Thrillers released in 2015
There were 689 films released in 2015, and 459 of these were thrillers, which made a total gross profit of $9,950,469,095.The success of the three thrillers I have researched has been measured by total gross profit (as of December 2015), according to:
Box Office Mojo’s Chart of Total Grosses of All Films Released in 2015
Film classification’s are according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
Thriller 1 – Jurassic World
In 2015, the most successful thriller released was Jurassic World, released by Universal Studios. Release date: 11th June 2015 Profit: $652,270,625 Director: Colin Trevvorow BBFC Classification: 12A Sub-Genres: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi IMDB Score: 7.1/10
Thriller 2 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the second most successful thriller released in 2015, which was released by Buena Vista. Release date: 17th December 2015 Profit: $544,573,329 Director: J.J. Abrams BBFC Classification: 12A Sub-Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy IMDB Score: 8.6/10
Thriller 3 – Avengers: Age of Ultron
The third most successful thriller released in 2015 was Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was also released by Buena Vista. Release date: 23rd April 2015 Profit: $459,005,868 Director: Joss Whedon BBFC Classification: 12A Sub-Genres: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi IMDB Score: 7.6/10
Typical Thriller Audience (2015)
All three films have a BBFC rating of 12A, and fit into the sub genres of both action and adventure. Therefore, the typical audience is quite young and is quite interested in action and adventure type films.Generally, the audience of these three films are stereotypically male. The most popular way to watch these three films was in a 3D or IMAX Cinema, so are aimed at people who can afford this (generally the middle-class).All three films are also part of a series, so the audience is obviously interested in finding out what happens, so the film before may end on a cliff hanger. Jurassic World is a modern re-make of Jurassic Park, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a modern continuation of the previous Star Wars films. Therefore, the audience’s attention has already been captured from the previous films.
How to make my Thriller successful
After my research, I am more aware of how to make my thriller successful. In order for my thriller to be successful, I should: Aim it at a 12A audience Aim it at males Think about it being seen in a 3D or IMAX cinema, so aim it at the
middle-class and above Use codes and conventions of action and adventure thrillers Think about my thriller being part of a series, as these prove to be
popular Think about including fantasy or sci-fi aspects to the thriller
