Vajrayana Buddhist practice (Tibetan) ¡ Consciousness transferred to a “pure” realm at
moment of death ¡ Pure Realm: Dewachen
¢ Buddha Amitabha – Created realm for Buddhists to pursue enlightenment without having to go through the lower realms after death
In Western Culture – No attention to the process of dying, giving of aid for person’s consciousness to reach highest level after death, or training for this event during in life ¡ “When it is time to go to the bathroom, it is too late
to build a latrine.” Chagdud Rinpoche – Lama, Tibetan Buddhist
Practice during life: ¡ Involves a visualization of Buddha Amitabha and the realm of
Dewachen above crown chakra ¡ Involves a special breath expulsion exercise to open channel at
crown ¢ Open channel facilitates consciousness transfer to Dewachen at time of
death
Practice at time of death ¡ Same breathing expulsion and visualization ¡ Assisted by other Buddhists who know technique and link, through
the heart connection (heart to heart), to help move the consciousness to crown and Dewachen
Practice if Buddhist died and assistance not available immediately and consciousness has not left body ¡ Consciousness can reside in the body for 3 days or longer after
death (consciousness moves to the heart) ¡ Forcefully tap top of head to direct consciousness upward ¡ Visualize green energy connection of own heart with heart of
deceased to strengthen deceased’s vibration ¡ Prayer and breath expulsion technique for consciousness transfer
At time of dying, prayers directed to images and realm of dying person’s belief system and movement of consciousness in that direction ¡ E.g., Christian – Christ image and realm of
heaven (rather than Buddha Amitabha and Dewachen)
¡ Perhaps tap head and avoid touching feet
