The IDB is the oldest of all regional development institutions of the world and constitutes the main source of multilateral financing for economic, social and institutional projects of development, and those of commerce and regional integration, in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Bank was created in 1959.

In actuality it is composed of 47 member countries:

– 26 borrowing countries

– 21 non borrowing countries, including the United States, Japan, Republic of Korea, Canada, Israel and 16 European countries.

The IDB headquarters is located in Washington, D.C.

The IDB has 26 Country Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean and 2 Special Offices, one in Europe and the other in Japan.

Has a staff of 1,805 employees.

The total capital of the Bank as of December 31, 2006 was of $US 100,953 billion.

The total of loans approved by the Bank from 1961-2006 has been for more than $US 145,020 billion.

In the year 2006, the total of loans offered by the Bank has been $US 6,380 billion.
