  • Common Training Programme for the Partner Test Labs, BEEP

    A Presentation by

    Institute of Technology,

    Nirma University, Ahmedabad

    15th May 2015, Ahmedabad

  • Presentation Overview

    Introduction to the Thermal Insulations Testing

    Facility, Nirma University

    Available testing equipments

    Testing Experiences

    Q & A

  • The Thermal Insulations Testing Laboratory at Nirma University was developed under the NAFETIC (National Facility in Engineering and Technology with Industrial Collaboration) Scheme of AICTE

  • The testing instruments/setups in the Thermal Insulations Testing Laboratory include:

    Guarded Hot Plate System for thermal conductivity measurement * Vacuum Pumping System with LN2 Boil-off Calorimeter

    * Computerized Compression Testing Machine

    * Vibration Machine

    * Flame Height, Time of Burning and Loss of Mass Determination Apparatus. * Incombustibility Test Apparatus

    * Projection Microscope * Jolting Machine * Humidity Chambers * Apparatus for determination of shot content by elutriator * Sulphur determination apparatus * Apparatus for Determining Horizontal Burning Characteristic

  • Testing of Thermal Conductivity as per ASTM C177 and ISO 8302

    The Laboratory possesses a Guarded Hot Plate system to test thermal conductivity of insulations in the conductivity range 0.015 to 2.5 W / m K and temperature range -10C to +350C as per ASTM C 177 and ISO 8302.

    Accuracy : + 4 % and Reproducibility : + 2 %

    There are two furnaces for testing: one furnace is sub-ambient for the temperature range -10 C to 50 C, while the other furnace is for the higher temperature range from 50 C to 400 C.

    The equipment is calibrated periodically by using NIST Standard Reference Material (SRM) and the instrument output checked against the reference values. For the sub-ambient furnace, a Fibrous Glass Board SRM 1450b is used while for the high temperature furnace, a Fumed Silica Board SRM 1459 is utilized for checking the system performance.
