DESCRIPTION
Presentation for the Cloud Summit 2013. Some tips and views on how to transition to Cloud services cleanly and quickly start seeing ROI improvement in your business. This presentation promotes a hybrid view of Cloud deployment from initial , through transition and even in end state where IT assumes the role of a Cloud Services Broker to the organisationTRANSCRIPT
Integrating Cloud resources with existing architecture
A Smooth transition to the Cloud
Hrusostomos Vicatos4th Cloud & Virtualisation Summit Africa 2013 - Johannesburg, South Africa
Introduction• Cloud Promises a Lot !!– Quick Provisioning– “Pay for what you want when you need it”– Ubiquitous Access– Greater Efficiencies
• Journey to Cloud not as quick for some– The cost of Change underestimated– ROI not as immediate
• How do we tap into the benefits of Cloud while managing and operating our current IT environments??
Enterprise Concerns Moving to Cloud• Security: Cloud Provider must secure your Data at rest and in motion,
especially with multi-tenanted architectures , multiple user IAM and PKI management
• Culture: Organizations generally oppose change - overcoming cultural challenges within your group are important.
• Cloud model: Several models and providers are available, each with distinct benefits - Difficult to decide
• Compatibility Issue: Disconnect between what’s in-house and the service offered across different CSP’s
• Reliability Issue: cloud applications not all the same in how self-healing or resiliency services are provided to applications that have not been designed “for fail.”
• Network Issue: often a big roadblock (especially where bandwidth is expensive). Network bandwidth and reliability is often one of the more frequently used reasons (or excuses?) to not adopt public cloud services.
• New investments needed to adopt off premise resources: cost to move variable workloads to clouds, both in terms of human expertise and management tools, is major financial and management concern especially as incremental to existing Infra
• Control: Storing sensitive & proprietary data on external environment carries risks.
• Compliance: CSP’s need to facilitate the Customer compliance requirements • Visibility: Quickly scaling up can be difficult to manage and track. Costing
and reliability measurement tools, can improve visibility and ensure alignment over the cloud resources purchased
• Fixed vs. variable costs: Cloud offers best cost results for variable workloads, as well as for certain consistent workloads
• Lifecycle automation and knowledge management: launching and closing public cloud servers over the different lifecycle stages such as PoC, test, staging, and production is required
• ISV Support: Application and database OEM’s still not coming to the party!

Assess & Choose Best Fit• Which Elements of my Infrastructure?– Consider the Different Stakeholders from a
systems management perspective • People, Process, Systems, Data
• It’s not “All or Nothing”– Some Elements will remain unchanged– Elements will transition at different times
• Not “One size Fits All”– You must consider mix of different Cloud Solutions– You must be able to work across different Cloud
Service Providers

• Parts of your IT Infra move to Cloud they reposition
• Your IT Systems are spread across different Quadrants– Need Manage Carefully which IT
elements move to which Quadrants
• Need to manage– Movement from base state to new
state– Movement between different new
states– Rapid ability to roll back to base
state
• Need to Monitor performance, availability & SLA’s
• Need to Audit Compliance & Security

Some Cloud Concepts to ponder
• Hybrid Cloud• Personal Cloud• Cloud Brokerage
Hybrid Cloud• Gartner Definition: “the coordinated use of cloud services across isolation
and provider boundaries among public, private and community service providers, or between internal and external cloud services. Like a cloud computing service, a hybrid cloud computing service is scalable, has elastic IT-enabled capabilities and is delivered as a shared service to customers using Internet technologies. However, a hybrid cloud service crosses isolation and provider boundaries”
• Hybrid cloud computing can take a number of forms – Mix of IaaS,PaaS,SaaS– Mix of Private, Public, Community– Infrastructure Computing Elements Mixed
• Example: Storage is Private and Local, but Backup in the Cloud
• Dynamic Workload placement and Runtime Optimization leveraged– Cloudbursting !
• Management of SDLC using Hybrid Cloud– Example: Dev/Testing in Public Cloud, Production on Private Cloud
• Business Continuity Services– Distaster Recovery or High Availability Site in the Community Cloud but Production on Private Cloud
• Services composition: solution with a portion running on internal systems, and another portion delivered from the external cloud environment – Example: Mashups where public cloud-based services are combined with internal application components to create a
composite application
During Prolonged
Transitioning to Cloud
you are In Hybrid
Cloud Mode
Personal Cloud• Personal cloud is the individual's collection of digital content,
services and apps, which are seamlessly accessible across any device.
• Especially Relevant in a BYOD paradigm– Applicable to Desktop Management– Fast Becoming a Viable Alternative to Virtual Desktop
• The personal cloud is not a tangible entity as such, but the realization of four different types of experience in which users store, synchronize, stream and share content on a contextual basis, moving from one platform, screen and location to another
• Examples: SkyDrive, DropBox for File Storage• Examples: Backblaze, Mozy for Backup
Cloud Service Brokers• Cloud services brokerage is an IT role and business model whereby a
company or third party works on behalf of the consumer of one or more cloud services to intermediate and add value to the services being consumed combining – Integration as a service – Governance – other value-added services like security, context and analytics – Service Aggregation
• The lack of adopted standards across CSP’s creates the need for Cloud Brokers
• Some brokers specialize in integration between specific providers such as Salesforce.com (CRM), Workday, and Google.
• Some integration will need to be done between cloud services and on-premise software obtained from traditional when doing a migration to Cloud– In essence the CSB can manage across your Install Base as well as the
aggregated CSP’s

CSB: Another View
Founded 2007, cloud storage targeting enterprises with public, hybrid, and private cloud storage services
More than $70 million in venture capital funding
Vendors impacted- IBM uses the Nirvanix cloud storage technology in its SmartCloud Enterprise. Dell, HP, Riverbed, Symantec, and TwinStrata source their Cloud storage from Nirvanix
Have a Good Exit Strategy!
Like DRP..Test it Often !!
Considerations• Skills / People• Management Tools• Systems Landscape
– Interfaces and Data Flows – Database Size
• Geography– Offices– Mobility of users– Systems Spread
• Your IT Services Portfolio– What types of Services are / aren’t Cloud Friendly
• Service Management Obligations– Business Continuity Management– Performance– Availability– Compliance– Security– Processes
In Conclusion
• Cloud Promises a can be realised !!– But maybe not all at once!
• Plan the Journey– Assess Correctly what, where, when, how !
• Leverage Cloud Brokerage– Position IT Organisation as a Cloud Broker or,– Leverage Cloud Brokers– Tap into Other Cloud Service Types (Personal Cloud)
that can be cost effectively leveraged in the Enterprise
