LENT – A GOOD TIME TO PRAY

Lent is traditionally a time when Christianstake stock of themselves spiritually. They setaside extra time for prayer. So there you are, tentatively wanting to pray... Here are somehelpful things to remember as you settle downto it:

People have been praying since Adam had agrandson named Enosh. At least the Bibletells us in Genesis 4:26 that it was during hisdays when ‘men began to call on the name ofthe Lord’ . They have been doing it ever since.

People have been answered by God sinceGenesis, too. But if you want to read somebeautiful prayers – and answers to them, browse through the Psalms. Again and againthe psalmist writes:

‘the Lord heard my cry’.

So – what do you need to bring to prayer? Just the tiniest amount of faith that God is eventhere.... Jesus assures us that even faith as bigas a tiny mustard seed will be effective.

What gives you the right to come beforeAlmighty God? Jesus does. The Bible is clearthat ‘there is one mediator between God andmen, the man Jesus Christ’. (1 Tim 2:5)

The Bible makes clear that God does not standon ceremony – he wants our personal, spontaneous prayers. Jesus was very matter offact about it: ‘When you pray, go into yourroom, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who seeswhat is done in secret, will reward you.’ (Matthew 6:6)

The Bible assures us that prayer will bring usgood things: ‘we may receive mercy and findgrace to help us in our time of need’. (Hebrews4:16)

Above all, prayer must be made with a pureheart. ‘If I had cherished sin in my heart, theLord would not have listened.’ (Psalm 66:18) That simply means that if you know you aredoing something wrong, and intend to keepright on doing it, don’t waste your timepraying.

Finally, what can be the results of your prayersthis Lent? Well, here are seven, for starters....

Joy and deep happiness. (John 16:24)

Relief from your worry, stress and tension (Philippians 4:6,7)

Wisdom and more mental clarity (James 1:5,6)

Protection and deliverance from temptations(Matthew 26:41)

An ability to share the Good News of Jesus toother people (Matthew 9:38)

Strength to persevere when you feel underspiritual attack (Ephesians 6:18)

A growing thankfulness to God, who is worthyof all glory (Revelation 4:11)

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOXES

We are pleased to report that the 105 Christmas Shoeboxes we sent to Operation Christmas Child wereamong 181,409 delivered from the UK to children inBelarus. Through these shoe box gifts we have been able toshow children around the world, living in difficultsituations, that they are loved and not forgotten. Manyof these children will never have received a gift in theirlife before. A mother whose children received shoeboxes told OCC this story:

“There are four children in my family - two daughtersand two sons. My husband was tragically killed in acar accident in 2000. Ever since the children smiled

very seldom, and the shoe boxes caused so much joyand many smiles that it made me cry because of joyand happiness that filled my heart. There were somany useful things in those shoe boxes for our familyand children, for example, toys, sweets, soap, toothpaste and brushes, stationery, and so forth, forwhich please receive my thanks and appreciation onmy behalf and my children. Thank you very much fortheir smiles and joy - to you and to the Lord.” We wish to thank the generous members and friends ofTrinity and we thank God for all the contributions tothe Shoe box appeal and for helping us to share God’slove with so many needy and disadvantaged childrenat Christmas.

MOTHERING SUNDAY4th Sunday in Lent

There is an old Jewish saying: God could not beeverywhere, and therefore He made mothers.

Mother Church, Mother Earth, Mother of the Gods -our human mothers - all of them have been part of thecelebration of ‘Mothering Sunday’ - as the fourthSunday in Lent is affectionately known. It has beencelebrated in the UK since at least the 16th century.

In Roman times, great festivals were held every Springto honour Cybele, Mother of all the Gods.

Other pagan festivals in honour of Mother Earth werealso celebrated. With the arrival of Christianity, thefestival became one honouring Mother Church. During the Middle Ages, young people apprenticed to

craftsmen or working as ‘live-in’ servants wereallowed only one holiday a year on which to visit theirfamilies - which is how ‘Mothering Sunday’ got itsname. This special day became a day of familyrejoicing, and the Lenten fast was broken. In someplaces the day was called Simnel Day, because of thesweet cakes called simnel cakes traditionally eaten onthat day.

In recent years the holiday has changed and in manyways now resembles the American Mothers’ Day, withfamilies going out to Sunday lunch and generallymaking a fuss of their mother on the day.

THE ANNUNCIATION

This beautiful event (Luke 1.26-38) took place inNazareth, when Mary is already betrothed to Joseph. The Archangel Gabriel comes to Mary, greets her ashighly favoured, tells her not to be afraid, that she willbear a son Jesus, and that her elderly cousin Elizabethis already pregnant (with John the Baptist).

The church calendar is never quite as neat as somewould like it. To celebrate the Annunciation, alsoknow as Lady Day, on 25 March does indeed place theconception of Jesus exactly nine months from his birthon 25th December, but the latter part of March almostinevitably falls during Lent. But the birth and death ofJesus are intrinsically linked - he was born to die, andthus fulfil God’s purposes.

The Annunciation is a significant date in the Christiancalendar - it is one of the most frequent depicted inChristian art. Gabriel’s gracious strength and Mary’shumble dignity have inspired many artists. CertainlyMary’s response to the angel has for centuries been anexample of good faith in practice - humility, enquiry ofGod, and trusting acceptance in his will for her life.

THE MALAWI FLOODS

Christian Aid is providing emergency assistance todeluged communities in Malawi, in the aftermath ofthe worst floods the country has seen in nearly twodecades. More than 630,000 people have beenaffected, with 120,000 of these displaced by thetorrential rain and flooding that recently hit thecountry’s southern districts, washing away homes, livestock, crops and roads.

Christian Aid partners are working to provide 40,000people in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts with accessto clean water, toilet facilities and temporary shelter. Existing water sources such as boreholes and wellshave been damaged or swept away, as have manypublic and household latrines. As many homes havebeen destroyed, 1,800 tarpaulins have been distributedto provide emergency shelter for up to 9,000 people.

Christian Aid’s Malawi Country Manager, MacDuffPhiri, described the floods as “catastrophic”. He said:“The impact has been huge. The majority of peoplehere live on less than US$1 a day, and everything theyown has been washed away. It means they need torebuild their lives, which isn’t going to be easy.” Malawi is among the world’s poorest countries.

Last month’s puzzle solution

Some people think reconciliation is a soft option, that it means papering over the cracks.But the biblical meaning means looking facts in the face, and it can be very costly;

it cost God the death of his own son. Archbishop Desmond Tutu

MOTHER’S REWARD

A man was decorating his new den and decided it wasa good place to display all the awards he and his twosons had won at various athletic competitions. Whenhe had filled two whole walls, he remarked to his wifethat it was a shame she had no awards to contribute.

The following day, she produced, neatly framed, thebirth certificates of their two sons, and added them tothe display.

EXPENSIVE BOAT

A minister was planning an Easter pilgrimage to theHoly Land, and was aghast when he found it wouldcost him £50 an hour to rent a boat on the Sea ofGalilee. He protested to the travel agent that the costwas ridiculous. “That might be true,” replied the travelagent, “but you have to take into account that the Seaof Galilee is water on which our Lord himself walked.”

“Well, at £50 an hour for a boat, I am not surprised!”

GIFT DAY

It has long been our custom to hold a ‘Gift Day’ atEaster. This is the chance for all to give a gift to Godfor His goodness to us and to enable us to moveforward as His Holy Spirit leads us.

There have been many discussions about our Churchand the fitness of our lovely buildings to best serve theneighbourhood in which we are placed. Some thoughthas been given to making our kitchen larger. A lot ofthought has been given to making our whole premisesmore open and accessible to those with special needs.

We are in the process of inviting an architect -surveyor to use his wisdom to show us how this couldhappen.

Money does not grow on trees. If our Lord does showus a way to improve the work we do for Him inTrinity, how ready are we to rise to the challenge?

Could this years gift day, which is Palm Sunday, be anindication of our willingness to make changes as Heand the feeling of Church Meeting decide is correct forTrinity?

Look out for a letter from the Church Secretary withfuller details of the way we can all give on Gift Day tothe glory of the one we all serve.
