Instructions to Patients Wearing a Removable Orthodontic Appliance / Brace
Youarewearingaremovableappliance,whichisintendedtobewornatalltimes.Onlyremovetheappliancewhen
youareplayingsportsorbrushingyourteeth.Remember,thesuccessofthistreatmentdependsverymuchon
yourco-operation!
Don’t worry….
• Itwilltakeapproximatelyaweekforeventhebestfittingappliancetofeelcomfortable
inyourmouthbecauseitisdesignedtomakeyourteethmove.
• Chewingwillfeelstrangeatfirst,butthiswillimproveafterafewmeals.
• Speechwillalsobealteredwhentheapplianceisfirstfitted,butwillreturntonormalinafewdays.
Care of the appliance and your teeth
• Itisessentialthatyourteethandyourbracearekeptperfectlyclean.
• Aftereverymeal,removeyourbraceandrinseundercoldwater.
• Atleasteachmorningandnighttime,removethebrace,brushyourteethandbrushtheappliance
(usingadifferenttoothbrush)andthenreplacethebraceimmediately.
• Whenbrushingthebracebecarefulnottodamagethewiresprings.
• Avoidstickyfoods,especiallytoffeeandchewinggumasthesedamagethebrace.
• Treatthebracecarefully,BREAKAGESWILLPROLONGTREATMENT.
• Ifthebracedoesbreakorbecomeundulyuncomfortableorforanyreasonyoufeelthatit
shouldbeleftoutofyourmouth,telephonethesurgeryforadvice.

• Donothesitatetocontactthesurgeryifyouhaveanyquestionsonanyaspectofyourtreatmentortoarrange
anappointmentifanypartofthebracebecomeslooseordamagedoriscausingunduediscomfort.
