Organizing a Notebook

Supplies you will need: Scissors Colored pencils (NO MARKERS OR CRAYON) Glue sticks Post it notes Pencil/pen Highlighter

What is an Interactive Science Notebook?

ISN is your own personalized “diary” of science learning

It is a portfolio of your work in ONE spot. It is great for studying for upcoming quizzes and tests

It is a great organizational tool that gives you permission to be creative in your responses without “messing up” your notes

It allows you to THINK, RECORD, AND REFLECT like a REAL SCIENTIST

It will be collected at the end of each quarter for a test grade.

What is an ISN?

The LEFT SIDE is for is for your personal side. This is the side that you can use to show me your creativity. This side will be how you interact with the information in your unique and creative way.

Ex: diagrams, flow charts, vocabulary cartoons, reflections, etc.

The RIGHT SIDE if the information side. You will write in and glue in information from class.

Ex: notes, foldables, powerpoints, videos, concept maps, etc.

What is an ISN?

The RIGHT SIDE is used for recording class notes, discussion notes, and reading notes. Handouts with new information will go on the right side.

What is an ISN?

The left side is used for processing new ideas. You will work out an understanding of new materials by using illustrations, diagrams, flow charts, poetry, etc. you will explore your opinions and clarify your values on controversial issues and wonder about the “what if” situations here.

Step One of Setting Up Your ISN

Get a sharpie out, your folder, and glue

On the FRONT COVER you must include the following: ISN Your name Class and period The school year: 2014-2015

Glue or staple the folder to the very back of the notebook. This will be where you keep work that cannot go in the notebook and work that needs to be finished before you put it in the notebook.

Label the right side of the folder: WORK IN PROGRESS Label the left side of the folder: Other Notes

Step Two of Setting Up Your ISN

Use a pen or pencil.

Starting with the second page, number the first 50 pages. The 2nd page is 1. Numbers should be small and at the top outside corner of every page.
