DATA VISUALIZATION

The set of techniques used to turn a set of data into visual insight.

It aims to give the data a meaningful representation by exploiting

the powerful discerning capabilities of the human eye*

Our focus: Interactive visualizations of numeric data (statistics)

PROBLEM STATEMENT

“Upcoming computing capabilities provide a new medium for the invention of graphical methods for data analysis”*

"Some display methods lead to efficient, accurate visual decoding of encoded

information, and others lead to inefficient, inaccurate decoding" **

Research question Which visualizations and interactions are applicable for the

representation of (numeric) statistics in RIP’s?

* Richard A. Becker, William S. Cleveland, and Allan R. Wilks, ‘‘Dynamic Graphics For DataAnalysis,’’ Statistical Science, Vol 2, 1987, pp 355-395.** William S. Cleveland. A model for studying display methods of statistical graphics,

CURRENT STATE OF RESEARCH

• Scientific research on statistical visualizations• Not within the context of RIP• Mostly for geographical visualisations

• Journals• Journal of Statistical Science • Journal of the American Statistical Association

• Keywords:• Dynamic/interactive visualization/graphics• statistical/scientific visualization

HYPOTHESIS

• The enhanced interactive visualizations preferred for the first generation RIP’s do not differ that much from the conventional 2D visualizations used in paper publications.

Adoption of RIP’s is a process (dr. R. van Horik) People are familiar with conventional visualizations

• More data will get available when using enhanced visualizations for RIP’s

More data can be visualized Using visualization tools, sharing data becomes easier Linking of data becomes easier (SURF)

RESEARCH METHOD

• Literature study• About 20 papers

• Online survey: RIP readers• Goal: 50 participants• Google forms or home brew survey

"It is only through rigorous studies of visual decoding that informed judgments can be made about how to choose display methods“*
