It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapies. What is Integrative Medicine?
§Integrative medicine, as defined by the American Board of Integrative Medicine® (ABOIM) and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.

Working Together: ZSFGH Collaboration§2014 conducted a study of group acupuncture for painful diabetic neuropathy with SFGH patients. Recruited patients at SFGH and provided acupuncture at community clinic a few blocks away
§2015 SFGH bylaws changed to include credentialing for LAcs for the first time in the 100+ years of the hospital. LAcs were credentialed for outpatient primary care. Integrative Health Service was established as part of the SFGH Community Wellness Program. Launched a small pilot of acupuncture in FCM with ACTCM faculty.

Working Together: ZSFGH Collaboration (cont’d)
§ 2016 Launched Integrative Pain Management Program at Tom Waddell Urban Health Clinic – ongoing program that now accepts referrals from other SFHN clinics
§2017 Pilot of integrative nutritional counseling for Cantonese speaking patients with diabetes at Chinatown Public Health Center
§ 2019 Expanded scope of practice of LAcs to include inpatient. Launched inpatient acupuncture in March and currently providing inpatient acupuncture at ZSFG 3 afternoons/week
