept to final approval, the focus gets more granular and more clear.

• It is important to know your audience and to understand how much they can imagine in the early stages where the design is more conceptual and to understand when you need to be literal and show finished spaces.

• Our brains fill in blanks (it guesses) when information is not available.

• Final designs should have little to no room for blanks from your client and approvers. Finals should be realistic and inspiring, evoking a satisfaction and happiness that you’ve nailed the objectives for the space.

• Finishes, lighting, textures, mood, reflections, colors should all be finalized and approved before build.

• Final designs should include photorealistic visualizations that will be used by the contractors to emulate in the build.

• The following slide shows renders next to actual store photos.

• Design to audience, brand and objectives.

• Visualize throughout the process, starting rough and becoming more clear through each round.

• Finalize with photorealistic renders that are beautiful, inspiring and that clearly show how the space will accomplish the goals and objectives of its audience.
