LONG TITLE
Modelling ANISOTROPY of Rock Masses with special focus on Phyllite/Schist
DESCRIPTION
The review of experimental data concentrates on phyllites and schist taking into account laboratory and in situ data-bases from recent base-tunnel projects in the execution phase. The various deformation modes are discussed depending on the stress level and the specific discontinuity characteristic. The focus is on anisotropic ground behavior with the specific macro structure due to stratification, schistosity or foliation. The main research activity is the application and comparison of individual constitutive laws described in the context of con-tinuum and discontinuum mechanics. The research goal is to identify existing gaps in modelling anisotropy of schistose or foliated rock masses and to outline strategies to overcome the main shortcomings in the devel-opment of future constitutive laws.

LONG TITLE Building Information Modelling in tunnelling
DESCRIPTION
Digitalisation is now an essential part in the construction in-dustry. One of the newest and most innovative technology in this field is Building Information Modelling (BIM). The princi-pal of BIM is to first build virtual and then real. BIM is widely known for its application in structural engineering, but at in-frastructure projects (e.g., tunnels) BIM gets used more fre-quently too. The current focus of the project is to investigate the inter-faces between 3D geological models, 3D geotechnical codes and the BIM model. This includes an automatized implemen-tation of the geometry of the CAD model to the geotechnical model, as well as to the 3D geological model, as such a transfer of coordinates currently is a time consuming and er-ror proven process. With the combination of the geotechnical and geological fea-tures (e.g. rock parameters) in one model it is also possible to create an iterative process to optimize the tunnel design, regarding different parameters, such as the deformations and the bending moment. Another very important aspect is the possibility of quickly adapting the design to the as-build state, as the expected geological features can differ greatly from the actual ones, and the excavation and support measures have to be adapted accordingly. Only if the design model is constantly updated it is possible to generate a “Digital Twin”, which can be used to maintain the structure during its entire lifecycle cost-effective.

SHORT TITLE / ACRONYM HSSRM
LONG TITLE Hard soil – soft rock modelling
DESCRIPTION
Hard soils and soft rocks (hereinafter referred to as 'HSSR') are part of engineering problems world-wide. They cannot be characterized by standard methods developed for soil or rock. The mechanical behaviour in the pre-peak range is strongly governed by the applied confining stress and localization oc-curs in the post-peak range in a brittle or ductile manner. The peculiar problem of modelling such HSSR materials is the main topic of this research subject. Both, existing data from literature review and in a further state own experimental data is used to elaborate the required modelling criteria.
The literature review on experimental data will focus on triax-ial tests on marl-, weak sandstone- and stiff siltstone-speci-mens covering a wide range of confining pressures to find valid input parameters for numerical modelling. Subse-quently, the deformation behaviour and the failure modes are discussed depending on the stress level and the specifics of the HSSR-material (e.g. strength/stiffness and consolidation history). The modelling is conducted to improve the under-standing of the mechanical behaviour of HSSR-material. The investigations will be limited to isotropic and homogeneous ground, without any macro structure (e.g. stratification, schis-tosity or jointing), including the pre-peak behaviour under compression. The research activity involves the application and comparison of two constitutive laws described in different elasto-plastic frameworks: a hardening soil model, which em-pirically fits better to the behaviour of stiff soil and a con-crete/shotcrete model, which should describe the behaviour of soft rock better.
The research goals are the identification of existing gaps in modelling of HSSR and the outline of strategies to overcome the main shortcomings in the development of future constitu-tive laws.

LONG TITLE Machine Learning in Geotechnics
DESCRIPTION
MLGT deals with the application of machine learning in gen-eral and deep learning in particular for geotechnical prob-lems. The current focus of the project is on applying artificial neural networks (ANN) in a supervised manner for classification and prediction of tunnel boring machine data. ANNs are seen as well suited for this problem since they have shown great ca-pabilities in solving non-linear problems and tackling com-plex tasks in other scientific disciplines. Since the goal of MLGT is to explore the applicability of dif-ferent techniques of machine learning on a variety of ge-otechnical fields, future endeavors include: testing unsuper-vised- and reinforcement learning, applications in kinematic block analyses, applications on rock mechanical laboratory data…

LONG TITLE Remote Characterization of Rock Masses
DESCRIPTION
Discontinuities dominantly influence the mechanical behav-iour of rock masses. Thus, it is important in rock mechanics to have a profound knowledge about the discontinuity net-work. Traditional mapping techniques are limited within time and scale. Furthermore, the results are rather subjec-tive and not reproducible.
The application of remote sensing in geotechnics helps to collect data about the discontinuity network and reduces the bias, introduced by manual mapping. Together with nu-merical models, reliable predictions about the stability of the discontinuous rock are possible. But there is still missing an automatic data collection and analysis process, as well as an automatic implementation of the collected data in a nu-merical rock simulation.
This research focusses on the automatic mapping of discon-tinuities aided by remote sensing techniques. This means:
Discontinuity extraction from coloured images (RGB) and digital surface models
Numerical simulation of discontinuous rock masses for stability analyses
