iiThree areas of design that are becoming increasingly popular are ergonomic design, elder design, and environmental—or green—design. Ergonomic design involves designing work spaces and furniture that emphasize good posture and minimize muscle strain on the body. Elder design involves planning interior space to aid in the movement of people who are elderly and disabled. Green design involves selecting furniture and carpets that are free of chemicals and hypoaller-genic, and selecting construction materials that are energy-efficient or are made from renewable resources.

Employment of interior designers is expected to grow 19 percent from 2008 to 2018, faster than the average for all occupations. An increasing interest in inte-rior design and awareness of its benefits will increase demand for designers. As businesses realize the improvements that can be made to worker and customer satisfaction through good design, they will use interior designers to redesign their offices and stores.

The Interior Design program at Davis College prepares graduates with visual design skills, planning and designing interior spaces capabilities, and aware-ness of sustainability or “green” issues.

nterior designers draw upon many disciplines to enhance the function, safety, and aesthetics of interior spaces. Their main concerns are with how different colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and space work together to meet the needs of a build-ing’s occupants. Designers plan interior spaces of almost every type of building, including offices, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, and private residences.

The Interior Design Associate Degree program is designed to prepare students for positions within the interior design profession. This program integrates problem-solving abilities, aesthetics, technical skills, and communication skills in planning and designing interior spaces.

Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Business degree with a major in Interior Design, the Davis College graduate will be prepared to:

Apply the elements and principles of design to create a visual language appropriate for interior design, which includes the creation and drafting of functional space plans and floor plans, and the incorporation of finishes, window treatments, and furniture into a cohesive interior environment.

Use technology that is appropriate for interior design professional practice including industry standard computer aided drafting software.

Analyze and evaluate his/her work in terms of the design elements and principles, project requirements, and client needs.

Apply the principles and intentions of the General Education and Business Core purposes.

Since 1996 Davis College graduates have also designed the interiors of several homes in the Parade of Homes.

Community Involvement Interior design students, faculty, and alumni redesigned rooms at the Battered Women’s Shelter.

Interior design students took part in the Canstruction Competition and won the People’s Choice award.

Interior design students participated in the Maumee Uptown Business Associa-tion Window Display competition.

Field trips to area interior design offices allow you to observe real-world design activities

Biannual Chicago trip immerses you in design culture and history
