Communal Reconciliation Service

During Lent we have a communal reconciliation

service. This Lent the service will be on Friday March

13 at 7:30 pm. We will have several priests available

to hear confessions. Most of our priest are available to

hear confessions in more than one language. They

should be able to hear confessions in English, Spanish,

Portuguese, and Vietnamese.

During the reconciliation service we will together make a short examination of conscience but it

is good to make a good examination of conscience before you come. There are links to several

examinations of conscience on the parish website. They are geared to people in different states

of life; children, young adults, married, single, etc. See stjohnelcerrito.org/faith-

formation/sacraments/confession/ or just type confession in the search box.

If it has been a while since your last confession the website has some helpful videos on how to

go to confession. At the communal reconciliation service, most of our priests will be in quiet

corners of the church. One priest will be in the confessional so you can confess with anonymity.

We will have several priests hearing confessions so you can choose one you are familiar with or

you can choose a priest who does not know you.

Come cleanse your soul. Restore your relationship with the Lord. Fill your soul with His

sanctifying grace.

What temptations lure us from the path of discipleship? Possessions? Pride? Power? Oh, Lord, create for us

a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

2019/2020 Financial Report St. John the Baptist Parish – El Cerrito

Each year, the St. John the Baptist Finance Committee reports to the parish on the previous year’s parish financial status and the upcoming year’s budget.

In 2019, thanks to your generosity, our income exceeded our operating costs by $20,239. However, with capital improvements and depreciation added in, we still ended the year with a net loss of $61,042. To balance our budget, we pulled money out of our savings

In addition to our normal collections, our parishioners donated $11,543 in our planned diocesan second collections, $7,922 to the school development fund, and $6,046 to the GRIP Soup Kitchen and St Vincent DePaul. The Parish’s Annual Bishop’s Appeal campaign netted $28,823 for the Diocese (123% of our goal). Also, our Parish Festival netted $17,443.

The following major maintenance or capital projects were completed in 2019:

Painting the front of the church, rectory and convent. Redoing the floors of the convent in preparation for

future rental.

The 2020 budget forecasts lower overall income. This is primarily a result of 1) reduced rental income with the nun’s departure, and 2) reduced rebates from the Capital Campaign. We are holding the plate collections even because mass attendance held constant this year.

The budget also forecasts slightly higher expenses as a result of increases in salaries and benefits dictated by the Diocese. Additionally, we have budgeted $35,000 for a minimal amount of general repairs throughout the facility. This includes:

Sprinkler repairs throughout the facility; A cleanup of the landscaping throughout the

facility Changing the convent entrance in preparation for

rental Replacing the sign in front of the church.

As a result, the 2020 budget shows a deficit of $40,000 for the year, excluding capital improvements and depreciation. Again, this comes directly out of our savings.

As you can see from the graph below, we have been able to reduce expenses over the last 6 years. As an example, our administrative staff has currently cut back to 30 hours per week. However, it will be very difficult to make further cuts without hurting the quality of the services provided to the parish. Therefore, this makes the income side even more critical.

Clearly, we need your help!! We were successful in balancing our income and operating costs in 2019 because of your generosity. We need to do it again in 2020! We appreciate anything you can do to help with your donations. Remember to include St John’s in your estate planning. Support the church and school fundraisers. Get involved. Be ambassadors of the Parish and School.

We encourage you to use collection envelopes and to consider signing up with Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) in order to better support our church

The Pastoral Council will continue to work with Fr. Thuong in 2020 to determine what we need to do to maintain a vibrant and thriving parish.

Thank you so much for your support in 2019. That support is so critical in keeping our community alive and healthy for the foreseeable future.

33 Days to Morning Glory

You are invited to participate in a retreat leading to total Consecration to Jesus through Mary. Best described by

Saint Maximilian Kolbe who said: Marian consecration is “The surest, easiest, shortest, and the most perfect

means to becoming a Saint.” We will use Father Michel Gaitley’s book, 33 Days to Morning Glory. Father

Gaitley chose four Marian giants; Saint Luis de Montfort, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Saint Teresa de Calcutta

(Mother Teresa) and Saint John Paul II, to lead us through an updated version of Saint Luis De Montfort’s

consecration. Each week we will study one of these Marian giants and discover the impact consecration made in

their lives. Join us!
