More
Staff and students have been extremely busy over the
last couple of weeks with a range of educational
activities. On Tuesday 8th March, we celebrated
International Women’s Day and recognised the
achievements of many great women in history. Our
guest speaker, Sarah Nixon, also drew our attention to
how far we still have to go to achieve equality for
women, especially in countries where women are still
marginalised and much less fortunate than women in
our own culture. Thank to you all the students and staff
who supported this event.
The Junior Secondary Meet and Greet session on
Wednesday evening was another huge success.
Despite the downpour, many staff, parents and
students crowded onto the deck to meet each
other. Thank you to the parents who were able to
attend this event to meet with our teachers. We
appreciate your support. A huge thank you to the
students who assisted our wonderful Junior
Secondary staff with this event – the F1 in Schools
team, the senior Hospitality team, the ANZAC tour
group, and Tate and Jasper Obst for their
entertainment.
Recently, the Education Department’s iPad expert, Bob Rodgers,
flew to Mackay to deliver an iPad Professional Development
session for all schools. He also spent time assisting Junior
Secondary students in the classroom and delivering sessions to
Mackay North staff. Science staff also had the opportunity to
connect their students digitally with the IntoScience presentations
(pictured).
Staff across curriculum areas are engaging our students with a
range of innovative practices through digital technologies in the
classroom. As the funding for the previous government’s 1-to-1 Laptop program has ceased, all students are
required to bring their own device (BYOx) to school. While students in Junior Secondary are expected to
bring iPads, students in Year 10 to 12 can bring a laptop or an iPad. It is essential that once the device is
brought to school students take it to the IT department in the library to ensure they are able to utilise school
resources including the school internet. Last year, the IT department ran a number of BYOx sessions for
parents. If you missed these sessions and require more information, please go to our website or contact our
Head of IT, John Doolan.

Exam Block 16/03/2016 – 22/03/2016
Our first senior exam block will run from next Wednesday to the following Tuesday. Students will be expected to attend
school for:
their exams.
for RSA and RGS training if students are enrolled in Cert II Hospitality or Cert II Tourism – full days Friday 18th
and Monday 21st.
if their teacher has specifically asked them to attend to complete Senior Art.
if their teacher has asked them to come in and complete certificate competencies.
Students must be in full school uniform. Students who are unable to complete their exams in the allocated time slot
because of significant other commitments need to see Mr Beanland to organise when they will complete their exams. If
students are ill and unable to do their exams in the required timeslots, the school should be notified and a medical
certificate is required to justify the rescheduling of the exam. The exam timetable is in this newsletter, so please make
sure all students are aware of the times that they must be present for their exams.
Following exam block, both Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th March will be normal school days for all Year 11 and
12 students. Some students absent with Work Experience, the Year 12 Legal Studies students will be in Brisbane,
students who sign up for the ‘Dream Job’ workshop will be attending that on Wednesday 23rd, but all other Year 11
and 12 students are expected to be at school for regular lessons on these last 2 days of term.
Dream Job
This is an excellent opportunity for students to lift their spirits and dream forward to the future, following exam block.
Motivational Speaker and Life Coach: Melissa Schembri presents her full day ‘Dream Job’ workshop on Wednesday
23rd March. (Advertising brochure is included in this newsletter) Students who have participated in the past have found
the day to be inspiring, thought provoking, enjoyable, and thoroughly worthwhile. This is a personal development
opportunity not to be missed. Just $20! Please enrol by paying ASAP at the office.
Subject Changes for Year 11
We spend a lot of time and energy trying to help incumbent Year 11 students select the best subjects for themselves in
Year 11. However, sometimes the reality is that students find themselves in subjects that are not appropriate. If
students are in the situation, they need to investigate possible subject changes immediately after exam block, on 23rd
and 24th March. This can result in them being ready to ‘hit the ground running’ for the start of Term 2.
2016 Next Step survey
The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in the previous year.
The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices
made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.
Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to
complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office to complete
the survey. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer
with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.
Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2016.

KMEIA CHORAL FESTIVAL
The vocal group’s first performance for the year is at
the KMEIA Choral Festival which is being held at
the Mackay Entertainment Centre next Monday
evening. This is always a very popular event and again
this year two renowned guest choral conductors are
conducting the primary and community choirs - Ms
Jenny Moon and Anthony Young.
On Monday night, our students will need to be at the
MECC at 5.15pm for final rehearsals. The concert
begins at 7.30pm and should be finished by 9.00pm.
Tickets for the public are available at the MECC for
$24.50/ $12.00 concession – reminder that these
always sell out very quickly! Secondary parents who
miss out on tickets may watch the MECC rehearsal on
Monday.
Our vocal group students will also need to be at the Mackay
Entertainment Centre on Sunday afternoon for the important
concert rehearsal. They need to arrive at 3.45pm and the
rehearsal will finish at 7.00pm. Students should wear
comfortable, smart casual clothes and bring WATER with
them to the rehearsals.
Full cultural uniform is needed for the concert and students
will need to bring their music in the black display folder which
has been supplied.
ANNUAL VOCAL GROUP
LEVY
Sincere thanks to all families who have already paid
the annual $20 vocal group levy for the year and
returned the permission form. This is needed from all
vocal group members before the end of March, please.
MARCHING BAND TRIP TO THE STATE ANZAC
PARADE
It is extremely pleasing to see how popular the
marching band trip to the State Anzac Parade still is,
with all of the eighty-eight seats already taken. This will
again be a very enjoyable, memorable trip and the
marching band staff members are very pleased with
the progress that has been made by the students at
the recent rehearsals. Just a reminder to all Brisbane
students that there are two mandatory rehearsals remaining
on Tuesday afternoon, March 22 from 3.00 – 4.00pm and
after the holidays, on Friday afternoon April 15 from 3.00 –
4.30pm.
All outstanding paperwork and the remaining $380.00 should
be paid by Monday, April 11.

Mackay North High is a Safe School
Mackay North takes pride in our commitment to provide a safe, inclusive environment for each and every one of our
students. In line with this commitment, last year we signed up to join the Safe Schools Coalition. There is currently a
considerable amount of misinformation about this program in the media.
The Safe Schools program, which is convened by the Foundation of Young Australians and funded by the Australian
Government, aims to ensure all students, including same sex attracted, intersex, and gender diverse students have the
opportunity to learn and succeed in a supportive environment that is free from discrimination.
Our participation in the program provides us free access to expert training, resources and advice, but importantly, does
not require any changes to our curriculum, school policies or procedures. Any participation in the program by students is
completely voluntary.
The Queensland Teacher’s Union (QTU) is also proudly supportive of the quality work of the Safe Schools Coalition.
We have joined the program simply because we want everyone in our school community to be happy and healthy, and
we understand that students do well socially and academically when they feel safe within their classrooms, school
grounds and within their school’s culture.

Junior Secondary Students Head IntoScience
Last week the Junior Secondary science students
were given the opportunity to experience an
IntoScience launch lesson. This lesson ran through the
basics of how to use the applications as well as how to
earn enquiry points, complete quizzes in a real-time
challenge against other students, build an avatar and
complete quests in the different worlds. Students were
encouraged to use this application at home and in the
classroom. I would like to publicly thank IntoScience
and their presenters, Emma, Alex and Andrew for
coming into our school to deliver such an excellent
application that really seemed to get students into
Science.

On Tuesday morning the Year 7 &12 girls gathered to celebrate International Women’s

Interhouse Swimming Carnival
After a hectic but enjoyable 2 days for the 2016 edition of the Interhouse Swimming Carnival, the splashing has settled
and the winners have been crowned.
The first day of the swimming carnival was held on Friday 19th
February, with the junior students taking to the pool first.
Lead confidently by the House Captains, all students got involved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves – whether it was in
the swimming races, the novelty events or the War Cry competition (taken out by Fitzgerald). Once the waves of
competition had subsided, it was a nervous wait to see who had taken out the title for the Junior Championship in 2016,
and take an early lead in to the Senior Carnival. It was announced that Spiller had won the Junior Championship for the
second year in a row, closely followed by Norris, then Fitzgerald and Bagley finished in 4th
place.
The final day of competition saw the Seniors thrash around the pool on Friday 26th February in order to gain house
supremacy early on in the year. With the pool full of Dragons, Dolphins, Frogs and Tigers, it was an exciting day with
everyone giving their all for their house and ensuring an enjoyable day for all. At the conclusion of the races, Bagley were
crowned Senior Champions, well ahead of Spiller, Norris and Fitzgerald.
To come up with the overall winning house for the carnival, both the Junior & Senior scores were added together. With
Spiller taking out the Juniors and Bagley taking out the Seniors, it was declared that the overall winners were Spiller,
followed by Norris, Bagley and Fitzgerald.
Thank you to all of the students who were involved in the 2016 Swimming Carnival, you provided a great atmosphere.
Thank you to the newly elected House Captains – you displayed great enthusiasm and leadership, your efforts made the
day run smoothly. A final thank you to the staff for your support in running the day – from recording, starting or being
there to support the students – your efforts were muchly appreciated by the students.
Attention now focuses on to the next Interhouse competition – the Cross Country. This will be held in Friday 29th April.
Training will commence shortly for any interested students (Yrs 7 – 12) – this will be advertised on daily notices. Students
will need to collect a form from the HPE staffroom and return prior to training. Any student turning 12 years old and
wanting to participate in the Northern Suburbs Cross Country must participate in this training.

An extract from Z-Letter
February 2016 | Issue No. 6
Dear parents
At North High we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be
difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an
important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying
involves everyone.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is
important to allow your child to tell you all about the
situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions
to get more details if you need to: who, what, where,
when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about
your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more
distress to your child.
2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children
blame themselves and this may make them feel even
worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard
to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or
‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe
at school; that’s not fair at all’.
3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want
you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid
jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want
to protect your child, helping them to find their own
solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have
some power in the situation.
4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies.
The website has tips and ideas for different bullying
situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to
help your child feel more confident.
5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure
them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your
child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you
have a concern about your child’s safety.
6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so
check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is
important.
If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying.
No Way! website for parents. As well, please contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our
