At approximately 1:25 p.m., Ms. Dowdeswell will depart from the Royal Ontario Museum in a carriage procession to the front entrance of the Legislative Building at Queen’s Park. The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, directed by Mr. Noel Edison, will perform as guests assemble inside the Legislative Chamber.

A string quartet from the Royal Conservatory of Music will perform the Salute to the Lieutenant Governor, commonly known as the Vice-Regal Salute. It consists of the first six bars of the royal anthem, “God Save the Queen”, followed by a short version (the first four bars and the last four bars) of the national anthem, “O Canada”.

Oaths

Ms. Dowdeswell will take the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Office in both official languages. Administered by the Chief Justice of Ontario and witnessed by the Premier, the oaths are set out below:

• I, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors. So help me God.

• I shall well and truly execute the office of Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Ontario and duly and impartially administer justice therein. I shall well and truly execute the office and trust of Keeper of the Great Seal of Her Majesty’s Province of Ontario according to the best of my knowledge and ability.

Great Seal

The Great Seal of Ontario is used on official government documents issued in The Queen’s name. Each time a new Lieutenant Governor is installed, he or she is also sworn in as Keeper of the Great Seal. After receiving the Great Seal, Ms. Dowdeswell will entrust it to the Hon. Michael Orazietti, Minister of Government and Consumer Services.

Honours insignia

Ms. Dowdeswell will arrive wearing the insignia of an Officer of the Order of Canada (she was appointed in 2012) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (received in 2012).

Upon assuming office, Ms. Dowdeswell becomes the Chancellor of the Order of Ontario. As part of the installation ceremony, she will receive the order’s insignia. The Order of Ontario is the province’s highest official honour, and is awarded annually by the Lieutenant Governor to recognize the highest level of individual excellence and achievement.

Before proceeding outside following the indoor ceremony, Ms. Dowdeswell will receive the Vice-Regal Badge from a representative of the Governor General. Approved in 1999 by The Queen, the badge is a visible symbol of the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
