CONCERNING THE BATTERIESUse the supplied or separately sold AA nickel metal hydride batteries withyour digital camera.
CAUTIONœ Please do not use manganese batteries. Not only is the battery life
extremely short, but there is also a danger of damage to the camera fromthe manganese batteries overheating.
About the battery rechargerBe sure to fully charge the supplied nickel metal hydride batteries beforeusing them in your camera. For charging the batteries, use the suppliedbattery charger.Charge the batteries if they are being used for the first time, and rechargethem whenever the remaining charge is low (see “CHECKING THEREMAINING BATTERY CHARGE” on page 174).
Recharging nickel metal hydride batteriesœ The supplied battery recharger can be used for the following Sanyo
batteries.
Nickel metal hydride batteriesAA: HR-3U (supplied)AAA: HR-4U
Ni-Cd batteriesAA: N-3US, N-3UAAA: N-4U

œ The recharge time for two of the supplied nickel metal hydride AA batteriesplaced in the outer sockets is approx. 115 minutes, and approx. 210minutes for three or four batteries.
œ The two inner sockets of the battery charger accept both AA and AAAbatteries. A maximum of four AA batteries, or two AA and two AAAbatteries, can be recharged at the same time. (You can also recharge twoAAA batteries only.)
œ If the batteries were first discharged before being placed in the batterycharger, the battery recharge indicator may at first flash. If the indicatorchanges to a steady light, it indicates that the batteries are being properlyrecharged.
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002
English 32
CONCERNING THE BATTERIESAbout recharging batteriesœ Recharge batteries in the following cases
Newly purchased batteriesBatteries which have not been used for a long time
œ Always recharge two batteries at the same time.
œ During recharging, the battery charger and batteries will be warm. This isnormal and does not indicate a malfunction.
œ It is recommended that the ambient temperature during recharging bebetween about 10°C and 40°C. Due to the characteristics of the batteries,at temperatures below 10°C, it may not be possible to sufficiently rechargethem.
œ If, even with the batteries properly installed, the recharge indicatorcontinues to flash or the batteries feel hot after a very short period of use,the batteries may have reached the end of their useful life. If the samesymptoms appear even with new batteries, or if the battery rechargeindicator does not go out even after about 290 minutes of recharging, theremay be another problem. Discontinue recharging the batteries immediatelyand consult your dealer.
ABOUT THE BATTERIESœ You can also use AA Ni-Cd batteries, but they will not last as long as the
AA nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries. If you do not have accessto these batteries, you may use alkaline batteries; however the duration ofoperation provided by alkaline batteries will be very short.
œ A small amount of battery power is still used even when the digital camerais turned off. It is recommended that you remove the batteries from thedigital camera when it is not being used. However, when the batteries areremoved for a long period, the date and time settings may be cleared. When reinstalling recharged batteries, recheck the date and time settings(see page 164).
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002
33 English
Cautions concerning the nickel metal hydridebatteriesœ Periodically clean with a dry cloth the terminals of the nickel metal hydride
batteries ((+) and (–)) and the terminals located in the battery compartmentof the digital camera.Do not touch the battery terminals or the terminals in the batterycompartment of the digital camera with your bare hands. Doing so will allowcontaminants from your hands to adhere to the terminals and oxidize, increasing the contact resistance. If the contact resistance increases, theusable life of the batteries will diminish.
œ If you repeatedly remove the nickel metal hydride batteries before they runout and recharge them, or place them into the digital camera before theyare fully recharged, then a “memory effect”* may occur.
œ Your digital camera is designed to handle the effects from voltagefluctuations caused by the “memory effect” of nickel metal hydridebatteries. Nevertheless, there are times when the remaining chargeindicator may show èç or êç earlier than usual. If any symptoms suchas these occur, first discharge the batteries completely (see page 172) andthen recharge them until they are fully charged.
* Memory effectMemory effect is a phenomenon where the battery performancetemporarily decreases. In general, the battery voltage during use dropsbelow its normal voltage until it is fully discharged and recharged again.

RESOLUTION 14
SX215/EX, U (VPC-MZ2 GB) Mon. March 25/2002
English 95
HINTThe Ó resolution is achieved by the camera processing the image internallyto generate an approximately 30 million-pixel image.
NOTEAbout the resolution and compression settings (see page 97)œ The image captured by a digital camera consists of a collection of small
dots. The resolution refers to the number of these dots, and the greater thenumber, the higher the image quality. As the resolution increases, the sizeof the resulting data also increases, and the number of images that can becaptured decreases. To compensate for this, this digital camera is able tocompress the data. This digital camera uses JPEG compression. If JPEG compression is used, when the image is played back, an extremelysmall portion of it is lost. The higher the compression rate, the more of theoriginal image is lost. Therefore, this digital camera also allows you to storeimage data without any compression to ensure that none of the originalimage is lost. This is the L mode. Since the image data is large when theL mode is used, compared to JPEG compression, the digital camerarequires more time both to store the data after the shutter release button ispressed and to display the image in the playback mode.

EDITING VIDEO CLIPSYou can cut a video clip at a desired point and save it from the beginning tothat point as a separate video clip, or save from that point to the end as aseparate video clip (“clipping”).
You can also join two video clips together and save them as one separate clip(“joining”).
NOTECaution when editing video clipsœ When editing video clips, do not move the main switch. If you move the

ASSIGNING FILE NAMESIf a reformatted card is used, the file name (image number) of the capturedimage automatically begins from 0001. If the card is subsequentlyreformatted, or if a different reformatted card is used, the file names againbegin from 0001. This is because the file number reset function is set to ON,and consequently it results in more than one card containing images with thesame numbers. By setting the file number reset function to OFF, even if thecard is reformatted or the card is replaced with another card, the consecutivenumbering of file names continues from the last number recorded by thecamera.

œ Even with cards of the same capacity, the amount of data that can actually be storedmay differ depending on the card brand, etc.
Cautions when using the Microdriveœ When using the Microdrive continuously, the card will become very hot. Be careful when
touching the card for removal, etc.œ When using the Microdrive, it will take a few seconds after the digital camera is turned
on before the card can be used. This time will increase when more data is stored on thecard.
œ When erasing a large amount of data with the “GROUP ERASE” command, you mayhave to wait a few seconds. (It will take approx. 1 minute to erase 2,000 still imagesfrom the Microdrive.)
œ It will take a great deal of time to download large amounts of data from the Microdrive toyour computer.
œ Microdrive cards require more power than CompactFlash cards. Therefore the possiblebattery operation time (see page 200) when using the Microdrive will be much less thanthat when using a CompactFlash card.
œ Microdrive cards are easily damaged by vibrations. Be sure to read the cautionssupplied with the Microdrive.
