Electricity Pretest
Electromagnetic Gravity Strong Force Weak Force
Forces are not transmitted directly between objects, but instead are described by interactions in force fields.
Each force has an “exchange particle.”
What are the 4 Known Forces?
Interaction of particles with an electrical charge.
For a long time, the electric and magnetic forces were considered to be different forces, but they were finally unified by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864.
Electromagnetism is perhaps the most obvious prevalent force in our world, as it can affect things at a reasonable distance and with a fair amount of force…can attract & repel.
The photon is the exchange particle for this force.
Electromagnetic
Furthest reach, but it's the weakest in actual magnitude.
a long-range attractive force that acts on all particles.
Exchange particle has been named the graviton.
Gravity
Keeps nucleons (protons & neutrons) bound together.
Force is at the subatomic level. The strongest force of all known forces. Holds quarks together to form neutrons and
protons, and holds neutrons and protons together to form nuclei.
The exchange particle is the gluon.
Strong Force
The weak interaction is a very powerful force that acts on the scale of the atomic nucleus.
It causes radioactive decay and explains nuclear fusion reactions in stars.
A repulsive short-range force. Exchange particle is the boson (W & Z) and
these particles were only confirmed in 1983!
Weak Force
Modern unified field theory attempts to bring these four interactions together into a single framework.
Electromagnetism, Strong & Weak forces have been unified.
Gravity is not, but physicists are working on that…
Unification of Forces
Has to do with electric charge. Electric charge creates electromagnetic
fields that interact. Studied since ancient times, but only in
modern time that we have been able to put it to practical use.
Plenty of examples of well known effects: lightning, static, electric current…
What is electricity?
Charged objects exert a force and within the structure of an atom are different charges that exert forces.
