“Are you the sort of person who can turn
around when you have nothing left, and find
that little bit extra inside you to keep going?”
BEAR GRYLLS
COURSE OVERVIEW
Here at The Bear Grylls Survival Academy we offer a variety of courses at
different extremity levels and for all audiences from kids to outdoor
enthusiasts to hard-core adventurers. With courses popping up all over the
globe we need to recruit freelance instructors to work as a part of the team.
We have many success stories of guys and girls coming through the
Instructors Academy who are now working directly with Bear's team as either
safety assistants, wilderness location scouts, journey producers or as
adventurous activity coordinators. Our team of instructors have had
opportunities around the world taking training sessions on Bear's unique
survival techniques to new and potential partners and assuring quality
control. The course teaches everything from self-protection, stalking and
survival techniques to foraging, astro-navigation and river crossings ensuring
a thorough knowledge of all that (BGSA) encompasses.
As continued professional development, there will be an introduction to
wilderness first aid, maintenance and care of technical climbing equipment
and the first step to a professional teaching qualification. Upon completion of
the Instructors Course, candidates selected to officially join the Academy will
be able to set up survival situations/stances, assist with preparing lesson
plans and act as a safety supervisor on BGSA courses. Candidates will be
eligible to advance to Lead Instructor Level and onto Staff Instructor in due
course.
The BGSA instructor course is run over three days with a separate
assessment day. Successful Instructors can also assist with writing lesson
plans, risk assessments, schemes of work and bring any other skills held can
be integrated into the Academy.

AWARDS
The Bear Grylls Survival Academy want to ensure that successful
candidates leave the course with more than just a fun, action-packed
experience.
After instructors have taught on a range of BGSA courses and have
gained further experience in the mountains, on rock or on water, they
will be able to attend either additional private training or attend
BGSA further development accredited training courses such as:
(NNAS) Gold, silver, bronze – Navigation Awards
(R3) SWNW, BWR, SRT – Water Safety Awards
(MTA) CWA, RCI, ML – Mountains/Climbing
(CIEH) EFAW, FAW, Adventure First Aid – First Aid
(IRATA) 1, 2, 3 – Industrial Rope Access
Mine and Cave Leader
If instructors are committed, determined, work hard, gain some of the
above qualifications and further experience, there is no reason why
they cannot progress within BGSA to become a Lead Instructor and
then in due course, a BGSA Staff instructor.
AIMS Our primary aim is to recruit and train potential instructors for use on BGSA
courses worldwide. Our secondary aim is to put together a training program to
be used by outdoor enthusiasts and existing outdoor instructors for their
enjoyment or continued professional development(CPD). This course may aid
application for further employment with organizations teaching leadership,
sports coaching, fitness development, outdoor activity training or adventurous
training i.e. climbing, canoeing, hill walking etc. Bear Grylls Survival Academy
Instructor development offers the initial instructor training course followed by the
opportunity to then become a Lead Instructor and eventually become a BGSA
Staff Instructor. Each level qualifies successful participants to work in different
levels within BGSA, while also delivering valid outdoor industry standard
qualifications, such as Single Pitch Award (SPA), Summer Mountain Leader
Award, Rescue 3 Water Safety awards, Industrial Rope Access Awards and
First Aid. The BGSA instructor courses also offer useful survival information in
the form of both theory and practical skills and the courses are delivered by
Bear’s team of highly skilled, experienced and qualified Lead Instructors; all of
whom have worked alongside Bear as advisors, safety assistants or as
activity/stunt coordinators on shows such as Born Survivor, Running Wild,
Mission Survive, Bears Mission with, and Bear Grylls Survival School. The lead
instructors have a vast knowledge base, are highly qualified and experienced,
and have a proven track record in teaching and development. Each of them also

Bear Grylls has become known worldwide as one of the most recognised faces of survival
and outdoor adventure.
His journey started as a young boy on the Isle of Wight, where his late father taught him to
climb and sail.
Trained from a young age in martial arts, Grylls went on to spend three years as a soldier in
the British Special Forces, as part of 21 SAS Regiment. It was here that he perfected many of
the survival skills that his fans all over the world enjoy, as he pits himself against the worst of
Mother Nature.
Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places and
endured many months in and out of military rehabilitation, Grylls recovered and went on to
become one of the youngest climbers ever to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
He then went on to star in seven seasons of the Discovery Channel’s Emmy Award-
nominated “Man vs. Wild” TV series, which became one of the most-watched shows on the
planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers.
Since then he has gone on to host more extreme adventure TV shows across more global
networks than anyone else in the world, including five seasons of the BAFTA award-winning
The Island with Bear Grylls, the hit TV show Running Wild, Hostile Planet for National
Geographic and “You Vs Wild” for Netflix.
Running Wild now playing on National Geographic has featured Bear taking some of the
world’s best known stars on incredible adventures. These include President Obama, Julia
Roberts, Roger Federer, Will Ferrell, Zac Efron, Channing Tatum, Kate Winslet, to name but
a few.
His autobiography Mud Sweat and Tears spent 15 weeks at Number 1 in the Sunday Times
Bestseller list and he has written over 85 books, selling in excess of 15 million copies
worldwide.
He is an Honorary Colonel to the Royal Marines Commandos, the youngest ever UK Chief
Scout and the first ever Chief Ambassador to the World Scout Movement, representing a
global family of some fifty million Scouts.
He is married to Shara and together they have three young boys who also love adventure.
They live between a houseboat on the Thames and a private island off the Welsh coast.
Bear’s life motto is simple: courage and kindness... and never give up!
