The Sentinel Leader Wednesday, February 1, 1967 AjJROUND THE <| •UbTOWN'^H LOCAL HAPPENINGS PHONE TU7-9008 Walter Bloomer of Centennial Avenue and his daughter, Mrs. Ivan Taylor of Port Sheldon (W. Ottawa) attended the funeral of Mr. Bloomer's nephew, Herbert Miller at Williamston on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. John Colby of Gunn Street are now wintering in Florida. Their address is 6601 S. West Shore Blvd, 8 B Road, Tampa 16 Florida 33616. Mr. and Mrs. William Day, Elm Street, returned home Sunday after spending two and one-hali months in Bradenton, Florida. Jack Davis Musk Fund Established Upon request of the wife and family of the late Jack M. Davis, music director at Sparta High School from 1943 to 1964, a com- mittee consisting of William H. DeHart, Ed Lane, Plynn Pennock, and Robert Stiles was formed to explore the possibilities of set- ting up a scholarship fund for promising music students want- ing to further their study, but not having adequate financial means to do so. Mrs. Davis and the family de- sired that this fund be perpetual so that many students intently in- terested in music as a career would be able to utilize it, and also that it would not be forgot- ten. Thus, the idea of a "loan fund' came about to insure its continuity. Persons wishing to contribute who have not already done so may send money to the "Jack Davis Music Scholarship Loan Fund'' in care of Gordon Vandenhout at the Sparta State Bank, Sparta, Mrs. Lyle Fonger, 69 Alma St., and her 3-year old grandson, David Sellon, left Saturday for David's home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. David has spent the past three weeks with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fonger. Mrs. Fonger will visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David (Patrk ia) Sellon, for a few days. Joseph Berdan Taken by Death Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Hessel Chapel in Sparta for Joseph William Ber- dan, age 63, of 25 Orchard Drive, Sparta, who passed away very suddenly on Sunday, Jan- uary 29, in Sparta. Mr. Berdan was born on Feb- ruary 7, 1902 , in Hamilton, Texas, and received his education in Grand Rapids where he attended Union High School. He was a veteran of World War I. He was employed as a plater for the Lear-Siegler Corp. in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the Spar- ta Methodist Church. On July 23, 1966, he was mar- ried to the former Olive W. Witt in Sparta. Besides his wife, Olive, Mr. Berdan is survived by one son, Lloyd of Sparta; two daughters, Mrs. R. Allen (Constance) Whi- taker of Grand Rapids and Mrs. James (Sally Hollebeck, J r . of Sparta; 8 grandchildren; and two brothers, George of Fort Worth, Texas, and Chauncey of Pontiac- The Rev. Francis C. Jo- hannides conducted the services. Burial was in Garfield Park Cem- etery, Grand Rapids. Memorials to Mr. Berdan are being received by the Sparta Methodist Church. To Tell the Truth..• SATISFYING THE NEED OF MAN A story is told of a shipwrecked crew who had been drifting for days in a small boat, suffering the horrors of thirst. In the extremity of their suffering, when all hope had been abandoned, a vessel was seen bearing towards them. When sufficiently near, they called out as well as their parched throats permitted, "wa- ter—water". 0pm Xgtte/i from BERNARD R. HESSEL Dear friends. Auto and other modes of travel are causing deaths to occur more frequently away from home. If your family should have this unfortu- nate experience, we suggest that you phone us, collect, to assist you in this crisis. Through our various fun eral associations, we ca properly arrange for the care and return of the de- ceased for funeral service. Respectfully, m m FUNERAL HOME The men on the deck of the rescuing ship called back, "Dip your buckets ove r the side". At first the shipwrecked crew thought it was a mocking answer but later they learned they had drifted into that part of water where the mighty Amazon bears its fresh waters far out to sea. They were actually floating in an ocean of plenty and wore not aware of the fact. Just so modern man with all his fear and anxieties is groping about in uncertainty, while the call of God goes forth, "Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) The ocean of refreshing water is near at hand. Psalm 145:18 says "The Lord is nigh to all that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth". The need of man lies deeper than he realizes. The Bible says: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God". (Matthew 4:44) Jesus instructs us in these words, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven". (Matthew 6:33) The great problem of man to- day is that a serious spiritual starvation is in effect. The pro- blem can only be overcome by the full satisfying knowledge of God and this can only be attained by receiving Christ Jesus as your personal Saviour. Water! Water! God says "These are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that be- lieving ye might have life through His Name." (John 20:31) Dip your buckets deep in the Words of Life. Henry Hoekstra, Pastor Trinity Christian Reformed Church Final Rites for Raymond Chanco Funeral services were held at the Hayward Funeral Home in Casnovia on Friday for Raymond J. Chance, aged 62, of 154 Pro- basco Street, Casnovia, who passed away on January 25. Mr. Chance was born on May 12, 1904, in Westfield, Indiana. He was married to the former Eunice E. Cole on September 7, 1936, in Indiana and has re- sided in Casnovia for the past 20 years.
