thesis: the contemporary american family has shifted drastically over a 50 year span. the typical family prevalent in the mid-century era has been almost completely eradicated and replaced with a variety of family types that are not always easily identifiable. elements not prevalent in the mid-century [including single parent, divorce, and dual earner households] are increasingly in vogue today. how has this impacted domestic architecture in the residential sector? in order to suit the more realistic needs of the client, a study of the various housing styles over a fifty year span (and their modifications) must be investigated. this project aims to identify the correlation and impact that the average 21st century family has on the american home. fa2013-sp2014

-limited use of decorations/blinds, allows architecture to speak for itself

-split level, creates limited footprint of the structure... allows for 360 interior and exteiror views from any point of the home

-balance between floors, draws the eye downstairs to public, limits line of vision to upstairs [private]

-modular characteristics found in the strict geometric column grid... contains space on the main and lower levels

senior seminar I&IIas you can the floorplan is somewhat segregated... but half of the ploorplan is divided onto two seperate levels, which affords a unique level of privacy. the home boasts 4-5 bedrooms, one of which contains a demountable demising wall which affords a flexibility between spaces if one of the family’s children move out of the home. most of the central corridor on the upper level is open to below, but secluded visually by a series of obstacles that limits your view to the upstairs from the main level.

motorcourt

breezeway

a large portion of this project focused on the site and exterior architecture. my manipulating sight lines through compresion and expansion, i am able to control what the user sees at what point in time. by playing with the sight lines on the interior and exterior, i am able to create an overall cohesive and interconnected design.

by placing a large sundial in the direct path and view of the vehicles, it serves three purposes. first, to provide a proper end to the long sight lines of the driveway, second to force circulation around the sundial, and third to point the guest to the front door which, as you pan left coming through the restricted breezeway, anchors your eye to the front door... for a sense of hirearchy in the facade of the home.

Page 18: Interior Design and Architecture Undergraduate Portfolio

senior seminar I&II

Page 19: Interior Design and Architecture Undergraduate Portfolio

senior seminar I&IIOriginally, the home contained 3422 usable square feet. In total, I incorporated 935 square feet by adding and subtracting floor space from the plan on all three levels, to give a grand total of 4357 usable square feet in my design solution. On the upper level, I subtracted a full one-third of the original floor plan, giving the full ceiling height to the great room below. Although I eliminated three bedrooms on the upper level, I felt it justifiable to have a total of four larger bedrooms on multipal levels to facilitate a home of this size, by adding additional square footage in the in-law suite on the lower level. Additionally, the stair tower has been shifted from it’s location on the original plan to the column bay closest to the chimney, which is a more logical location with the reconfiguration of the upper level and main entryway. Finally, the last big change on this upper level lies in the master bedroom suite, which has been reconfigured to allow for a perfect 50/50 split between master bedroom and bathroom.

Page 20: Interior Design and Architecture Undergraduate Portfolio

senior seminar I&II

becasue this home is located on a private corner lot, i want to enhance the progression and view lines that the guest or homeowner might experience when approacing the home. immediately, in the top left view, you notice a partial fence that somewhat obstructs the direct view of the home. utilizing a “corten cattail fence”, the fins act as a partial view obstruction, while adding architectural and sculptural detail to the partial perimeter of the home.

in keeping with the idea of compression and expansion, i will can create an enclosed breezeway to heighten the sense of hirearchy within a short period of time as you move along the driveway. the ceiling of the breezeway [as well as all overhangs on the exterior] contains a series of 5’ x 6’ square punches to all light to reflect down onto the material below... in this case, it highlights the corten panels which frame out the breezeway.

rockbridge marketing firm

concept: the modern day interstate system that we all know today contains a series of clean and sleak roadways that connect the traveler to points A and B. it contains streamline properties as well, with the integration of on and off ramps, merging points, and tunnels/bridges that alow you to move with and interrupt the flow of the existing landscape. in addition, there is a more designed and architectural element added to the interstate system, which is the harsh angles and material integration/manipulation is introduced with the involvement of bridges into this interstate infrastructure.

as it relates to the marketing firm model, the big picture idea is drawn from an eight lane highway. once the project is presented to the firm, the idea is then condenced, lane by lane, to a simplified and concise two lane road. idea is then presented and made into a reality, while the two lane road grows to it’s original form. moving through this space, a series of convergance and divergence points are created and overcome as the user moves through the space.

corporate resort headquarters

after carefully selecting omni as the client inspiration for the final studio project of our junior year, the concept began to develop.

like a well designed office space, the composition of the shoreline must adapt to the changing needs of it’s built and natural environment. the goal of this space is to mimic the adaptive characteristics that omni employs when designing casually luxurious experiences for it’s guests on a global scale. by linking the site to it’s natural environment, they create an overall cohesive built world able to fortify, adjust, and sustain itself against the impact of the natural world. sp2013

mobile healthcare unit, er

this mobile healthcare unit is dedicated to the emergency disaster relief efforts critical to situations calling for an emergency room, when a hospital is not easily accessible. these units would serve as a instant e.r., servicing minor inguries in a disaster situation. when a more serious medical situation is assessed, the injured patient can be quickly taken care of in the operating room on site.

versatility is key in this operation simply because the fleet must be able to service the size of the disaster. if it is a smaller scenario, the unit is able to be simplified to it’s most basic form, trailer 1. as the situation grows, the fleet will also be able to grow accordingly, simply by adding more and more trailers to the basic unit, potentially creating a massive space capable of servicing mass volumes of injured patients.

midwife center of pittsburgh

for this large addition to the existing midwife center of pittsburgh, we were tasked to add a variety of rooms to the small scale program of the existing space. in designing this space, the main concept quickly became the openness and connectivity that is felt with nature, and how it impacts the interior environment. the connectivity and flow continues through the addition and merges effortlessly into the existing building, due to the lack of obstructions between the two structures both horizontally as well as vertically. by centrally planing the rooms around the inward facing courtyard, there is now the opportunity for every essential room in this building to have a clear view into an outdoor space, which allows the user to feel certain connectivity with nature. clerestory windows, glazed curtain walls, retracting wall panels and an open courtyard allow for this addition to be a functional yet formational for series of spaces which connect effortlesssly to nature.

sustainable cottage

for this lighting design project, major sustainability factors were addressed and applied to the residential design of this home. with “net zero” as the goal for this project, exterior factors including rainwater retention, green spaces, and wind harvesting were studied, in addition to the sun’s patterns and the effect it has on the interior conditions of the home. with the small footprint in regards to overall square footage, we (as a group) chose to utilize shipping containers as the primary method of building construction with a few modifications. through the use of clerestory windows, large walls of glazing and a glass-enclosed stairwell, we manipulated how the sunlight enters and moves through the space in order to achieve high efficiency ratings in regards to home design. as site is important in any home, we studied how the sun moves and impacts the home, so we oriented the building in a way that is beneficial to the space in regards to heat absorbtion, retention, and exhaustion.

cardboard chair

cardboard, as we know, is a very environmentally friendly material when obtained responsibly, by taking the material out of the recycling stream entirely. cardboard is a flexible material in terms of how it can bem manipulated into a series of layers and shapes in order to create a structurally sound compound object. our inspiration for this chair is derived from the works of richard rogers and his focus on the structural integrity of the project he is designing. in order to further develop our concept, we studied a project called “lloyd’s register”, located in london, england designed by richard rogers. this chair combines from function with an overall aesthetically pleasing form taken from the actual structure of this chair.

concept: by studying the lloyd’s register, we have been inspired by the structure of the building as the main focus of the design. essentially, the complex structure of the chair focuses on the architecture of the chair; which also poses as the design. this chair ultimately bridges a simply complex interrelation of form and function into one cohesive element; which is our chair.

cardboard chair

product information

name : Julianna Sneath I am a from La Jose, PA; northeast of Pittsburgh. I transferred from Penn State Altoona, and am a freshmen in the interior design program. I enjoy being inspired by an idea and transforming my inspiration into a practical and aesthetically pleasing design.

“Good design is a lot like clear thinking made visual.” –Edward Tufte

name : Howard Fugitt I’m a 20 year old sophomore (freshmen ID) from Canonsburg, PA... south of Pittsburgh. I am an Interior Design student because I love expressing my creative and tactical skills in my design projects and conveying the ideas I have in my head to my potential client or audience.

“Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.” –Joe Sparano

dimensions

“Förbrylla Struktur” (puzzle structure) Cardboard, as we know, is a very environmentally friendly material. Having said that, using this material as the substance for our chair design would also imply that we are also environmentally conscious by taking this material out of the recycling stream entirely. Cardboard is a flexible material in terms of how it can be manipulated into a series of layers and shapes; which poses a challenge to convey our concept and it’s impact on our design. Our inspiration for this chair is derived from the works of Richard Rogers and his focus on the structural integrity of the product he is designing. In order to further develop our concept which is inspired by a project called “Lloyd’s Register” located in London, England. This chair combines function with an overall aesthetically pleasing form taken from the actual structure of the chair. We believe this is what makes our chair a successful product.

PERSPECTIVE

Concept : The inspiration for our chair is derived from concepts exhibited in Richard Rogers works. The themes he exhibits in all of his designs really puts the structure of the product in the spotlight and lets the form really be created from the structural integrity of that product. Essentially, the complex structure of the chair focuses on the architecture of the chair; which also poses as the design. This chair ultimately bridges a simply complex interrelation of form and function into one cohesive element; which is our chair.
