Purpose of the Module In this session, participants will familiarize themselves with the SMART Board™ interactive whiteboard and SMART Notebook™ software, important pieces of equipment in an eMINTS classroom. The SMART Board has many features that can truly enhance an inquiry-based learning environment. Knowing how to use SMART software, which works with many other applications, makes a teacher even more effective at the board.

Expected Outcomes • Teachers use the basic features of the interactive whiteboard and related

software on a regular basis during classroom instruction.

• Teachers encourage students to use the interactive whiteboard and related software for tasks that promote thinking and learning.

Essential Question How does technology affect change?

Session Question How can technology support teaching and learning?

Copyright Information Find SMART Notebook software at the following website: http://www.smarttech.com. The downloading and use of software from the SMART Technologies website is subject to the terms of the Software License Agreement that accompanies the product. Downloading and installing SMART software for use with any other manufacturer’s whiteboard violates the agreement. Educators may install SMART Board and SMART Notebook software on student machines. A watermark will appear on all student work until it is opened on the SMART Board teacher workstation. Some features of SMART Board software, including SMART Recorder and SMART Video Player, may not work on student machines because they are not connected to a SMART Board.

SMART Board Components The SMART Board system consists of three pieces of equipment: an interactive whiteboard, a teacher workstation and a projector. All three pieces of equipment must function and work together to use all of the interactive features of the SMART Board. The SMART Board does not require its own power source. Instead, it receives power from the computer to which it is connected. An indicator light located at the bottom right of the Pen Tray indicates the status of the SMART Board. If the light is flashing between red and green, the Pen Tray is powering up. If the light is a steady red, the SMART Board has power, but no direct link with the computer has been established. If the light is a steady green, the SMART Board is ready for use. Two main cables connect the teacher workstation and SMART Board-related hardware. The first is a VGA connection, responsible for the display on the SMART Board. A cable between the computer’s VGA port and the projector’s VGA port makes this connection. Connecting the computer to the projector places the image from the computer’s monitor onto the SMART Board screen when the projector comes on. A teacher can make any adjustments to the way the projected image appears on the SMART Board screen by accessing the controls located on the projector or through the projector’s remote control. The second main cable connection is a serial or USB cable that links the computer’s CPU and the SMART Board. This connection enables the SMART Board to function like a large touchpad. When the computer is turned on and the indicator light at the bottom of the Pen Tray is green, a user can drag a finger or SMART Board stylus across the board to act as a mouse. An image does not need to be projected on the board for this function to work. As long as a green-light link exists between the computer and the board, the SMART Board controls mouse movements. If the board is not interactive and displays a red light in the Pen Tray, no link between the computer CPU and SMART Board has been established. A teacher can control mouse movements through the SMART Board even when the projector is turned off and not projecting the computer screen on the SMART Board.

Input Methods To add information to a document displayed on the SMART Board, teachers and students must use an input method. The SMART Board is equipped with two input methods. Users may operate the onscreen keyboard or use a special pen or their finger. Onscreen Keyboard The SMART Board has an onscreen keyboard with the same functionality as a regular keyboard. To access the onscreen keyboard, press the onscreen-keyboard button located on the Pen Tray or click on the keyboard button in SMART Tools. A keyboard that looks like a standard computer keyboard will appear. Use the keyboard to type text by tapping the appropriate keys. Tap the Send button to place the typewritten text on the board.

The SMART Board has several other custom-input options: Number Pad, Write Lines, Simple and Simple Caps. To access these options, click on the down arrow located in the upper-left corner of the keyboard screen. Number Pad The Number Pad resembles a scientific calculator. It can complete basic math functions and a few advanced functions as well.

Simple or Simple Caps Choosing Simple or Simple Caps displays an alphabetical layout of the keyboard with the numbers in the bottom row.

The Human Mouse With the interactive SMART Board, the user acts as the mouse. Touch the SMART Board to bring the cursor to the point of contact. To open an application, double-click the icon with a finger. Use a firm touch; it does not hurt the board. SMART Board Pens The SMART Board offers many options for writing with electronic ink directly on the whiteboard: the SMART Board styluses, closed markers, dull pointers or fingers. Note: To ensure the life expectancy of the board, use markers ONLY if the lid is secured. Do not use pointers with rough edges or sharp points that could break the skin on the board.

SMART Hardware Settings The SMART Hardware Settings has many functions. The upper half of the window remains constant and shows all of the SMART products attached to a computer. A hyperlink at the bottom of the screen starts a wizard that will enable the location and connection of a SMART Board to a computer.

The lower half of the main settings window has several utilities to maximize the use of the SMART Board. Other utilities accessible through the drop-down menu include the following:

• Orientation/Alignment • Mouse Settings • Arrange Video Output • Advanced Settings • Set Up Icon Strips • Hardware Information and Settings

The Alignment/Orientation Precision utility and Pen Tray settings listed in the drop-down box are also accessible from the Control Panel. The next section of the module discusses them. The following material covers utilities only accessible through the SMART Hardware Settings window. Pen and Button Settings The SMART Board Pen Tray consists of an eraser, four colored styluses, two built-in buttons and the indicator light. The Pen Tray knows which stylus to use by sensing which part of the tray is empty. The last stylus or eraser picked up will determine the active function on the board. If the teacher picks up the red pen, followed by the eraser and the green pen, anything written on the board next will be in green. If a stylus is ever lost, anything that fits in the tray can take its place; a new set of styluses is unnecessary. The Pen Tray comes with default settings for stylus colors and widths. To change these settings, open the Control Panel and select SMART Hardware Settings. To manipulate the width or color of a stylus, click on the appropriate symbol. This will open a Properties window.

In the Line Style window, customize pen color, line thickness, endpoint style and line style for electronic ink. Set line endpoints to start and end with arrows, dots, squares or diamonds. Set line style as a smooth continuous line, a dotted line, dashed line or various combinations of dots and dashes.

Select the Fill Effects button at the top of the Properties window. The transparency settings allow a see-through effect for lines. Use the slider bar to adjust the level of transparency. When the desired setting is achieved, click the Save Tool Settings button at the bottom of the Properties window.

Selecting the Eraser button on the Pen Tray window yields options for the size of the eraser. Set thick or thin eraser paths with this option.

The Mouse/Keyboard button opens a window with options—such as right-click, print screen and so forth—for the mouse and keyboard buttons located on the Pen Tray. Use the drop-down box to select actions for these buttons. Click OK to complete the setting changes.

Orientation/Alignment Since the SMART Board interacts with the computer, the two must be synchronized so the computer knows where touches on the SMART Board correspond. Orient the SMART Board to accomplish this synchronization. Teachers can orient the SMART Board in several ways. If the orientation of the SMART Board is severely off, press the two Pen Tray buttons, switching the board to orientation mode. Alternatively, click the SMART Board icon located in the system tray in the lower right-hand corner of the screen to open SMART Tools. Click Orient, switching the board to orientation mode. Selecting Orient/Align the SMART Product from the Control Panel yields options regarding the number of points to use in SMART Board orientation. The SMART Board defaults to a Quick (4 points) orientation. Consider using the Standard (9 points) or Fine (20 points) settings. An additional Wide Standard (12 points) is available for greater orientation precision on the wider 690 Series SMART Board. The more points used during orientation, the more exact the touch of the board will be. If the SMART Board is mounted to the wall and the projector is on a stationary ceiling mount, frequent orientation is unnecessary; however, students love to touch the SMART Board. Consider setting a higher number of orientation points and allowing students to orient the board frequently.

Mouse Settings Customize mouse settings to change various mouse-related functions, such as the size of the area on an icon that will enable double-clicking. Depending on the SMART Board product connected to a computer, a user may enable features such as Hover, Multiple Touch Mode and Mouse Gesture.

Arrange Video Output If a computer connects to multiple SMART products, Arrange Video Output allows a user to control the way the computer screen projects onto multiple SMART Boards. This feature does not typically apply to a classroom setting. Advanced Settings Choosing Advanced Settings will allow a user to calibrate the SMART Board axes. These settings include swapping the axes, flipping an axis or automatically adjusting an axis. In the course of normal use, these settings do not require adjustment. Set Up Icon Strips Icon strips are the toolbars that float on the screen. This utility enables the calibration of the touch sensitivity of an icon strip. For example, a user can recalibrate the touch

sensitivity of the red X that closes an icon strip. The custom-strip setting can create additional icon strips. Hardware Info & Settings The Hardware Info & Settings option displays information on the SMART Board connected to the computer, including the SMART Board software version.

Configure SMART Board Software Selecting the Configure SMART Board Software Tools link on the Control Panel home screen or on the Control Panel sidebar enables the user to configure SMART Board software as desired. Software that can be configured includes: Ink Aware application settings, Ink Layer options, Recorder settings, SMART keyboard settings, Video Player settings and a Display controller.

Ink Aware Application Settings Selecting Ink Aware Application Settings on the Control Panel displays a list of software compatible, in terms of recognizing annotations, with the SMART Board. Aware applications allow a user to write and save annotations (as objects or typed text) directly into documents, spreadsheets and other formats, depending on the program. Aware programs include Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Since all

Gallery items that are used to create backgrounds on SMART Notebook pages are designated with a dog-ear in the lower-right corner of the icon. Pre-made SMART Notebook page icons have a dog-eared right corner. Flash files display an “f” inside a circle in the top-left corner. A sound file includes a “speaker” in the bottom-left corner. Video files have a film strip appearance. Sound Files Place sound files on a SMART Notebook page using the same method as placing clip art on a page. A sound file on a SMART Notebook page will include the speaker in the lower-left corner of the object, just as it did as an icon in the Gallery. To play the sound file, click the speaker icon. Video Files The SMART Notebook Gallery includes several short video clips that can be placed on a SMART Notebook page for viewing. When the video file is inserted on a Notebook page it includes a control bar for replay and sound adjustment as shown in the example.

The video file can be manipulated as an object; however, extensive size enlargement distorts the quality of the video. Flash Files Flash files are objects that have interactive qualities. For example, a digital timer can be placed on a SMART Notebook page that will operate similar to an actual timer and sound an alarm when time has expired. SMART Notebook Backgrounds and Pre-Made Pages SMART Notebook comes with a variety of background and SMART Notebook pages. Backgrounds and pages are similar in that double-clicking a background or page icon inserts the image as a background on a SMART Notebook page. The difference between the two items is that a SMART Notebook page may also include objects that can be manipulated; backgrounds do not.

Using the SMART Board and Notebook in the Classroom eMINTS and eMINTS4ALL teachers have used the SMART Board and Notebook for a variety of purposes in their classrooms. The list that follows provides a sample of activities.

General Ideas Applicable to All Classrooms Brainstorming Give students time for brainstorming sessions with SMART Notebook. After the students have finished, have them drag and drop their brainstormed ideas onto other grouped slides. This process will help the students see that some of their brainstorms are similar and assist them in grouping. Students Presenting the Results of Work Have students use the SMART Board to present their projects. Students can learn from each other through presenting their work on the SMART Board. Students are more aware of mistakes and the quality of work on the big board. Younger students may provide constructive peer feedback using Two Stars and a Wish, two positive comments and one suggested improvement. Alternatively, older students may provide

Page 49: Interactive Whiteboards for Macmelaniekinneyemintspd4ets.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/6/5/24652503/… · Interactive Whiteboards for Mac eMINTS National Center 325 Clark Hall Columbia,

49

the same type of feedback using PMI (Plus, Minus and Interesting). Do the peer feedback before giving the final grade, so students have time to revise their projects. Saving the Display for Future Use Use the SMART Board to display a KWL chart (What I Know; What I Want to Know; What I Learned) the whole class fills out at the beginning of a unit. Fill out the “L” portion later. Print the KWL chart so students have a copy for reference. Save SMART Notebook files as HTML documents for the class website, thus providing an online record for an absent student or for parents who want to know what students are doing during the school day. Student Portfolios Create a SMART Notebook file for each student. Student work in other programs can be attached to the SMART Notebook file via the Attachment side tab. Tutorial Files Students can use SMART Recorder to create files that demonstrate a process or procedure as a tutorial. The tutorial file can be placed in a shared folder for access by other students as needed.

Ideas for Elementary Classrooms Sorting After studying habitats, have each group create a background of the habitat studied. Put all of the slides into one file. Make the last slide a series of animals to be dragged and dropped into the appropriate habitats. Handwriting Recognition Use the handwriting-recognition feature to help students improve their handwriting. Have students write words or phrases on the SMART Board and press the A in the right-hand corner of the text box, committing the handwriting to text. Students can see what the SMART Board thought they wrote. Have students go to Edit and click Undo to revert back to script and see why the board read the writing that way. Remove the writing and have students try again. Scan a piece of handwriting paper for lines to guide the writing. The newest versions of SMART Notebook have templates for handwriting paper and graph paper available. Weather Have students create weather patterns using the Gallery’s weather templates. By drawing and grouping lines, they can add fronts to the pictures, show how the fronts move and insert the appropriate weather along a front. Incorporate their work into a recorded news broadcast. Shapes Put a picture on the SMART Board. Have students outline the shapes they see on the board. Once many of the shapes have been established, remove the picture and the outlines of the shapes will remain. Have students group the shapes and designate criteria for each group.

A Picture as a Thousand Words Put a picture in SMART Notebook. Have students look at the picture carefully to find out what they can infer from it. Working in groups, have students create a story for the picture. For example, show a picture of a large vessel (a barge or ocean cargo ship works well). Have students look at the water and ask the following questions: “Are there objects in the water?” “Can you tell which way the river flows?” “Look at the wake, can you tell which way the vessel is moving?” “Look at the shoreline; can you tell which city or country it is in?” “Can you tell if it is loaded?” “What do you think it is loaded with?” “Why?” Picture Slide Show for an Event Have students take pictures or collect pictures of classroom activities into a folder on the teacher’s hard drive. Make a slide show of these pictures to view on the SMART Board for parent visits, Grandparents’ Day or reviewing a field trip. Group Editing Errors in spelling and grammar are much easier for students to see on the SMART Board. Choose a student who takes suggestions well to present the first PowerPoint presentation to the class. On each screen, stop to have students read carefully and make suggestions for improvement. Emphasize that this exercise is to make the presentation better, not to make the author feel bad. Have students make comments about what they like as well as what needs work. Sequence Pages Use the Capture tool available on the Floating Toolbar to capture sections of a paper, or scanned items. The captured items become movable objects that can be reordered. Students can use this feature to organize ideas that were written by hand on paper and have been scanned into SMART Notebook. Making or Building Words Teachers create a page in SMART Notebook to build words. Each letter for the word is typed individually so that they are displayed as individual objects on the board. The letters are scattered around on the board. Students take turns coming up to the board to move the letters around to build a word they are learning during class. All students can be engaged in the activity by using letter cards or letter tiles in conjunction with the SMART Board. Guess the Covered Word Teachers type sentences for students on a Notebook page. Using the shape and fill tools, the teacher creates a rectangle (or other shape), fills it with color and moves it on top of a word in a sentence. During a lesson students are asked to guess the covered word. As the word is guessed a student removes the shape from the word to reveal the answer. This activity can be modified in various ways and used for various content areas. Daily Oral Language or DOL Teachers type sentences with grammatical and spelling errors for students to correct as a daily oral language lesson. Students are selected to come to the board and make corrections.

Nutrition Display many pictures or words that represent types of foods on the board. Have students work together to plan nutritious meals with these items. Then, have each group drag the items in its meal to form one nutritious meal on the SMART Board. Hidden Adjectives A story is displayed on the SMART Board using SMART Notebook. All of the adjectives in the story are covered with a rectangular shape created with the draw tools and filled in. Students read the story realizing how dull it is without adjectives. To make the text more exciting, students generate adjectives for the hidden text. After they read the story with their adjectives, the hidden text is uncovered so students can compare/contrast their versions with the author’s version. An activity such as this could lead into an introduction of adjectives or other parts of speech based on the words the teacher decides to hide. Pictures Tell a Story Display only pictures for a story on the SMART Board. Ask students to write a story based on what they see occurring in the pictures. Provide time for students to share their stories then read the author’s version of the story that goes with the pictures. Ask students to compare/contrast their stories with the author’s.

Ideas for Secondary Classrooms Archive Class Work Notes and work that are developed during a lesson can be saved and the file labeled with a current date. If a student is absent for an extended length of time, the file developed during class can be e-mailed to the student for review. The student can respond with questions and comments to the teacher through e-mail. Alternatively, saved files can be reopened during class for reference to work that was discussed during a previous class. By using a microphone and the SMART Board Recorder in conjunction with writing on the SMART Notebook, lessons can be recorded with both audio and visual elements. The recorded lessons can be saved and provided to students who would like to review the lessons. Webcast Have students create recorded SMART Board files. By using additional software, recorded SMART Board files can be developed into a Webcast that includes commercials and voice-overs. Geometry and Drawing Tools The drawing tools in SMART Notebook provide geometry teachers with additional features not available on a regular whiteboard or blackboard. Objects created with SMART Notebook drawing tools can be automatically flipped and rotated to meet a variety of needs. Picture Captions Scan and enlarge images such as those from a historical period. Students create speech bubbles for the people in the images appropriate to the historical period.

Foreign Language Games Challenge students to create grammar games using SMART Notebook. Save the file and post it on the Internet so all students in the class can access the file from the classroom, as well as from home (Gibbons, J., personal communication, July 25, 2006).

Ideas for Meeting Diverse Learner Needs The following techniques and practices can be employed when using the SMART Board or SMART Notebook to meet diverse learner needs.

• For students who have motor or dexterity problems, a squishy ball or knuckle can be used on the board to manipulate objects.

• As an alternative for using a note card with a cut-out window to guide student reading, use the SMART Board Spotlight tool. Adjust the spotlight so it is a rectangle that will only display one or two lines of text at a time.

• The Recorder can be used while students are working on the board as a method to analyze student thought processes and assist with IEP, Care Team and parent conferences.

Putting into Practice If desired, ask the eMINTS Instructional Specialist (eIS) to assist with use of the SMART Board or SMART Notebook the first time it is used in the classroom. Implement the activity developed during the professional-development session. Discuss the implementation with the eIS during a classroom visit or at the next professional-development session.

SMART Recorder The SMART Recorder records everything written on the SMART Board in the order and time it is written. If a microphone is connected to the computer, SMART Recorder will also record voice. The board and voice are recorded together into one AVI file or MOV file on a Mac. Use QuickTime Player to play back the file. By default, SMART Recorder records the entire screen. Selecting the drop-down arrow key located next to the Record button (red dot), yields options for recording just a selected window or area. These options reduce the size of the recording file, making it easier to play and store.

The SMART Recorder consists of three buttons: a Record button to begin the recording session, a Pause button to pause the recording temporarily and a Stop button to stop the recording session. The Menu button customizes items including Recording Quality, Video Format and Target Files. Under Target Files, a user can enable the selection of a default directory where SMART Recorder can automatically save files.

Additional Print Options When printing SMART Notebook files the user has the option of printing the pages of the file as thumbnails, handouts or full pages. To access these options follow these steps:

1. Select File > Print from the menu bar. 2. A print window will appear. Select one of the three options (thumbnails,

handouts or full page) displayed on the left side of the window.
