Degree Requirement Components
List each credit-bearing course requirement for the degree the student is pursuing by specific course number and title
(e.g., ENGL 101, English Composition). In cases where multiple course options are available, be as specific as
possible — major-related electives (e.g., “Management Electives”), general education requirements (e.g., “Humanities
Electives”), or non-specific requirements (e.g., “Free Electives”). Keep in mind that providing specificity and clarity on the
Student Agreement enables students to stay on track toward degree completion and provides Service education
representatives with the information they need to assist the student.
• Course Number
o Enter the number of the home institution course as listed in the institution catalog
• Course Title
o Enter:
o Title of the home institution course as listed in the institution catalog
o A brief description for electives or other non-course-specific
requirements (e.g., “Free Electives,” “Social Science Electives”)
• Degree Required Area
o Select from:
▪ General Education (GE) (or Core courses all degrees must take at the institution)
▪ Academic Major (AM) (Discipline area required for specific Major)
▪ Minor (M) (optional)
▪ General Electives (GEL) (or Free Electives needed to reach the required credit hours to earn a degree)
• Required Hours for Degree
o Enter:
o Required credit hours for each course or the total hours required for elective/non-course-specific requirements
o Specific requirement in the Course Title column if course-level restrictions apply
(e.g., “Management Electives, at least 6 upper-level credits”)
• Hours Still Needed
o Enter the hours still needed by the Servicemember to complete the individual degree requirement. Compute
this number by subtracting the credit awarded from the required hours for degree.
• SOC DNS Course Category Code
o SOC DNS member institutions enter the SOC DNS Course Category Code in this column where specific
courses are listed in the degree plan and those courses are listed in the SOC DNS Course Transferability Tables.
Institution staff may look up the course number under the home institution’s name in the College Course Index
portion of Chapter 5 of this Handbook. If the course is listed and does not have a “Before” date, find its listing
in the Transferability Tables under that category code and check to see that its title is correct. (If the titles do not
match, notify SOC so that an update can be made to the course listing or re-circulate the course as appropriate.)
Always consult the Handbook or Web pages for the degree’s type (associate or bachelor’s) as there are separate
categories for each.

Evaluation and Award of Credit
Evaluate the student’s previous institution coursework, military training and occupational experience, college-level
examinations, certification examinations, and other non-traditional credit sources for applicability toward the degree
requirements. For each requirement, evaluate and enter any earned credit that satisfies all or part of the requirement in the
appropriate column. Note: Only enter credit sources on the SOC DNS Student Agreement that satisfy a degree
requirement.
• Institution Coursework
o Resident column
o Enter credit hours awarded for successful completion of coursework with the home institution applied toward
degree requirements (students must complete academic residency with their home institution prior to award of
degree).
o Transfer column
o Enter credit hours accepted from other institutions and applied toward degree requirements. Credits accepted
from Community College of the Air Force transcripts should be placed here. Indicate the source of the credit
in the “Notes” column (e.g., CTC SOC222, UMUC ECON201).
• Military Credit
• Service Schools column
o Enter credit hours awarded for Service school’s military training courses applied toward degree requirements.
The Joint Services Transcript (JST) documents military training using ACE IDs. The training prefixes for each
service are: AR [Army], AF [Air Force], CG [Coast Guard], DD [Department of Defense], MC [Marine
Corps], and NV [Navy].
• MOS/Rating column
o Enter credit hours awarded for military occupational experience applied toward degree requirements. The JST
documents military occupational experience (e.g., “MOS” in the Army and Marine Corps, and “Rating” in the
Navy and Coast Guard), using ACE IDs. Some of the occupational specialty prefixes for each service are: MOS
[Army MOS], CGW [Coast Guard Warrant], MCE [Marine Corps Enlisted], and NER [Navy Enlisted Rating].
o Note: The best source of documentation of the individual’s military training and experience is the JST. Also
consult the SOC Degree Network System Credit Evaluation Supplement for guidance on relating and
matching ACE credit terms with SOC DNS Course Category Codes and elective areas. Recommendations
from the SOC Credit Evaluation Supplement appear on the Summary pages of the JST. For career
servicemembers
o who completed training sponsored by other Services or DoD and/or military training/experience before the
establishment of the JST (or the previous AARTS, SMART, or CGI Transcript), the servicemember should
provide alternative documentation, such as a copy of his or her DD-295 “Application for the Evaluation of
Learning Experiences During Military Service” or DD-214 “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active
Duty.” Servicemembers may also submit course completion certificates as documentation when appropriate.

college credit from these testing programs. Credit amounts and levels for examinations are primarily derived
from the ACE Military Guide.
o Certification Examination column
o Enter credit hours awarded for certification examinations such as those from the Federal
Aviation Administration and other certification/licensure sources.
o Other column
