Learning Goals

• For both BA and MA levels• The course gives both theoretical and methodological understandings

of how media research that focuses on globalisation and globalisation process can be conducted

• Students will learn to analyse the way in which media and communication can be seen as important causes and dynamic drivers in complex globalisation processes.

• The course will make students familiar with political economy perspectives and cultural studies approaches to the study of the global media and cultural industries.

• This will enable them to analyse and understand similarities and differences in the various cultural fields and subfields

• The course work is aimed to develop the students skills of both oral and written presentation and argumentation

• MA-level compared to BA-level• More analytical, more maturity and independent reflection.

Globalisation: What is it?

• Globalisation is a contested term, but it is usually used to describe a series of interrelated processes, including:

– Internationalisation of production, trade & finance– International movement of people– International communication flows– Global circulation of ideas– Development of international organisations, e.g. World

Bank, IMF– Growing significance of global NGOs, e.g. Amnesty Int,

Red Cross

Globalisation: Definitions

• Many definitions of globalisation. Jan Art Scholte (2000) has identified five broad definitions of globalisation which are useful as a starting point:

• 1. Globalisation as Internationalisation (loose interdependence)

• 2. Globalisation as Liberalisation (open, borderless economy)

• 3. Globalisation as Universalisation (a planetary synthesis of cultures)

• 4. Globalisation as Westernisation/Modernisation (Americanisation, imperialism, McDonaldisation)

• 5.Globalisation as Deterritorialisation (reconfiguration of geography where territorial borders are increasinlgy irrelevant)

Theories of Globalisation

• Theories of globalisation can be summarised into two broad groups:– Strong globalisation theories (the globalist): these

argue that globalisation has resulted in a radical shift in societies that the analytical categories that have guided social analysis such as the nation-state, society, national economies and national cultures are becoming less and less applicable.

– Weak globalisation theories (sceptics): these argue that globalisation is just another extension of imperialism and that the discourse of globalisation helps justify and legitimise the neo-liberal global project, e.g. (the creation of a global free market and the consolidation of Anglo-American capitalism)

* (Read Held & McGrew from the curriculum for further details on this debate)

Where do the media fit in?

• Media are the centre of the changes that are driving globalisation. There are 3 dimensions to this argument:– Media constitute the technologies and service delivery

platforms through which international flows are transacted– The media industries are leaders in the push towards

global expansion and integration– The media provide informational content and images of

the world through which people seek to make sense of events in distance places.

Mediated Globalisation?

• Mediation means that we increasingly globalisation through the media. Globalisation through the media changes:– People´s social relations– Forms of interaction– People´s experience

• Thus Rantanen (2005:8) defines globalisation as:– “a process in which worldwide economic, political, cultural and

social relations have become increasingly mediated across time and space.

• Anthony Giddens (1990:64) defines globalisation as:– “the intensification of world-wide social relations, which link

distance localities in a such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occuring many miles away and vice versa”

Themes in media and globalisation

• In a nutshell, media and globalisation focus on the following:– The role of the media and cultural industries in the

process of globalisation– Media ownership– Changing trends in international news– Global flows of communication– Mediated communication through, e.g. News, film, music,

internet– Political economy of the media
