The year 2005 was a landmark one when the global population reached urbanization levels of 50% ; and by 2050, it is expected to be around two-thirds. This is unique feature of last few centuries as never before such large number of humans lived in such dense conditions and never before has there been such high demand for jobs, better housing, infrastructure and a widespread aspiration for a high quality of life. Afro-Asian countries like India are at the centre of rapid urbanization and large aspirational population, posing challenges to the management of cities and villages alike with

respect to their environment, services, economy and social cohesion. The knowledge and skills required for creating safe and productive cities and healthy societies draw from a large gamut of disciplines and are in a state of constant flux as has been displayed by the recent global emergency.

The field of Urban and Regional Planning relates to design, planning and management of human settlements at different scales, environments and social systems. Through assimilation of knowledge, skills and inputs

STUDIO BASED LEARNING

The Institute focuses on students learning through Studio Based Learning approach. Institute of Architecture & Planning through its curriculum design and clearly articulated learning outcomes ensures that students learn by constructing knowledge rather than by receiving it from others. This constructivist approach requires new techniques for assessing students’ learning that includes assessment as an integral part of teaching. Through formative and summative assessment, one is ensuring that the students follow the principles and learn the required knowledge and skill for the profession. Assessment rubrics and metrics for assurance of learning help to map the outcomes of the learning process. There are areas of focus in each semester with regular courses, electives courses and supplementary courses along with studio with an idea to develop observation, representation through Visual Communication Design, Hand skills, Computer based skills, multi-disciplinary theory, Professional practice, etc. A regular course has three components theory, Application and 'Learning by Doing' to establish the connectivity of theory and practice.

A disciplined, serene and pleasant environment envelops the campus. It blends beautifully with the green landscaping, aesthetic elegance of arches and the vibrant pursuit of knowledge by the young aspirants. The academic ambiance gives full scope for group activities, which are plenty, as also to individual pursuits for development on preferred tracks.

Campus Life

Practicing what you're learning about is amazing, and that's what my 2 years in this multidisciplinary course has helped me with. Exploring various places during site visits and Related Study Programme has given me exposure to life outside the sheltered college experience. At this institute what I have found to be the most helpful is the endless amount of knowledge that a student gets which helps them navigate their way through college. It has not only taught me how to excel in my work, but  also to love what I do and discover myself through it, and to be a better team player.

Institute of Architecture & Planning Nirma University is no less than a second home for all of us. The years that have been spent here have been full of learning opportunities which have been fun and frolic, and sometimes with academic grinding to go through. The international exposure of Related Study Programme at places like Shenzhen, Macau & Hong Kong is what adds to the fun learning part of the course & makes it even more interesting for one. The wide range of extracurricular that we experience here gives us a learning for life.
